View Full Version : 3LCD & LCoS
creatine64 12-23-07, 01:32 PM Good afternoon,
I posted a question about few weeks about about 3LCD vs LCoS and most recommendations were "if you can go with the SXRD set", well the ministry of finance (AKA my wife) is more concerned about price, so I've been trying to convince her that we'd be better off getting an SXRD set, anyway to make a long story short, we were at SEARS the day before yesterday and I found that they had the 2 TV's that we've been looking, one was a 3LCD and the other was an LCoS both were 50" and playing the same picture, we both stepped about 12 ft back (our normal view position) and could not tell the difference between the 2 TV's and as a matter of fact the 3LCD looked alittle better, both of them had working remotes and I went thru all the preset picture settings but oddly enough the 3LCD seemed to be better.
is this one of those things where we should pickup what looks better to both of us since we are going to be using it or can someone explain what the biggest difference is between the technologies and would we be better off getting an SXRD set?
I'm somewhat of a laymen when it comes to this kind of thing so please keep that in mind.
Thanks

johnner1999 12-23-07, 10:00 PM I think going with a 50" set - and at 12+ feet back. It really shouldn't matter what technology you pick. Question was the LCD set a Panasonic with that new light source? If yes - I might pick that, if no other reason then saving in lamps.
What type of content will you be feeding this TV (SD, HD, HD DVD, Blu Ray, Cable or Sat). What factors are important to you and wife?
I just replaced a Sony A2000 with a Mits DLP set -- besides being much bigger. Quility is about the same for SD with it being better on the Sony; HD is sort of a tie.
SXRD is basically a LCD unit but with light bouncing off instead of through a panel. This typically is faster for motion then a old school LCD and should have no SDE (screen door effect)...
riggs58 12-23-07, 10:38 PM I think the biggest difference outside the display technologies themselves is that the SXRD A3000 sets have Motionflow 120hz, meaning that it should provide smother motion in addition to eliminating or reducing motion bluring. A good featrure if you watch alot of sports and movies with fast-action scenes. The A3000 also has one more HDMI input. A store is not the best environment to judge a set but the SXRD should provide a better picture. But as my brother is so often fond of saying, if you can't see or hear a difference, then there is no difference.

they were both SONY Bravia sets, we have Directv but we currently don't subscribe to the HD service from them, I do have an HD-DVD player, xbox360 and am looking at getting a PS3 (for BR) or a standalone player some time next yr, my wife is mostly concerned about price she doesn't care all that much about the bells and whistles, her view is "as long as it works"..LOL

I'm not a HUGE sports person but I do like alot of fast moving fast action movies, I've also heard that alot (what your brother says) and I guess my biggest concern is settling for something just to save a few bucks but in the long run regret not getting what I really want.
when you talk about the store not being a good environment to make a good judgment call, i can see that being very true, this was the 1st time that a store has ever had the 2 exact sets side by side that I've looked at and that was one of my concerns was knowing that the store is going be different with lighting and such and that's why I didn't want to get home with a TV and have it look different than it did on the floor.
I remember when we 1st got our HDTV 4yrs ago and my wife thought it was a waste of $$ she said she couldn't tell the difference between SD and HD so to show her the difference I hooked up a coax, rca, s-video, & component, she then had a change of heart and couldn't believe the difference I was kinda hoping for that same experience when we looked at the SXRD set and the 3LCD because I'd like to get the SXRD but as I stated earlier (and it kinda backfired) the 3LCD look better so she says "if can't tell difference......"
I know that if I can convince her that SXRD is a better way to go she won't have a problem with that but the in-store comparison didn't go the way I wanted it to...LOL
thanks for the responses
ps, boy do I feel whipped, having to ask my wife to get a good tv....LOL it's all good though she's a good women and if she's happy, I'm happy. :)
riggs58 12-24-07, 07:29 AM If picture quality alone isn't working for your persuasion, you could go the future-proof route with your wife and mention the Motionflow 120Hz and extra HDMI input. Having the Motionflow also provides you with the Motion enhancer. The High setting of which smooths out motion to the point of giving a film image a 3D-like effect. While the effect does look similiar to video, IMHO it really does give dimension - especially in nature shows where you can feel like you could jump into the screen. Some people like the effect and some don't but it's worth trying out just the same. Good luck to you.
creatine64 12-24-07, 08:58 AM Thanks, I really appreciate the info. I am going to work on that SXRD set.

The problem in a store is that both sets are set in vivid mode, are not adjusted properly, and are in a bright room. The biggest advantages, picture quality wise, of the A3000 are going to be color contrast and black levels, which are completely destroyed in that store environment.
Will you be happy with the 3LCD? Probably. But the SXRD does give you a better picture quality and the big question is how much that is worth to you.
creatine64 12-24-07, 09:36 PM ^^Thanks for the reply, I was just getting online to give an update and was able to order a Brand New SXRD 50" for 1299, no tax no shipping, ordered it about an hour ago and it should be here sometime next week, after the responses, I was able to make a good argument and was able to order it.
I am pretty excited because I really did want to get the SXRD set over the 3LCD

creatine64 01-03-08, 08:13 PM **posting an update like I said I would**
so the TV is here, arrived yesterday, and I am absolutely stunned at the PQ. I am really
happy I didn't settle for anything less. there is so many options and I'm still playing with the settings but out of the box (with vivid turned off) it's beautiful.
HD-DVD's look fantastic
Standard DVD upscaled look terrific
needless to say but I couldn't be happier.
thanks for the advice.
Way to go! I too am a fan of LCOS. I was going to chime in having had both types at my house. My wife too unfortunately was involved last year in our tv purchase. So I started out with a 3-lcd set, and was fine until we watched a dark movie in a dark room. I couldn't stand it! LCOS sets do considerably better with black levels and contrast. You made the right choice.
