I'm sure this has been asked but here it is again. I just bought a 46" Samsung LCD TV. I have an HTPC that is connected via dvi to hdmi cable. The audio is connected directly to my surround sound with a digital coaxial cable.

Is there a converter that I can use to connect the dvi and the coaxial from the computer and output it to an hdmi cable and run the audio and video into the tv?

I found such a device but it is $240 and out of stock at my regular computer store website. I know I'm not the first one with this question and I would have to believe that there is a solution. It may not be an affordable solution but any information would be greatly appreciated.

i believe you are looking for something like this:

clicky (http://www2.dvigear.com/codvidiautoh.html)

$250... no, they aren't cheap...

here's another... clicky (http://www.lenexpo-electronics.com/ATLONA-DVI-DIGITAL-AUDIO-TO-HDMI-CONVERSION-BOX-p-16588.html)... even worse, $270...

Yup. I think I looked at both of those. I wonder if the box actually converts anything or if it is just a connection point for the audio. We know the video doesn't need converted. It is native between the two connector types. The audio however, is going from s/pdif to HDMI. I'm trying to find some resources that list the signaling specs and wiring diagrams of each. As long as there is no processing involved it should be as simple as a circuit board and a few connectors.

I may employ the talent of my uncle who is an electronics genius(no exaggeration).

y'know, i really don't know... you would think it would be just converting the spdif signal to the correct pin outs for hdmi... but i don't know, there could be something else going on there...

there's gotta be something on the web somewhere describing the spec for spdif, so if you got that, you (or he) could probably figure it out...

hey, if he can figure out how to make one cheap, he could probably make a few bucks on the 'bay selling them... :D

Here is what I have discovered since my last post.

I screwed myself, sorta. Anyone with an htpc could probably do this as long as their motherboard permits it. They have video cards that support an S/PDIF input from the motherboard and outputs through a DVI-? cable to hdmi.

I went the cheap route when I built my htpc since it was only being used to play videos, dvd's and music, I only have an AGP adapter. This limits me to about 2 cards from a brand I've never heard of. If you use PCI express however, you are golden. Plenty of these cards. Just look for cards that support atleast 1 HDMI and have an S/PDIF input.

ah, that sucks... :( cheaper to buy one of those adapters than a new motherboard and card...

I think I'll just leave it all alone for now. The only thing it affords me really is the ability to change the source on my tv without having to change the source on my stereo. That requires 2 remotes. I guess I'll live with it.

yea.

you could always get a universal remote.

My cable box remote is a universal remote but it won't change the source on the stereo.
