A3 bought 2mths ago (have'nt updated firmware yet). This is the first movie that has given me a hiccup out of the 12 movies I own.

When I first got the movie a few days ago. It played fine until chapter 17, then it would lock and state an error code. I could'nt do anything but power down the player and restart. I tried to go to chapter 17 manually through the scene selection and it locked again with the same error code. I tried this several times that night and it would not play chapter 17.

The only way it would work is if I skipped chapter 17 and went to 18.

Now for the sake of this post and to find what the error code was, I popped the movie in a few minutes ago, ffwd'd through most of chapter 16 and got ready to write the code down. Guess what........It played fine!

What's up with that?

Having a similar problem ... happens in Chapter 16. Error code started with 48 ... then didn't catch the rest of it.

(I have the XA2, with no recent firmware updates).

Washed the disc ... got through part of it, then it did it again at the start of Chapter 17. Gave up, flipped over to the non-HD side of the Combo disc to finish the movie (fortunately, the XA2 does a decent job of scaling).

Last discs I had this much trouble with were "Children of Men" (HD-DVD), and "Pursuit of Happiness" (Blu-ray). Arrrggg

I am sorry I know some people hate the idea of it but there is a little card in the case that says update your player to the latest firmware version. I f I remember correctly the latest update was mostly for this movie. (much like Miami Vice and Matrix).

Until you do those things you really aren't doing any troubleshooting yourself. It would be one thing if you didn't know that there are updates for your players but both of you said the opposite in your posts.

Thank you Topweasel. I don't have an issue doing the Firmware update ... just got the disk in the mail last week, so I really don't need a lecture :p And, with family members engrossed in the movie, no time really to do a firmware upgrade at the moment. Also ... the previous discs have had issues (residue or scratches), so posting for other input is a logical thing to do.

I indicated I hadn't done the firmware update because I thought that might be relevant information, as I assume the OP did. As it happened, I opened the disc in a darkened room and put it into the player, so didn't see the note.

Thanks!

I have an A3 and had not updated the firmware (wasn't broke so didn't fix it). OOTP was the first disc I had any problems with. It errored out where the snake was about to attack Mr. Weasly (not sure what chapter).

I already had the firmware update downloaded so I burned it and did the update. Haven't had a problem with OOTP since then.

I am just saying, Its hard to figure out if someone is blaming the disc or player when they posts complaints and or issues, when you add on the fact that the two of you haven't done one of the primary things that solves most of the issues people have faced it makes it hard not to comment on it.

NO problem ... happy to know the update is the fix (it's in progress as I type). Haven't spent much time around AVS the last few months, so just a bit behind the times.

Just wanted to let you folks know I have a A-3 updated. And OOTP is failing at Chapter 17.

I plan on taking the movie back for an exchange.

On a lot of normal software, I would say the same thing about updating it. (I work in IT, and the constant updates many programs give are rarely necessary (cough *adobe* cough) and are usually annoying) However it seems that with HD DVD players, many times a new firmware is necessary to properly play the newest HD DVDs. I usually check for a firmware update every time I buy a new release just in case there is anything out there.

From what I've seen, "is your firmware up to date?" is usually the first question here people will ask when having problems with movies. Granted, HP Order of the Phoenix is a combo disk much of the time (unless you got the box set or an import like me), so that brings its own problems sometimes too.

Wouldn't play at all on my father-in-law's new A3 with updated firmware. Played fine, though a little slower to start-up than usual on my XA2 at home.

I cannot play OOTP on either one of my A2s, both updated to latest firmware. Locks up in the exact same place on both machines, so it's prob a bad disc. Error code is dreaded 403bc504. BTW, the SD side won't play at all in my A2. Will try to swap disc at BB

I had no problems at all on my A-2 with latest firmware already installed. I do think it took an extra 3 or 4 seconds to load the disc, which was making me nervous for those couple of seconds.

Anyone seeing audio lip sync issues with this disc? About 20 minutes in, when Harry is in court, my lip sync goes off by about 4 seconds. Taking it to Wal-Mart for an exchange, just wanted to see if anyone else has the same issue?

FWIW - XA2 with 2.7
