Purchased this 3 disk set for my wife and we watched the first 40 minutes of disk one today. Video quality is quite uneven, but that is quite understandable given the diverse quality of the source material, as this is a compendium of all of the MGM Musicals. Outside of the early B&W footage, most of the rest is absolutely amazing in terms of the clarity and color. The audio is in TrueHD and where there is stereo in the sound track, the quality is terrific. I would heartily recommend this package to anyone that enjoys those classic MGM musicals and is a bit curious as to what some of the classic footage REALLY can look like. Where are those classic musical releases on HD-DVD or BD, by the way???
Another great catalog title for me :) (ordered)
Now, interest for classic titles still seems to be low. Therefore the lack of new releases.

Bought it on the 24th. On tap to view all three sometime this week since I'm on vacation and I have all time in the world to watch. :):):)

I agree, I am glad to own this.
Sources of clips couldn't be redone I imagine, It is the best it will ever look without starting brand new from scratch. If you are NOT expecting grain and a little dirt in some older clips, you will be disappointed when watching. I loved it and don't think The Wizard of Oz could look any better which wasn't spectacular for this 1939 movie.

I have to disagree. Many of the color clips appeared to suffer from inconsistent aging of the Technicolor layers, resulting in greater shrinkage of one layer than another. Exceptions were the "Make 'Em Laugh" and "Singin' In the Rain" numbers from "Singin' In the Rain." Those numbers were shown in the OAR of 1.33 to 1, unlike the "Broadway Melody" and opening credit numbers, which were also included. I suspect that on the first two, Warner substituted clips from its 2002 DVD release.
I'm not trying to discourage anyone from buying this set. I would love to see support for musicals. (I should add that I'm viewing the disc on a 102" diagonal screen through a Marantz front projector, and this set-up may be more revealing than some other systems.) Nonetheless, given the quality of the source materials, I'm surprised Warner bothered with this release. That's not a criticism. They could hardly be expected to remaster all of the original movies featured. I would have thought, though, that HD releases of Singin' In the Rain and Wizard of Oz would have shown off the format more impressively than this set and sold more, as well.
Edit to add: Having dissed this release, I now see that it has received some rave reviews, including from preservationist Robert Harris (though he did note registration issues). If you like musicals, buy the set and decide for yourself.

I agree with compson - this release is all over the place in terms of PQ but the actual content is excellent fun. I really hope we see standalone releases of the like Singin' In The Rain, The Wizard Of Oz, West Side Story, etc.

Just watched the first one last night. Great content and mostly looked good. These were the stars I grew up with.
I'm looking forward to the next two!
