I think the most important question is: How much do you want to spend?
Room size would also matter.

Projectors are not one-size-fits-all products. Some projectors are better suited for certain environments. Also, there is wide variation in terms of quality, with personal preference coming into play. Here are a few questions to get us started:

1) Will your "home theater" be a dedicated movie-watching environment with total light control?
2) How far away from the screen will you be sitting?
3) Can you use dark paint colors and mostly non-reflective surfaces to decorate the room?
4) What type of throw distance are you working with (distance between projector to screen)
5) Will you be watching lots of HD content from cable, sat., Blu-Ray, or HD-DVD?
6) Do you still watch any SD content?

I mean, these are just a few of the questions that come to mind. My advice -- you really have to have some of the room design completed (or at least conceptualized) before you start talking about projectors.

Buying the equipment is both the easiest and most fun part of this process. You choices depend mostly on your budget and your personal preferences.

For projectors, spend some time reading at Projector Central (http://www.projectorcentral.com).
