I have 250 hours on my Ruby and it has started to emit a high-pitched noise, sort of like crickets. :mad:It is not terribly loud but is clearly noticable as I sit under the unit in my HT. It is also intermittant, though more usually there than not.
I believe other owners have encountered this problem (I think that it was discussed on the British avforums site) but have not seen any solutions. Has anyone else encountered this problem and, if so, what is the fix? (WD-40?)

I sent my projector back for this reason early this month. They replaced the lamp and did the hard start mod kit. All of this was done under warranty.

What is the "hard start mod kit"?

Fix is a new lamp.....:mad: If you are lucky it is covered under warranty.

What is the "hard start mod kit"?
As per Sony Service, it is an add-on to remedy start up issues some of those earlier build Rubys may encounter. If your Ruby does not start you will need this kit, otherwise you do not.
In any case installing this kit is independent of the 'cricket issue' you are facing.

Just got off the phone with Sony. They will not allow the local service centers to repair the unit, so they want me to send it to Laredo. This of course means taking it down from the ceiling, finding a box and shipping it off just to reverse the process whenever they decide to send it back.
Given that this is a known problem with the units, this procedure is outrageous. The problem is known; the fix is known; and, any reasonably handy person could perform the fix.
This was my fifth Sony TV; it will be the last.
