What are the outputs of most of the PS3 games. Will they look better on a HDTV that supports 1080i/1080p? Do most games have it on the case somewhere? I'm assuming if you hook it up via HDMI your getting some kind of HD or upscaling of some sort.

most PS3 games are rendered at 1280x720. SOME of the smaller cheaper games are 1929x1080.

Some of the 720p games support output at 480p and some 1080p (even then they will display at 720 unless you jump through some hoops). They really won't look better at 1080p because they are rendered at 720p and scaled. 720p looks fine, though. The one bad thing is many early HDTVs don't support 720p input and the games won't be HD.

the 360 has more games with 1080p output but most of those are also rendered at 720p. The difference is the 360 has more developer access to the scaler.

^^? Umm I think that is incorrect ... There are a few 1080p games on the system, but the 360 is all 720 upscaled to 1080p using an internal scaller.

there are 2 360 games that are rendered in 1080p (Virtua Tennis and NBA Homecourt). the rest are "720p" (a lot of 360 games aren't even 720p) and upscaled to whatever resolution you want. PS3 has more games rendered in 1080p, but most, like the 360, are 720p, and most are upscaled to 1080p (usually if you de-select 720p). PS3 has at least 8-9 games that are rendered at true 1080p, but most of them are PSN games. some non-PSN games that are 1080p are MUA, VT3, Full auto 2, Ridge Racer (i think), NBA 07 and NBA 08. you can almost consider the GT games to be 1080p, but they aren't full 1080p (GT:HD is 1440x1080 and GT5P is 1280x1080).

Although that is not all accurate, he is pretty much dead on. Xbox 360 upscales every game ( Xbox + Xbox 360) to 1080P if you set that as your output. That is, assuming the Xbox game runs on the 360.

Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have around 15 games that are rendered below 720P. I don't recall the exact numbers, but the 360's count is 2 more than the PS3's count.

Either way, your TV will scale the game to 1080P if it isn't already receiving a 1080P signal. I've seen a few TVs that scale better than the PS3. Granted, these were very high end sets running games that only stretch in 1 direction. Just mess around with the settings and see what looks best on your TV.

Thanks for the info. Is there a way to tell what each games resolution is like on the box? Is there a website that has a list?

I'll be hooking the PS3 up to my 47" Vizio which displays all the HD formats so hopefully I'm good there.

Also I need to buy a HDMI cable for HD? The PS3 doesn't come with one?

I'm looking at the cheaper PS3, the 40gb, because I will not be playing any PS2 games. And really all the memory slots, what the advantage to all these if your not interested in putting videos and pictures on your TV? Also with the 40gb I lose 2 USB ports which I think I can live with. So is the 40gb for me?

So is the 40gb for me?There's no way to tell resolution on the box. All that the publisher includes is a list of supported resolutions, not actual rendered resolutions. You'll have to do some internet research to track down individual games' native resolutions. Generally speaking, though, it's not something you need to worry about unless you need 1080i support (a display that won't accept a 720p signal).

You don't need an HDMI cable, but I (and everyone else, I'm sure) strongly recommend one. You can still get HD over component, but no DVD upscaling. And, no, the PS3 does not include an HDMI cable, but monoprice has them for dirt cheap (and they're every bit as "high quality" as a $60 super-duper, time-traveling, gold-and-platinum-plated, miracle-working cable).

If you don't need PS2 support and don't want SACD capability and don't need all the memory card stuff, then go for the 40gig.

So the PS3 Still doesnt upscale 720p games to 1080?Only if the individual developer enables it.

Just to be complete, there is also an Xbox 360 Live Arcade game that is native 1080p -- Every Extend Extra Extreme.

So what HDMI cable from monoprice? What are the category 2 ones and non 1.3a ones?I believe that "category 2" = higher speed rating.

As far as the "1.3a" designation, I've yet to be convinced that there's any measurable difference in HDMI cables.

That said, the prices are so low on monoprice and the difference in price between cables is so minimal, that I'd go ahead and get the best quality cable you want.

since the "1.3" designation on a cable is a way of stating it will handle the higher data rate, you could assume monoprice will stand behind that.

with a 1.2 or lower HDMI cable, they don't need to. Given the price is the same it's a no brainer. Honestly I doubt the cables themselves are any different.

Yeah, my guess is they got tired of people asking if they do 1.3. So, just copy the products onto a new page called 1.3 compliant.
