I double dryalled w/green glue sandwhiched - my walls and ceiling. Howver like an idiot I left about 3" of space along the top between the wall and the ceiling. I don't remember what I was thinking of doing with that space. Anyway, what can I do to clog it up (that won't cost me too much too do).
Can I just stuff a ton of fiberglass insulation in that gap?, is there something else that'll work? I'm getting a lot of rumble from the subwoofer escaping to the levels above.

I honestly don't think the insualtion will do that much myself...

How about a 5 inch piece of drywall, then a 3 1/2 inch, then a 2 inch. It will look like a Deco molding. After thinking about this maybe some MDF strips would hold a better edge.

I like bigmouth's idea.

There's a commercial product that is drywall flat strips for creating reveals. And a matching drywall crown too. Or you could use J moulding on the cut drywall edge and do the sanding...

I like the art deco molding idea.

Or you could just use the same size pieces for a large square contempo molding look. With that I would imagine you could caulk where it meets the current wall and add a few more layers of GG inbetween the thin drywall molding.

thanks, I like this idea. I think I'd prefer the MDF board instead too, b/c the wife is REALLY getting pissed off from the site of drywalls being taken into the house (doesn't like the dust).

Would I need to put green glue between each board (i.e. 2 layers between the 3 boards) or having 3 layers of wood is enough?

Also is quiet glue ok - b/c green glue only is sold by the case- and I don't need so much?

While I don't know if their is a difference between the two, people do seem to LOVE the GG. Maybe ask around and someone can sell you a tube or two from their case. Just go with what you know works so you don't have to fix something again.

PS...I just remembered I have seen a place sell a two-pack of the GG. I will PM the link when I find wherever I may have hidden it! You should prob verify if they are a company in good standinds, legit..etc..

thanks, I like this idea.

You might want to experiment with different sizes to get a profile you like.

You could also put a layer of MDF and some off the shelf cornice molding. Lot's of options.

I found a molding locally that was 3 inches and had three equal steps. I used it over a piece of 3 1/2 inch wide 1/2 inch thick MDF to create a more decorative base for my popcorn machine: Just turn it upside down to imagine at the ceiling.

If I put a layer of MDF and store bought molding on top of it. How would I sound proof/isolate? 2layers of MDF with GG in between?

I redid my HVAC after the fact. I wasn't happy with the size of the soffit in my small room so I ripped the soffit down and redid the HVAC trunk from 8x8" to 5x12" and ended up with a 3" gap at the top of the wall. I added a 3" strip of drywall to this open space, and applied GG and then added a strip of drywall (with metal J channel at the bottom) and repeated with a second layer. While this patchwork won't be seen, as it will eventually be behind acoustical treatments and fabric wall and some of it in the front AT space, it shows the potential of Big Mouth's suggestion.

The second picture is of our kitchen. The crown and reveal is a commercial drywall product. The reveal is a flat piece of drywall and comes in an 8 or 9" wide x 8' long "board". The reveal "boards" are often used in multiple layers, but the kitchen has but one, on the ceiling. This product could be installed and there is little sanding to be done, just the joint areas.

As for GG, occassionally a partial case becomes available in the AVS marketplace section.

I would take drywall dust over MDF dust every day of the week.

Check with Bpape - I think he sells it in less than a case increments. Or find a build tread that did GG recently. Some one always has an extra tube or two.
