View Full Version : Pans Labyrinth Region Coded? Or BD Mistake Carried Over
I picked up the HD-DVD last night at BB's B2G1F and the back has a Region A designation.
Is this just a mistake carried over from the BD version artwork/jacket as HD doesnt have any region coding I thought?
GamerGuyX 12-24-07, 03:38 PM You cannot code a region into a movie who's format has no region coding. So yes, it is a typo.
tahustvedt 12-24-07, 03:56 PM I think it's a mistake that has happened with the cover of a few other titles as well.
obispo21 12-24-07, 04:10 PM DVD Empire has good images of the back covers of each title, so you can compare the HD DVD & Blu-ray. It does look like a carry over from BD.
It looks like the BD is missing the Web Enhanced features, but kept the visual commentary. (I'm not sure if it was done via dual encodes or Profile 1.1 functionality.)
Also, did anyone else's Pan's have a slightly new style of HD DVD case? Mine came in an "Elite" case like all other WB titles, but the HD DVD logo is now "reverse" engraved / stamped with no silver color at all. It looks pretty neat, but is also very hard to see.

Noticed that on a few titles at Best Buy yesterday, it's rather odd.

The logo is on the inside of the case so you are looking at it through the red case instead of being on the outside like it is on other cases.
NoThru22 12-24-07, 05:39 PM Maybe it's just the sales region code?

I thought there WAS region coding but no one has opted to use it yet. I thought we were just lucky so far. This is great news (to me, anyway) if true!

no there is the image constraint token which would convert analog output to near-SD but that has not been used. HD-DVD has no region coding in the spec...a big reason disney didn't join in.

That's right. I knew there was something bad that no one had used yet.

Highlight Germany uses ICT on their HD DVDs thus far. Fantastic Four, Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer will display at 480p max over component video cables.
Is this movie in spanish only or did best buy sell me a spanish instead of a english version.

It's in Spanish. Thats the great thing about the high-def formats, the main audio is always the original language track. No god-awful dubbing.
back to the moive then. I thought the picture in the first 2 min. looked pretty good. Thanks guys
Isn't this a combo disc? If so then the region coding would apply to the dvd side.

def. not a combo
Come now, HD DVD and Blu-Ray still have dubs. They just aren't usually lossless. :)
Pan's Labyrinth just never got an English dub, which is a little surprising in the scheme of things. It was dubbed into French, Italian and Russian at the very least.
