View Full Version : Metal Gear Solid 4... PS3 exclusive or not?
impetigo 12-23-07, 11:58 PM Just got my Playstation magazine (the "official" PS3/PSP/PS2/PSN magazine) and there is a question from a reader who states that a Gamestop employee told him that the 360 would be getting MGS4, to which the editor stated that they still have no official word whether or not MGS4 will be PS3 exclusive or not, and that essentially they would be happy just to have it on the PS3. Sounds pretty weak. It's quite delayed so who knows when official word will come out. Oh well, in the mean time I still have to finish MGS1 and then play MGS2/3. I did play the original Metal Gear on the NES back in '87 though.
I'd say it has about as much chance going to the 360 as I have of Jessica Alba ringing my door bell in the next five years.
In all seriousness, Kojima actually complained that Blu-ray was hampering him (the capacity was too small) and I believe MGS4 will be the first dual layer PS3 game.

You should have stopped paying attention at the "Gamestop employee" part.
confidenceman 12-24-07, 12:51 AM It's one of the big questions of 2008. Who knows?
The Metal Gear series has never been an exclusively Sony IP. It started on NES and a remake of MGS1 appeared on the Gamecube. There's absolutely no reason why it would remain a PS3 exclusive. Konami is a multiplatform publisher.
It could remain a PS3 exclusive, but it could also just as easily be a timed exclusive and arrive later on 360. The majority of developers making PS3 exclusives have been or have become Sony-funded. Kojima's development studio is not one of them.
Remember, too, that the MGS series tends to do better in the US than it does in its home country of Japan. I think it's the process of making the game play more like a "Western" game that's causing the delay. If that's the case, then it might also make sense to port the game to a US-friendly console like the 360.
Signs point to this being a very tentative Sony exclusive. My guess is that this is a "wait and see" situation and that Konami, not Kojima, will make the final decision.
bkchurch 12-24-07, 01:23 AM Do we really need to discuss this again? Ok, yea it's possible. Hell MGS2:Substance got a half-assed port to the XBox so it's not unprecedented. We just won't know until Konami makes it official until then it seems all we have is a billion far from official sources saying "Yea, it's gonna get ported" or "Not a chance, it's PS3 exclusive".
As for the Gamestop employee, yea real reliable information there  I trust Gamestop employees to fill me in on what's happening in the gaming world about as much as I trust Hillary Clinton. The manager of one of my local Gamestop's once told me my 360 has the Falcon chipset because it's a Halo 360, funny thing is I checked prior to that and know for a fact that not only do I have the old Zephyr board but I don't even have the new heatsink. The manager of my other local Gamestop wouldn't believe me when I said there was a good chance UT3 would make it out before Christmas on the PS3 (we know how that turned out) and then proceeded to tell me he didn't think the PS3 community had any interest in UT3 mods.
Now what about Kojima saying "Blu-Ray was hampering him because it's not enough space"... BULL****! The game uses the in-game engine for everything so there's no CG cut-scenes so what exactly is making MGS4 so big that Blu-Ray can hardly contain it? Hell Crysis and Mass Effect (two large and graphically intense games) fit on one DL DVD, are you telling me MGS4 takes up 2 1/2 times more data than Crysis or Mass Effect? MGS4 could fit on a couple DL DVDs, Kojima is full of himself as usual. And if MGS4 can't fit on two DL DVDs then Konami is doing a piss poor job hyping this game because there's apparently some ungodly aspect to it that we don't know about.
Ok rant over. At the end of the day folks who really cares? The game is gonna come out on the PS3 and since it's being developed on the PS3 the PS3 version will be superior. What are you worried about? That people who don't own PS3s are going to be able to enjoy the game as well? Is that going to somehow diminish your enjoyment of the game knowing it's not exclusive? Or are you worried that it's gonna hurt the PS3 and boo-hoo that will in turn hurt you because of some fanatical brand loyalty? Ok wow that was a lot of questions. The point is it doesn't freakin matter either way. O for the record I wasn't accusing anyone in particular of being a fanboy, just a general statement.
mukaidaf 12-24-07, 02:47 AM i thought the "official playstation" magazine has been dead for about a year now?

nope, a new official playstation magazine is now out. i believe they have only had 1 issue so far, but the second one might be available now too.
as for MGS4, if it does get released on 360, its gonna be another 6-12 months after anyways so who cares. the people who want to play it will by then. it has been stated many times that this game is ps3 exclusive but no matter how many times it is, there will always be a stupid gamestop employee or some other ignorant person blatantly ignoring these statements. what can you do..............

In engine =/= real time, Heavenly Sword did most of its cutscenes in the game engine but a good deal of them were prerendered. By prerendering the cutscenes they can do things like load in the backround, or possibly increase quality by adding AA or other effects that can be rendered on a more powerful machine.
FrankJ.Cone 12-24-07, 01:28 PM as for MGS4, if it does get released on 360, its gonna be another 6-12 months after anyways so who cares
There were many people here who were very excited about Oblivion, Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six showing up later on the PS3and there are far fewer PS3 owners than 360 owners so it certainly seems there will be people that care.
MGS has been drastically changed with LOTs more shooting an combat. That type of title sells in the U.S. quote well. Given the small installed base here and the even smaller game sales to those units if the title makes it to 360 (I am not even suggesting it will) there should be millions of shooter fans interested.
bkchurch 12-24-07, 01:36 PM I can't help but wonder, considering the MGS fanbase is pretty much entirely in the Playstation camp how many 360 owners are really gonna care? Honestly MGS4 is gonna have to have some pretty amazing gameplay to compete with what the 360 has to offer right now since the story isn't exactly a selling point. Hell I've been playing since the first MGS and not even sure I know what the hell is going on in the story right now.
FrankJ.Cone 12-24-07, 01:48 PM The gameplay is so different that you cannot help but understand that Konami is looking for more than the traditional MGS gamer. The sales of MGS dropped by 1.5M between the last two versiosn while the PS2 had grown by tens of millions between them. With the time and resources Konami puts into these titles they cannot be happy with that.
When I see gameplay footage and listen/read about hands on the game is being tailored to take advantage of the N.A. market shooter fan. The fact that its on the PS3 makes me think Sony has to be offering a BOATLOAD of incentives to stay on the PS3 as the other conosle has enough shooter fans to move 5M units and nobody has even suggested MGS4 will hit that number on PS3.

THIS! Is what I clicked on this thread to say.
\Your adverage Gamespot employee is worthless.

Yeah, I felt the exact same way when I was starting the MGS series but after playing MGS3 and spending some time reading on what I didn't understand and missed(like the old Metal Gear games) then it has a good storyline.

Lol , I was just about to type this too.

You guys need to work on that reading comprehension. The point wasn't what the admitedly worthless Gamespot employee stated, but rather the response of the official PS magazine editor that he would just be happy to have it on the PS3 in response to the question of its exclusivity on the PS3. That kind of lukewarm response seems to indicate that they are not too confident about the chances, but then again, it's really all just worthless conjecture in the end.

When you puts things into this perspective, how is it any different than MS and their money hats on almost every game they release? and when you say another shooter fans console, there is no other Halo 3. What is the total sales for ME, Bioshock or COD4 for your beloved 360? H3 is MS trumph card. The only other game that will supersede it is Halo4 and I believe Bungie is sick of rehashing the same game.
instantpop 12-24-07, 10:58 PM To be honest, I don't care what console it comes out on. I just want to play it.
