I just saw the Day of the Jackal on cable the other day on Universal HD. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's basically a movie from early 70's about an assassin that is trying to kill Charles DeGaule in France. It's the first time I've seen it (or even heard of it) and I really enjoyed it.

Anyone know of anything related to an HD-DVD release? I would really like to see it again in HD,but it doesn't seem like they are playing it anytime soon and the SD version looks like garbage to me.

thanks

"day of the jackal" is a great movie, and i would buy it for sure...

unfortunately, i think it would be WAY down the list of catalog releases... :( my guess is that it will be a long time (if ever) before it comes out on hdm...

It got a piss poor review in some German site. Double check before you purchase this title.

What are you talking about exactly? The movie itself, the DVD, or the HD transfer?

I saw an HD transfer on TV and it looked pretty good (not reference quality or anything but definitely acceptable), but the DVD looks terrible.

If you haven't seen the movie already, I couldn't recommend it enough. It doesn't sound good when you hear someone describe it, but it's really an excellent film. Top notch story and plot development. It has underrated classic written all over it.

I think they did a remake or something just called "The Jackal", and I heard that was pretty bad.

Wrong movie. "The Day of the Jackal" is an excellent movie based on the Forsyth novel that is not available on HD-DVD. I have the UHD broadcast on my TivoHD. "The Jackal" is an ok movie that has nothing in common with the former movie except there's an assassin involved.

now THAT makes a bit more sense... as i said in my original post, "the day of the jackal" is a great movie... very intense suspense thriller... a classic film...

"the jackal", otoh, with bruce willis, is bleh...

i have GOT to pay more attention to what is on UHD... i would have recorded that... :(

I will post the date and time if they air it again anytime soon. I can't believe I've never seen this movie until recently. I wonder why it is not brought up more when discussing classic films?

I guess I won't hold my breath for an HDM release. Are the rights at least owned by someone in the HD-DVD camp?

thanks, i'd appreciate it if you did... :)

it's kind of a "forgotten classic"... hard to say why, because if you bring it up, others will say "oh yea, that was great/good", but for some reason, it doesn't jump to the forefront of people's minds... it's really a solid example of moviemaking techniques as well...

Perfectly honest mistake. They both have "Jackal" in the name and have plots about an assassin.

Just to reiterate, I'm NOT talking about the relatively recent Bruce Willis flick.
