View Full Version : Just got a D3, was looking at movies. Did I make a mistake?
Was out today looking at movies while I wait for my boxing day D3 special to arrive and noticed that there seems to be a ton more on Blu-Ray. Am I crazy, is there a site out there that compares both and says which titles are both and exclusive? Have I bought into the cheap HD-DVD hype?

cdhender 12-26-07, 08:20 PM There are a lot of great movies on both formats. The truth is that if you only own one format, yes you will be missing out.

You're kidding right? The total amount of movies released on either format is about the same...just less than 400 each, give or take 15 titles.
Do I have to go through and compare myself or am I missing something? No list?
I guess I must have picking up the ones that were just the blu-rays...Lost...Simpsons....I found the supporting studios.....I cancel out Sony but the others are meh....

You are awfully demanding.
You are awfully demanding.
Yet again a question not a demand...lots of love going on in here tonight....
But mightnightwatcher thank you very much...Atleast you answered my question....Rep for him.....All you others...Shame.....

It's not real hard to look at various web sites to see what is out there for both formats. Your post was just asking to be called a troll and for pbvious reasons. Both formats have great movies do some homework.
You can check out http://www.highdefdigest.com
They have reviews for a good portion of available titles on both formats, and to my knowledge a list of available and announced titles on both formats. Both sides have a fair amount of good titles, but it is up to you to decide if you made a good choice or not. I wouldn't base that on titles that you see in a small sample of B & M stores though as we all here know that can be rather misleading.:)
Paulidan 12-26-07, 09:02 PM kind of hard to to believe someone could be aware of 'the hype' and not be aware there was differences in the catalogs available to both formats.

You bought a HD DVD player, but purchased movies which clearly say Blu-ray on them?
Blu-ray movies are in blue cases with Blu-ray on the top. HD DVD movies are in red cases with HD DVD on the top.
I'm not sure how much more either side could do.

Go look on his profile and go through his other posts. He's a walking cluster...but that doesn't make him a Troll.
The part I don't get is that he's been a member for 4 years yet doesn't seem to navigate the internets very well.
Plus many, many movies have a sticker on them informing you that you either need a HD-DVD player or a Blu Ray player to watch the movie.
4 years and ~160 posts?
Does kinda smack of a troll. Give him the benefit of doubt, and go educate yourself before making a purchasing decision, OR get both format players and dont worry about the format specifics.

meh... eh? All three Bourne movies? Blood Diamond? FIVE Blade Runner versions? Heros? Blue Planet? The Pianist? Pan's Labyrinth? Serenity? T3? Pride & Prejudice? Unforgiven? Cinderella Man? the Riddick movies? Million Dollar Baby? All three Matrix movies? These are but a few of my HD DVD collection.
I guess everyone has different taste but I am absolutely thrilled with the titles available and quality on my 10' wide screen I sit 1 screen width back from.
I originally went with HD DVD because at the time the Blu group wasn't using the better codecs and it showed in the reviews. Now the Blues seem to have caught up quality-wise, but I still like the HD DVD selection better. I'm not a big fan of FOX, Disney and Sony.
Look around some more before you despair on the format. There's some really great stuff out there and more on the way!
I bought movies that were blu-ray? What? Opps sorry I meant to say saw or looked at...Man I might be a newbie to the HD war but not that bad...Vultures I tell ya! I had tried googling lists but just could not find anything compared to what you guys sent...Thank you very much! Troll? Sure I guess....Whatever gets you through the day.....

And no, you didn't buy into hype, you bought into a seriously awesome format.

for some reason, several retailers are giving a larger profile (more shelf space) to Blu-ray over HD DVD- when they both have close to the same amount of titles.
It doesn't help that BB is bad for Universal catalog on street dates.
camperjoe 12-26-07, 10:08 PM BB? Do you mean Best Buy (BBY)? It can appear so as in two of my local BBY stores, Sony Blue Ray players on the end caps and no HD players even connected to a TV.
If things have not changed that much since my part time days at BBY the manufacturers paid for shelve space and end caps on the main aisles were prime real estate. BBY sales staff were strongly encouraged to promote certain manufacturers. Wanna guess which ones? Thus far my experience is that local BBY staff have a Blue ray bias, some staffers more than others
In one store at first glance it even appears that there are more Blue Ray movies because all the Blue Rays are on one side of one aisle while the HD-DVDs are are split half on one side of the aisle and theother in rthe next aisle.

That's what I gf thought as well over the weekend here at NYC's BB 23rd store..There are couple more isles than HD...Hmm the understand that whole concept..
Take this too HD Media Forum, please!
Happy New Year.

There are a lot of hd dvd movies out so you're fine. I think both formats are about equal in the releases.
If you got the D3 at futureshop for the whopping price of 100 bucks then I don't think you should really be concerned. :)
thematrix49 12-27-07, 12:09 AM +1 ... $99 for a player with two good movies... plus the mail in rebate for 5 more ... I don't want to hear any complaints :D or else myself or about 5,000 others would be more than willing to take it off your hands.
The others are right... there are about equal numbers in terms of releases. Personally, it will depend what kind of movies you like. For myself, I find HD DVD offers many more quality movies that I would like to own. Blu Ray has some, but many more flicks in my opinion that I might rent at best.
Cheers... enjoy your new player!! Go out and pick up the Bourne Ultimatum and Transformers and you will be extremely happy.
I don`t believe the D3 getsthe 5 freebies...Ah well I`ll spend the extra cash I saved on other movies...

It should qualify. Assuming you got it in Canada, the rebate form states 'Toshiba HD DVD Player (all models)' as one of the qualifying items.

It's up to you if the offer is worth $10. I easily found 4 (the third group with TMNT I don't really care for).
Yeah my bad! I was looking at the American rebate and could not find the Canadian rebate. LET THE COLLECTION BEGIN!!!!!

As others have said already, both formats have roughly the same amount of titles available in North America. And the studio support ispretty close to identical now since Paramount dropped Blu-Ray. Does Blu-Ray have more summer blockbusters from 2007? Yes, if you consider Fantastic Four 2 (actually available on HD DVD via import), Spiderman 3, Pirates 3 and The Simpsons Movie to be "must-owns"! Personally, I prefer the slate of titles on HD DVD head & shoulders above those on Blu-Ray!
I own 250 movies on HD DVD already! You have available films such as The Bourne films, Transformers, King Kong, Apollo 13, Batman Begins, V For Vendetta, The Matrix trilogy, Hot Fuzz, Shaun Of the Dead, Dawn Of the Dead, Lost In Translation, The Big Lebowski, Casino, Goodfellas, Blade Runner, The Departed, Oceans 11, 12, 13, Harry Potters, Star Trek, The Sting, The Good Shepherd, Face Off, Mission Impossible films, SUperman, Superman 2, Superman Returns, 300, Heroes, The Untouchables, The Thing, Casablanca, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Blood Diamond, Battlestar Galactica, Miami Vice, The Mummy, 40-Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Scent Of A Woman, American Werewolf In London, Animal House, Shrek the Third, The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty
...and many of these are currently available in BOGO sales at amazon and Best Buy! Frankly, I don't see how you'd afford every great movie available on the format if you're just starting to build a collection now! My advice would be, stop complaining & start buying! ;) I wish I didn't own every title I want with these great sales going on -- many discs cost under $10 right now after the savings!
ditch-digger 12-27-07, 08:22 AM i look at it this way.
i own a ps3, and an a1.
when i want popcorn movies or something for the kids. blu ray
when i want something serious or adult like...hd-dvd
may be just me, but thats what i see both formats for.?
OhioMike 12-27-07, 10:36 AM OP...I think what you are seeing is exactly what I saw at first. BR did seem to have the better selection of movies to me at first as well, which is why I went BR first and then later bought my A3. But this was kind of a brain tease...I think it was because I saw more movies I couldn't live without on BR..Pirates series, American Psycho and most Nicholas Cage films (my fav) were BR. But HD has just as many great titles and especially now after the past few weeks it is just getting even better. HD has all the great comedies with Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, most Sandler movies. Past few weeks saw huge editions to the line-up (Bourne series, Eastern Promises, The Kingdom..all blockbuster exclusives) and now that HD-DVD is on the BOGO train, you have made a great decision. Come February, there will probably be some good deals on BR players and then you can have both and not miss out on anything. But for now...you will go broke or run out of time before you run out of great movies to buy for your A3. Welcome to the Hi-Def club!!
As many have stated, the numbers released on each format are roughly the same. That being said, I'd expect Blu-Ray to have slightly more of a selection of higher profile titles as it pulls from 4 major studios (where as HD DVD only has 3). Yes, HD DVD has some Warner exclusives right now, but at this point Blu Ray should have more going forward (since Fox is actually releasing stuff).
Now that being said, you'll miss out one a chunk of stuff with only one format, no matter the format. If you go only with one, I'd look to see what I really wanted and what format that was on. If nothing stands out, I think you're fine. But if you find and overwhelming majority of stuff is from Fox or Sony and/or Disney, maybe you should consider switching or buying both formats.
lemming75 12-27-07, 11:17 AM I'm beginning to think that I'm alone in believing that HD-DVD has the better catalog.
My BB here in Santa Rosa has equal display areas for BR and HD. They also have a stack of HD players next to a stack of BR players... it seems pretty equal and they get my dollar for their trouble.
That said, they don't sell the cheap HD player. They're touting the $299 one (for $249 after xmas).

I'm beginning to think that I'm alone in believing that HD-DVD has the better catalog.
You're not ;) I've enjoyed my catalog titles more than some of the recent blockbusters with the exception of Transformers, Bourne, and some others. I'm very happy with HD DVD.
Jamesman0 12-28-07, 12:49 PM I also really enjoy the HD DVD catalogue titels. I have found that I buy Blu Ray and HD DVD in the same quantity (more catalogue titles from HD DVD and more New realeases from Blu Ray). Although I do prefer HD DVD over Blu Ray simply because HD DVD feels like a more finished product.
As for the D3. I quite like it. I was fortunate enough to pick one up and it works flawlessly. The picture quality is excellent, and is equal to my A2. I think that anyone that bought this player for 99$ got a steal. People still pay that much for upconverting players.
Mr Snappy 12-28-07, 01:09 PM I'm beginning to think that I'm alone in believing that HD-DVD has the better catalog.
Obviously, that depends greatly on the movies you like. I have a HD-DVD player, but honestly, half the movies that I want are Blu-Ray, Half HD. The main stuff for BR is the Disney stuff, and we already own all that on SD-DVD, so I can live with the Pixar stuff being upconverted on my D3. Cars looks amazing.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm not going to make the same financial mistake that I made with SD-DVD's. I bought everything I could lay my hands on for awhile, blind buys, marginal quality, and movies I knew I would probably only watch once. With this player, I am not doing that. I am only buying movies with replay value.
Damn amazon is not making that strategy easy with the BOGO offers though :) But I have kept it under control. Except for Bladerunner, which I consider more of a box set, I will not pay over $20.00 for ANY movie, regardless of format. An example is Harry Potter. If I can get the SD version for $14.00 and the HD version is $35.00, I'm getting SD. Now, if the price is $20.00 for the HD, I will pay that much extra.
Mr Snappy 12-28-07, 01:12 PM Also, I have the Costco D3 player, and mine has worked flawlessly. I burned an update disk after reading this forum and it could not have been easier. The player took the update and all is well :)

to answer your question, i hope....It's all in what you like. There was a poll done on this AVS somewhere asking about studios that they like. I have HD DVD and i would get BR honestly due to the titles that I like from Disney, Fox and Sony.
If you look HERE on AVS, there are threads that have a master list (seperate formats) of what you can get.
Remember though, Studios don't always have the same distribution rights here in the states as overseas. HD DVD is also region free. So a Sony movie like Ghostrider from France can be viewed on your player.....So to ramble.....
underdog57 12-28-07, 03:59 PM There are some pretty strong rumors that a studio or two will release movies in Hd-dvd.
I'm sticking to Hd-dvd and do not intend on blu-ray in my house EVER ...
OP , your player is compliant with the features as promised . Blu has a lot of twice as expensive players that do not fully perform ...
I am still ticked off about the lies and crumby attitude from blu-ray ..
Enjoy your player and movies , My opinion is ya did great !!
Bob
Mark Zimmer 01-02-08, 04:05 PM I'm beginning to think that I'm alone in believing that HD-DVD has the better catalog.
You're not. I'm more interested in good renditions of catalogue titles than current crap, and HD DVD does a much better job with that than BD. If Fox would ever release some of the titles it announces, that could change but so far nothing has compelled me to visit the Blu side of life.

Movie selection for both formats is about even. Maybe you should have done your homework before you bought a player if you prefer Disney, Columbia, and Fox releases over Universal and Paramount.
Lebronze 01-02-08, 05:34 PM I must be lucky, because my Best Buy has almost every movie available for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
Plus, I've overheard store employees helping customers, even giving them good, FAIR advice about both formats. They usually tell you Blu-Ray gets you stuff like Disney, Spiderman, whereas HD will get you Transformers, etc. which is something alot of consumers suprisingly do not know.
Its always great though when I'm holding both blu-rays and hd-dvds, I get alot of funny looks
Brad1963 01-02-08, 07:50 PM If you want all the movies you have to support both formats, plain and simple. Prices for hardware at at affordable levels now. There is no reason to stick to one format at this point of the game.
wallijonn 01-02-08, 08:44 PM I don't know about you guys, but I'm not going to make the same financial mistake that I made with SD-DVD's. You mirror my sentiments exactly. I will only be replacing the movies I love and love to watch many times. Other than "National Treasure" (not yet out) and perhaps the first two Pirates of the Carribbean movies, I basically have no interest in Disney movies. I saw the third Pirates movie and the theatre and am not interested in owning it, on HD or SD. Maybe for $5.
As I said in another thread, I think Resident Evil 3 may have looked better on HD than BD since BD is many times too sharp. Conversely, many feel that WB movies are too soft. For some reason I get a feeling that HD has a more film like quality to it than BD, while BD has more of a video like quality. Part of that is the settings that I have to resort to on my TV. I find that HD can be played in Standard mode, to sharpen it, but I have to soften BD movies by resorting to Cinema mode. It is all very subjective.
BTW, I don't believe in bit rates. If you put any SD movie in a PS3 it'll probably show it around 7mb/s, but the film itself may be crap or great, look grainy or sharp, have good shadow details or macroblocking. A washed out scene may still register 40mb/s, but so what? It still looks like crap.
Amazon's BOGO is killing me, along with Fry's half off sales. I must have spent over $300 on movies this holiday season. I'm still waiting for Underworld Evolution to go on sale because I am not paying over $20 for it, not after having seen it on sale at Fry's for $10 three weeks ago. I just wish that Fry's, BestBuy and WalMart had stocked up with many more titles, especially for HD-DVD. I couldn't find a copy of King Kong anywhere. Not that I would've paid $35 for it, mind you.
One thing about HD-DVD, one has to have more patience because of all the BD BOGOs. Amazon at least is throwing us a bone, although the HD BOGO lists about half the BD BOGO:
