View Full Version : Need some PS3/PS2 Games
Satummoo 12-25-07, 06:37 PM I know there are lots of list of games that are the "best ps2 games" and "must haves" but I am looking for some games that aren't overly violent or have demonic themes. I know it's not a big deal to some but I don't want to play those kinds of games (neither do I want to play sesame street games :p ). Anyways I kind of came up with a list and need some input on how worthwhile of games they are or if they would be good for my playstyle:
PS2 Games:
Shadow of the Colossus
FFX
Okami
Gran Turismo 4 (or wait for GT5?)
Burnout 3: Takedown (or get the new PS3 Version? Heard it wasn't that good)
PS3 Games:
Motorstorm
Warhawk - I really like the flying aspect but not sure about the FPS aspect
Just for backround, I got a New PS3 20gb on ebay for 380$ so the only games I have now are FFXII and DDR Super Nova when I shortly had a slim which I sold to get the PS3.
Well, if you're reading this website you do know that Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty 4 (which is one of the best games of '07) are both on sale at Best Buy this week for $37.99. Even if you're not into FPS, COD4 is so good it should not be overlooked, especially at that price.
joeblow 12-25-07, 08:16 PM Oblivion is in the fantasy violent category, but is not overly so... a great PS3 RPG to check out. Ridge Racer 7 is always on my list of recommendations for the unit, and Ratchet and Clank is one of the best games for the platform as well. Folklore might fit your needs as others I've read say it is great. It isn't violent or demonic so check it out.
For the PS3, this year I hear good things about Odin Sphere and Rogue Galaxy. Of course there are a ton of other games to look at as well for it, so I suggest for the PS2 you visit Game Rankings (http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp) and go down the list of the highest scored titles for the system to pick out the ones that best fit your criteria. There are 49 games that have a 90%+ average by the press (and approaching 300 over 80%), so there is plenty to choose from.

Anyways I kind of came up with a list and need some input on how worthwhile of games they are or if they would be good for my playstyle:It all depends on how you define "overly violent" and "demonic themes." Do you simply mean "bloody games" or "games that have demons in them"?
Shadow of the Colossus - You fight large god-like creatures. They squirt blood when you attack them. You're a demon of sorts, and the goal of the game is to raise a woman from the dead.
FFX - Does magic count as demonic? If you've played other FF games, you know all about summoning, which is precisely what "demonism" is. The game riffs on Christian allegory (mostly Spencer's "Faery Queene"), but in a very non-Christian way.
Okami - You play as a god fighting demons. Both violent and demonic.
Gran Turismo 4 (or wait for GT5?) - No demons or violence here. You can't even crash your cars.
Burnout 3: Takedown (or get the new PS3 Version? Heard it wasn't that good) - Violence, but no demons, other than speed demons. New one (Burnout Paradise) looks very, very good and is getting very positive preview impressions.
Motorstorm - Violent, but not bloody or demonic.
Warhawk - Again, violent (you're playing war), but not very bloody or demonic.
Some comments on others' suggestions:
CoD4 - Very, very violent. But no demons in sight.
Assassin's Creed - Very violent (you're an assassin) and your enemies are part of a cult (though they don't seem to be of the demonic kind).
Oblivion - Again, violent (as 95% of games are) and demonic. Most of your non-human enemies are demons and monsters of one kind or another.

Thankyou so much for this list. Before I read it, I bought 2 PS2 games. GT4 and Shadow of the Colossus. I only opened GT4 but now after reading what you put about SOTC, i'm not sure if i'll return it...I'll do a bit more research but your descriptions on the games really help. I'll post what I find :)
Saleen4971 12-28-07, 11:54 PM FFX was good, but SO short
GT4 is good, but IMO jstu wait for GT5 (unless you dotn ahve ANY racing games)
oblivion was good, im into RPG's, but this one got kind of boring. then again, i dont think i got that far into the game. i never made my won anything, i sjtu wnet aroudn killing peopel mostly. whcih is always fun
confidenceman 12-29-07, 12:34 AM Thankyou so much for this list. Before I read it, I bought 2 PS2 games. GT4 and Shadow of the Colossus. I'll post what I find :)I absolutely love SotC, so it really does pain me to think I may keep you from it. Maybe you could be a bit more specific in what you mean by "demonic themes"? I'll put a further plot description (including some bits about the ending) behind spoiler bars so as not to spoil it for others:You play as a young man who brings a dead young woman to a deserted land. In order to bring her back to life, a god-like voice tells you that you must kill ten or so gods (called "colossi" in the game). By the game's end, you've absorbed too much of the gods' dark powers and become a shadow-like demon. The dead young woman returns to life and gives birth to a boy born with horns. It hurts me to think I might be keeping someone from such a beautifully made game, but it does have many "demonic" elements, many of which are made to seem "good." Thought I should give you fair warning.
Dashboard 12-30-07, 12:27 PM Get Ratchet And Clank on the PS3 (and the others on the PS2) it's not violent... more like a Pixar movie :p
And for the PS2 games, you got them all right : SoTC, Okami, FFX, GT4.. EXCELLENT CHOICES!
From PS2 Library:
KATAMARI DAMACY!!! (and its sequel We Love Katamari) - incredibly fun!!
Burnout 2 - Try this one and see if you are gonna like the new Burnout
Lego Star Wars
SSX 3 - great snowboarding game
Beyond Good & Evil - great Adventure/RPG game that is not any more violent than Saturday morning cartoons.
Kya: Dark Lineage - very fun action/RPG that is like a cartoon. Cool game.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy - Egyptian mummy's and whatnot is about demonic as it gets. The game is hilarious playing as the Mummy. Again, its like a cartoon with the humor.
PS3 Games:
Burnout is gonna be a great racing game.
Rock Band - pricey but worth EVERY dollar. I've had 8-10 people over the last couple Fridays all for Rock Band. Crazy Fun for Everyone!!!
Lego Star Wars
Ratchet & Clank
You can also download some games from PSN like:
Super Puzzle Fighter (testris like game)
Blast Factor (sorta like the classic game Asteroids)
Calling All Cars (cartoony chase game driving a little car)
Saleen4971 12-30-07, 03:27 PM FYI - i jstu picked up ratchet & clank up yoru aresnal for $14.99 (minus $1.50 with my card) form gamestop today. ADN they have buy 2 get 1 free on used games
WJonathan 12-31-07, 01:40 AM I agree with Ratchet & Clank, pretty much any in the series were great pick-up-and-play games. Also the Jak & Daxter games, Ico, and the Sly Cooper series were a lot of fun.
jmystikcfl 12-31-07, 11:59 AM I second the Sly Cooper games. They're tons of fun, and can get pretty challenging. GT and Burnout are great fun too. And Super Puzzle Fighter I would get right off the bat. As soon as you've got it online, go to PSN and grab that one. My old roommate and I would waste entire weekends playing that game. It's almost like Dr. Mario if you remember back that far :)
COD4 is a great game, but it is pretty violent. It's a first person shooter, you're in the middle of a war shooting people and blowing stuff up. I think it's a great game, and I'm glad I picked it up, but if you don't want violence on your console, steer clear. And DEFINITELY steer clear of anything with "God of war" in the title. One of my favorite games of all times, but more violent than a Jerry Springer marathon.
