I already bought Blade Runner haven't opened it yet. I have heard in some reviews that it is slow and a bit boring. Should I return it for The Kingdom? Is that a better movie?

Depends on what you like. Blade Runner is considered to be a masterpiece of a film (and I agree), but it's not an action movie. It has action sequences, but there's a lot of talking and thinking and feeling and stuff like that, which is why it bores some people.

If you primarily want to see action (chases and fights and shooting and explosions), then it's not for you.

In terms of value, Blade Runner is definitely the choice. I recently watched The Kingdom from Netflix, and it was a decent movie, but I'd give the edge to Blade Runner. IMO, Blade Runner is no slower (or boring, for that matter) than The Kingdom.

BING BING BING, give that man a cigar.

I would lean towards Blade Runner myself, but I am a Phillip K. Dick fan so my opinion is not be trusted in such matters. Still 5 HD DVDs for less than $30 is a better bargain than one HD DVD/DVD Combo for less than $30.

I have not seen The Kingdom and it has received mixed reviews, but as a general rule I think Hollywood does a better job with Sci-Fi than they do with any film related to the Military.

Blade Runner slow and boring? Never heard that before. Anyway, The Kingdom is a mediocre movie that will be forgotten by the end of the month. Blade Runner has been talked about for over 25 years. You make the decision.

Blade runner was a movie made that was 20 years ahead of its time. Just like Alien was too. You have to own the movie. The music in the movie just makes the movie. Not to mention Rutger Hauers first bigtime role.

I'm pretty sure nobody here is going to recommend the Kingdom over Blade Runner.

BR is pretty harcore sc-fi and isn't going to be appealing to some people because of that reason, but it's not what I would consider "slow and boring".

I rented The Kingdom and would have been very happy had I picked it up as a blind buy. I was impressed, it wasn't just a bunch of action scenes lumped together. Seems like they actually took their time and planned the scenes right. Plus, has some pretty nifty special features.

I just ordered blade runner (have not seen it yet) so I am not attempting to compare the two. My wife is a huge sci-fi fan, so I'm highly anticipating this movie.

Why is this thread unbelievable?

Sounds like you need to take it back and get The Kingdom. I own both and if action is what you want, the last 30 minutes of The Kingdom alone would be worth more than Blade Runner. I agree with everyone else though, Blade Runner is an overall better movie.

Sounds like you're looking for Transformers. Try that one. Blade Runner is my favorite HD DVD of around a hundred that I own, but then I've always been more into story than explosions.

for what its worth, blade runner all of the way.

Blade Runner is better but don't go into the Kingdom expect a bunch of action. It's a police procedural drama with a little action mixed in.

Rent both and then decide what movie you like. You may end up liking both.

You don't necessarily have to rent the HD versions as they may not that easily attainable in the near future.

Blade Runner is easily the better film. The Kingdom does pack a lot of action in there, but if you're only buying one of them right now, Blade Runner is the way to go. It definitely makes my "top 5" list for must own HD DVDs...maybe even tops it. You can't really go wrong with it.

Movies like The Kingdom get lost over time, like tears in the rain.

How many times can you watch Kingdom and see something new?

I have seen Blade Runner 6 times in the theater and over 20 times on home video and I STILL find little pieces of detail that I didn't see before. You literally have to move the movie frame by frame to say you have seen everything.

I think this is an important point. I don't think there's any doubt Blade Runner is the superior film, however it depends on the audience IMO. Not to over generalize, there are females that enjoy Blade Runner but it's definitely the type of movie that appeals much more to men. So if I'm sitting down to watch something with my wife it definitely won't be BR. She'd be asleep less than 30 minutes in. The Kingdom on the other hand still has a bit of a male slant, but is much more balanced in terms of gender appeal.

One of the worst... But there seems to be quite a bit of these types of threads disturbingly enough.

What ever happened to watching movies because they're great movies that you love, and not just watching because it shows off your system or has the best HD video quality. The technology doesn't mean jack sh*t if you don't/can't appreciate movies.

Why would Someone even have an HD or BD player if they're not a film fan?

Remember they're films/movies not software/videos.

Interesting. We were discussing this on a Blade Runner thread.

theforce8686: You're of course entitled to your opinion, but the movie has a devoted following for a reason. I suspect that you watched the Final Cut and found it boring. You may feel differently if you give the International Cut with the voiceover a try.

McCheese: The HDM versions of Blade Runner include versions with and without the voiceover. I recommend the Final Cut (without) and the International Cut (with).

Another vote for both. At least that is what I did. I am camping out for a month at my brothers due to a month delay in my loft being ready.

I figure I will have about 20 HD-DVD's ready to watch when my HT comes out of storage and both BR (one of my all time favorites) and The Kingdom (one of the 2-3 best movies I have seen this year along with DH4 (ironically) are among them.

Cheers,

Unfortunately, the majority of the people who are in the HD camp on either side (or both) are NOT film lovers. The majority of the arguments I have had with people tend to be over spec nonsense or stupid films I wouldn't rent. My opinion is that HD media attracts the middle-class/well to do male who is obsessed with having the "best" stuff...the better the HDTV and audio gear the less they tend to care about movies as a whole.

Please don't flame me if you are an HDM supporter that doesn't fall into that category as I am one myself (I just bought the Lives of Others with a gift card at BB on Blu Ray....that means its sold at least one copy :) ) It just irks me that 3 out of 4 people who have spent oodles of money on decent HD gear are just that... people spending money and not die hard movie lovers...

Blade Runner is an epic movie like 2001 but then again it all depends what kind of movie you are looking for.

BR and 2001 suffer from sever bang/hype ratio overload from enthusiasts. Now, I like Blade Runner, but it is a flawed film - witness the different versions that abound. I watched the HD DVD and it was stunning, and I enjoyed the Final Cut (final for now at least). But the rest of the family - bleh. It's not their type of film. That doesn't mean they don't "get it", it means that what some find as smart and paced they find odd and tedious.

I will watch The Kingdom more than BR. It's more accessible, it's not dated (BR is dated folks, we aren't all going to be speaking Japanese in LA, another hoary 80's future film faux pas, the Japanese culture invasion monkey), and it's a more cohesive story.

why, to argue online about the amount of grain/noise reduction in various film encodes, of course! nobody actually watches these films straight through do they? you have to pause it and study the still frames to determine to what degree the studio has ruined things! :p

The narration was NEVER intended to be there but the studio forced it upon the theatrical release. The Director's Cut does NOT have the narration. If you get the 5 disc version, you get each version of the film ever screened, so if you prefer the narration, it is there in HD. The best of all worlds.

I just picked it up but have not had time to sit down to watch them. And while the OP may be betraying either youth or a limited amount of film watching, it doesn't mean he didn't buy Blade Runner (as one poster suggested). I have at least 30 (if not 40) DVDs and HD DVDs that are still new in the wrapper. Not everyone watches a film 1-2 days after buying it.

12-29-07, 03:28 PM
When Blade Runner was first released, it did not get the cultish attention as it is now. In fact it was a mediocre release. I saw it then and was impressed with the visual aspect of the movie, but less so on the story. Fast forward to now, I have seen the Final Cut and this movie emote differently to me now.

I would not say as some posters say that The Kingdom will be forgotten in a month. No one would know that. This movie may be prescient as the developing news events unfolds in the next twenty years. Time has a way of being fickle.

To the OP, rent it first before opening the purchased disks. If you don't like it, you can always exchange it.

I'd like to confess something: I shed a tear at the end of The Kingdom. It's a guy thing I suppose. Kudos to Danny Elfman's wonderfully understated score, and to Elfman himself not phoning it in for the first time in nearly 20 years.

The kingdom. I don't know what the big hype is about Blade Runner. I saw it last night for the first time on a personal rental. Last time I saw it was in the movies. After watching it, I now know why I have only seen it twice since it's theatrical debut. The movie looks dated as it should. The video was nothing out of the ordinary. I watched it with the A35 on a 103" screen. To be honest the movie is so dark that you could probably watch it in SD and not notice much difference. THis is just my opinion and I am sure others like it. But, for me, I am glad I rented it for 5.00 at Hollywood video instead of buying the movie.
