View Full Version : Playstation 3 on Sharp LC-52D64U.
Does anyone play their Playstation 3 on a Sharp 64U? If so, could you please answer a few questions.
1.) Do you notice the banding during Blu-ray / gameplay? If so, how noticeable is it? This is the main thing that worries me.
2.) Since the 64U series has HDMI 1.3, does it support deep color? If it does support deep color, doesn't it help make the banding less obvious?
3.) Are there any similarly priced TVs which you would recommend over the Sharp LC-52D64U?
The third one isn't too important as I've already ordered my 52D64U...I can still cancel the order though. It will be here in 2 weeks  The wait is killing me.

To start I am not a writer or a spelling champ so forgive all of my mistakes...
Well I did own the 52D64U and at first i was like wow nice color and picture.... Then I hooked my PS3 to it and watched Ratatouille on it once again I was like wow this looks killer until the fast motion began. That is when I noticed the banding and some strange blurring/choppy frames. Now the blurring and choppy frames didnt happen much and wasnt that bad pretty much one time did that really stand out to me. I was watching the movie with a friend and they didnt even notice any of what i was talking about. They werent looking for it like I was because of all the banding issues I had been reading about. So i guess if your not looking for it you wont notice it.
That is the one bad thing about avsforum, you become aware of issues and look for them lol. If i was ignorrant to all of the problems I probably wouldnt catch alot of them lol.
I took mine back and got a sammy LN-T5265F for 500 bucks cheaper than what I paid for the sharp and so far I am alot more impressed with this tv overall. I think the overall picture is better and I dont have issues with banding that I can tell.
Now the sharp did have a nice picture and I really liked how slim it was also. If you can get a set without the Banding issues I would think that you will be happy with your purchase.
It seems that with every lcd if you look long enough and hard enough you can find an issue to complain about lol. I have had a RCA, Vizo, Olevia, Phillips, Sharp and now a Samsung... Honestly I wish I could take things from each tv to make the one I want. Each one had things I liked about them
Hope my ramblings helped even if just a little.
Have a good one.
_Avarice_ 12-24-07, 01:53 AM Regarding question #2, even though the PS3 and the set support HDMI 1.3, there are no movies that currently use the Deep Color colorspace, so it's of no benefit to you yet.
Cordcutter, to tell you the truth, your post made me a bit more worried. Hopefully I'll be able to stop myself from trying to find banding issues. I can't reveal how much I paid for this TV, but I could buy two for the price of other 52" LCDs with similar features and quality.
Buying another model now would really cost me. This always happens to me when I make a big purchase...I'm always excited, upset, nervous, happy, and anxious at the same time.

I know, I just want to know if the TV itself supports it for future movies that may. I was reading the HDMI 1.3 specs and Deep Color section was marked optional...Not sure if that means that the set can support HDMI 1.3 buy not have Deep Color.
WhoMe14 12-24-07, 03:37 AM I own a 42D64U. It has one band, and I honestly cant see it 99% of the time. I had the option to return it but I kept it. Its a great television honestly. Unless you can afford a Plasma I'd just take the Sharp espcially if its as cheap as your saying.
bwcafishing 12-24-07, 09:21 AM I have had no problems at all with my Sharp. All my blue rays look awesome and COD4 has been a blast! It is a truly great TV.
Vizion47 12-24-07, 10:55 AM I've got a 46D64U. Getting a PS3 tomorrow, hopefully there is no banding etc.
Will report as soon as I can.
Have had the 52D64U since october. I never saw one line of banding
nor any problem whatsoever. I play PS3, 360 even use as my monitor for my cpu. Blu Rays looks better on my TV then my buddies Elite plasma and even other XBR's. Anyway, MY receiver is HDMI 1.3 so is my TV and as of now there really isnt a difference in color at all at least I can notice.
Anyway, great TV, esepcially since I got it for half price the F&F deal. I actually bought 2 and my parents enjoy their HD cable programming which looks phenominal in even 108oi from their comcast cable box.
The 64U's are notorious for banding issues.
I'd look at the Samsung 5265F, or 5271F's. Or perhaps a Sony XBR4 52".
Well, all of my worries are pretty much relieved. I hooked up a PS3 to the 53D64U at work and it looked amazing. I couldn't see any issues at all. Hopefully, my TV looks that good.
Chase117 12-24-07, 09:25 PM Whatever you do dont look at the official thread in the display section! Everyone who posts in the official threads has a problem with their TV it doesn't matter what model. Every time I go there I find something new wrong with my TV! Now as for the sharp I have personally sat down and watched HD programming on a D64u many times and I have never seen any banding that everyone is so obsessed with, but you know I never look for stuff like that. Picture is beautiful and I mean it you are a lucky man I only wish I had the money for a set like that:)

That's great to hear because my 5265 is going to be delivered Wednesday and I'm pumped to play my PS3 and watch Blu-Ray.

It's a funny point you make about the "official display model threads". I know what you mean.

Heh, that is actually what did it. I was reading the thread to get some more info on the TV... Every other post seemed to be extremely negative. We need a thread for people who are 100% satisfied with the product they purchased.:D That way I can go there and feel confident about a purchase.

please dont come on here and start bashing a TV you dont have. I have 2 of them and have NO banding issues what soever.....

Most only run to the forums when somthing is wrong...cause they want help. If your happy your too busy enjoying your TV. Make no mistake though...Sharp does indeed have some kind of problem with the way they make these sets. Does it hurt them enough to make me not buy one??? Depends on the price lol..In my case the price was right and the problem is barely visible when conditions are ideal and invisible when Im just watching the TV normally.
Best peice of advice anyone can give potential buyers is.....buy it, try it, and if you dont like it take it back. Thats the main reason I reccommend people always buy thier big TVs at a local brick and motar location. Internet returns on somthing this size SUCKS!
Now I'm really excited.:D Just learned that the 52D64U supports 1:1 pixel mapping. This was actually one of the main things that made me want one of the more expensive sets.
sleepx2 01-05-08, 05:15 PM I have the 42D64u. The xbox 360 looks amazing hooked up to it. You will be pleased with your purchase.

Yea, I am really happy with it. Only think that sucks is that some PS3 games seem to rely on overscan and don't bother with the outside of the 1080P frame. There is a nasty line of random pixels in Ratchet and Clank while 1:1 pixel mapping is enabled.
See, the problem with posting a thread like this is that, the only people who will respond are people with problems with their tvs. So I wouldnt use this as a sample, I already stated about I have the set, never had one problem and I am using it to the MAX.

Yea, I pretty much expected that when I started the thread. However, there was bound to be at least one person who doesn't have issues with their TV.
If you got it for half of normal price then why even worry? Lol... I mean there are problems with EVERY TV you buy, you just don't notice them.

Because I could have also purchased other TVs for a similar price.
True... I think your getting a good TV though. I have a Sharp 32D62U... Has its dead pixels here and there... but I love it. I have no prob with dead pixels I am never close enough to see them even if i'm looking hard.
