View Full Version : PS3 Audio (HDMI/Optical) ??'s
nwcross 12-25-07, 04:34 PM Hello everyone, new to the forums... I searched around on this topic and could not find anything to help me out.
Let me start by explaining my setup as it isn't your typical one. Sharp 1080p 52' LCD. Samsung HTIB with HDMI in and HDMI out/optical, etc. Currently I have my Digital TV receiver connected to my HDTV via HDMI along with my PS3. I also have an audio optical cable from my tv to HTIB.
When I am watching tv via my HDTV cable box, I receive audio via the HTIB. Now when I change the input from my TV to PS3 I onyl recieve audio out of my tv speakers and not the HITB surround.
So question is why am I getting audio from my home theatre in box when it is talking to my cable receiver and not my ps3?
tokerblue 12-25-07, 05:25 PM Did you try hooking up the optical cable directly from the PS3 to the receiver? Not all TV's will pass audio from the optical output and if they do, it is usually only stereo. The optical output on the TV is most likely only for the internal ATSC tuner.
You also may have to go into the PS3's menu and set your audio options.
teelapia 12-25-07, 08:27 PM You have to hook up an optical cable from the TV to your home theatre. Therefore you get the whole sound effect from TV to home theatre, via any connection. HTH.

highly unlikely that this will work... sorry to disappoint you that your first post is erroneous... :p
tokerblue has the "correct" answer...
teelapia 12-25-07, 09:14 PM No because it works with my set up. I have optical cable from TV to home theatre. I have the Wii, and XBOX connected directly to my TV. When I play the games, I turn on the home theatre, choosing the input type (aux 1, aux 2 or HDMI 1 or 2) however way you work it. But it will work, as Optical cable is like an output/input from TV to home theatre. Try it. It should work.
nwcross 12-25-07, 09:20 PM Having an optical cable from the TV to the home theatre is my current setup. Input 1 is HDMI Cable box. Everything works great there. Input 2 is HDMI PS3, no audio. I have also played with every option on the PS3, TV, and receiver. Will everything work if I connect my PS3 directly to my receiver through its "HDMI IN" port?
I will give it a try, its just interesting how the Cable set top box has audio returning to the receiver through the tv and not the ps3. They are in no way connected; only the optical on the tv and stereo are connected.
TEELAPIA- Just so you know it is not a full blown-bad ass receiver. It is a home theatre in a box. One HDMI in, and one HDMI out, hd components out and the places for the speaker wire. Also a 5 disc changer, sorry if that confused anyone.

tell us how you have your wii and xbox connected, and then tell us how this is relevant to an hdmi audio connection coming into the tv?

yes, connect your ps3 to your avr via hdmi, and then the avr to the tv via hdmi, and you will get what you are looking for...
agencylife 12-27-07, 12:50 AM Anyone know if the PS3 has HD Audio out via HDMI?

- Yes, the PS3 will output the higher resolution audio as PCM. Your receiver has to accept multichanel PCM for you to be able to hear it though.
