I'm trying to figure out if my problem is my disc or my players. All of my players (A1,A2,XA2) hang up on the episode The Menagerie part II. All players have the latest firmware. My disc now has some scratches from all the cleaning I've done trying to get it to work. All other episodes work fine except Menagerie part II. I ordered the 1st season from Amazon on 11/26 and already sent in for the free remote so I don't know if I can return it for a new set? Who/how do I contact to replace just dsic 4 if thats what I have to do. What really sucks is this one of my favorite episodes, green women give me a stiffy!!

What's with these discs? I have the latest firmware on my HD-A30 yet they freeze and sputter. I've noticed it tends to be further in the disc. Do the combo's have a problem with the second layer??

Is there anything we can do to make these playable? I've tried wiping them but no difference. I can't keep buying and returning these things.

I've watched through disc 4 so far on my HD-A1, with FW 2.4. No issues, on either sides.

I remember when I was thinking of upgrading to a newer HD DVD model. Glad I stuck with this one, it never seems to have the issues most people run in to with other, newer models.

I've had only a few disc that I've had problems with and a quick clean with the the shirt tail and the problem is usually cured. My A1 gets the farthest before things start stuttering and then locking up. I noticed that the counter keeps counting but the picture is froze. Had problems with the A1 I bought at Walmart for $99 but after updating no problems so far except for Star Trek. I updated the XA2 to the latest firmware before trying and first problem has been Star Trek. I guess I will try to return to Amazon. Just started buying disc from Amazon and this is the reason I usually try to buy local for my software and hardware needs.

I have the same problem. I looked at the discs and they appear to have problems with their pressing (which people have described with some other combos). This is the first time I have ever had a problem with a combo disc.

I recently rented The Original Series from Netflix. I am up to disc 6. Never had any problems with any of the episodes. I don't have problems with any combo discs either. Personally I don't like combos at all.

If this is truly a defect of the pressing, I supose that no amount of cleaning will make it play, right?

Has anyone been able to get one of these combos discs to play by cleaning or reinitializing their player?

Interestingly, I get the error on the same disc, with the same episode, near the end.

I have never had an issue with any disc, ever. (Toshiba HD-A2) This is the first and only one I've had problems with. Cleaning the doesn't help.

Once in a while it can play right through it, and once in a while it will hang. When it does hang, I can sometimes FF through it, but some times I just get that dreaded 4xxxxxx error.

I saw this number for Paramount on another forum where the poster was complaining of the same type of disc issues with the Star Trek HD set: 1-323-956-3010. Apparently, that poster called and Paramount is sending them a single replacement disc. I have at least one bad one that I will probably call about.

I've been having the same issue with disc 1,4 and last night disc 5 (Balance of Power towards the end).

Like mentioned previous... sometimes I can FF thru it... mostly though I can just restart and it will play thru.

But on "Balance of Power", it starts to sputter right when Spock pushes the red button on the console to fire the phasers. Tried 3 times to get it to play thru but to no avail...
This was on my A3, I'll try the A2 tonight and see if it hangs in the same spot.

Glad I tripped onto this thread, I was starting to think I was alone...

I had an intermittent problem with Disc 4 - it wouldn't load and it gave me a weird error (I don't remember what it was). I basically turned over the disc and played the SD side, then stopped it after a minute, and put the HD-DVD side in and the disc played fine ever since. So I am not sure what caused it, since I have the most updated firmware on both my A2 and A3 players.

From the reports of the discs that people seem to be having problems with, it appears they are those where at least one episode on the disc has some HD-I or Starfleet Academy special features. Disc 4 has the two Managerie episodes, Disc 1 has Where No Man Has Gone Before. Disc 5 has Balance of Terror. I also remember someone saying on another forum his discs stuck on The Galileo Seven episode, which is also another episode/disc with Starfleet Academy HD-I special features.

I wonder if the authoring of these discs and the special features could be problematic with some players and firmware?? In addition to the fact that these are combo discs??

Bingo... maybe I'm bleary eyed from all the movies I've been watching. But now that you mentioned it, in fact every problem I've had with hanging up in spots have been the episodes with Star Fleet content...

I had issues with disc 1 on one set, got another, then had no more issues with disc 1. The issue I had would always occur in the same spot (about 16 minutes into "Where No Man Has Gone Before"), although it did play fine once or twice when I was testing it.

My A1 would always make it toward the end and at first my XA2 wouldn't get as far but after a good cleaning with warm water it would make it to about the same spot. My A2 never got very far before it would start to stutter and then freeze. It would actually start having audio problems right before the video problem. I decided to return my copy to Amazon and should have my new copy tomorrow or Friday at the latest. I was wondering if anybody thought about putting a label on the SD side of a combo disc and see if that cures the freezing problem. I might try that down the road if I have a disc that's not returnable, like most of mine because I have a large collection that I haven't seen yet because I just haven't had the time to watch them.

My A3 player handled the Where No Man Ha Gone Before episode, with frequent cuts to the Star Fleet archives extras for 'Genesis' segments with no problems. But I had lots of hangup problems on Disk 2, some of which got better after cleaning the disk. But on Disk 2 if I even _try_ to start Naked Time, the machine will hang completely. Nothing works after that, and I have to power off to regain any control. Other areas will hang the video and audio, but eventually something returns. Starting Naked Time the counter goes to 00:00 and stays there with no video or audio. Sometimes pushing chapter jump will cause the counter to jump to new numbers, but no other visible change. Other times, even that has no effect. I have not yet gotten to any further disks to see what other problems there are. Also, still waiting on my Phaser remote!

EDIT: Amazon coming through once again, offering replacement of the whole set, already in the mail!

Then later, a mail truck stopped and dropped a pkg at the door. it was about the right size I thought...

I have no issues when playing all discs in my A35, but one episode in disc 1 (HD DVD side) stutters on my HD DVD based notebook. But no problems with my A35? I've never had an issue with Combo discs before.

I have major problems with that episode and a few of the earlier ones. 'Miri' locks up right when it starts.

I bought my discs used on ebay even though the seller said he only opened them. They are not scratched as far as I can tell. Yes, maybe a few small, almost invisible imperfections on them. What I do is just flip the disc and watch the DVD. Its 50/50 if the HD plays all the way through on my batch.

Menagerie Part 2 has been the worst so far though.

I've been watching Star Trek on my Xbox 360 add-on. I'm up to disc 6 and haven't had any problems. Miri, Menagerie Part 1 and 2, and all the other episodes so far played flawlessly.

When did you send in for the remote? I sent in for mine on 1/28. Just curious how long it's been for others.

I think it was the 1st or 2nd week of December but dont remember for sure. I almost forgot about it until I saw my old post about disc 4.

Well I pulled the trigger on this DVD set when I saw the $97 price tag last week, got it yesterday. Disc 1 won't play on my XA2 at all, it displays "loading" for about 45 seconds, then displays a message saying it's not a DVD format disc. Tried cleaning it with warm water and dish soap, still no go. Disc 2 seems to work but I didn't have time to watch the whole disc or try any others. But what I did see looked really nice.

Has anyone tried getting a replacement disc by calling the number in post #9?

Oh, Oh! I hope that these Star Trek discs are not all problematic. I also ordered this set of discs along with a few other HD DVDs from Amazon.com about 2 weeks ago and they still have not shipped my order saying estimated ship date of March 15, 2008!!!! WTF? Why taking so long. Maybe there is a known bug (or just too many complaints for this set of HD DVD discs) and they are fixing it?

I hope I don't get lemon discs... as fussy as my Toshiba HD-A35 is with scratched discs... I am worried I spent so much money on them and they might not play 100% for me. On top of the news that Toshiba "may" be dropping HD DVD all together now...:eek:

Nothing to worry about. Amazon has a replacement set in the mail. You player will not stop working. Worst case scenario Paramount will make it right.

I got my phaser remote in yesterday (Monday)! Thanks CBS for the quick turnaround! Thanks UPS for working on President's Day, too! :cool:

It's a pretty cool remote, too. Haven't entered my codes yet. The sounds and lights are cool. My nephew was running around the house shooting everyone. lol.

My remote showed up on the 14th or 15th. I guess venting does do some good.:D
