View Full Version : Looking for screen frame ideas for a sloped ceiling

I have a sloped ceiling that prevents me from mounting a fixed screen on the wall. I'd really prefer to build a frame that hangs from the sloped ceiling rather than building something the originates from the floor. Has anyone done something similar? Any pics?

Thanks in advance.

Should not be too difficult - just tie into structural members in the ceiling. A thought for you - sounds like you might be a prime candidate for an acoustically transparent screen as you will have dead space behind the screen. I went AT and won't go back.

How wide is the room? How tall is the wall before the slope? Is the screen going to be close to or on the wall or away from it?

Just an idea. You could get a couple of ceiling fan hanging brackets designed for sloped ceilings. Appropriate length pipes and go from there. You need to hit a ceiling joist for attaching each bracket

The room is roughly 15.5' wide. The wall is 5'9" before the slope begins.

Also, in the middle of the wall we have a live dormer w/ knee closet space on either side. We want to keep relatively easy access to the storage which is one of the reasons I want to hang from the ceiling.

usualsuspects - I would love an AT screen, but unless there is a DIY version it will have to wait.

SMX material if you can find some. I had success finding some on Ebay this past week.

The screen could be suspended by chains.

There is a DIY version. Phifer SheerWeave 4400 PO6 chalk. It can be a little difficult sometimes to get a hold of a raw piece large enough for a screen. I know that Don at HTIQ.com has a roll of this stuff.

Actually, I do have some of this stuff, and it is the Pfifer 4500 Chalk. PM me if interested. I really suggest a retractable, but you could build a fixed frame with aluminum pipe. Hang with a couple conduit hangers, then rotate the thing out of the way with a motorized cable. Should only take a couple of evenings to build. ;)

The screen could be suspended by chains.

I hung mine with black rope and pulleys so it's easily adjustable. It just hangs in space and if you get the picture lined up perfectly it's as if the image hangs in space. I also went the SMX route and put the speakers on a shelf behind the screen. The shelf and speakers are all black. So it's nothing but image and sound when you are watching a movie.
