High Def Digest has compiled a list of the Top 10 (five worst) high def releases of 2007. HD DVD owners could watch 8 out of the top 10, Blu-ray owners could watch 7. (Neutral folks like myself saw all ten.)

It's worth a look. I'd be interested in hearing the level of agreement/disagreement around here.

Interesting...4 of the 10 I have no interest in. I own one of them (on HD DVD) and could watch them all if I had the urge.

Transformers should have made the list, at least an honorable mention somewhere.

How could they leave off Transformer?

Ya, seriously odd that they didn't include Transformers on that list anywhere!

Well, If paramount had included a LPCM track it would've made the top 10 -- Although they do get points for the excellent AVC encode over a lower bitrate VC1 alternative (even if it would have allowed them to include a lossless track with the VC1).

So a lower bitrate VC1 with TruHD would've been the better way to go to satisfy both video and audio nuts - even with the slight hit in PQ. I can already forsee a future Transformers release in this fashion - if they could find a way to keep the AVC with DTS-HD or TruHD that would be ideal - TL51 disc maybe?

Why would a lossless audio encode have made any difference, given that it was one of the highest-rated audio releases of any HDM release in 2007?

Also, I think it's stretching to say that it would have taken a PQ hit....tough to prove.

Maybe Transformers didn't make it because the movie itself is not that great. The top 10 are good movies, whereas Transformers is an OK (IMO) movie with a great HDM release.

Though I enjoyed the likes of Pan's Labyrinth or The Lives of Others, Transformers will get many more repeat viewings than those two.

The overall winner was 300, so it seems the quality of the disc was more important than the quality of the movie itself.

Pretty sure it's a 3-part series, for the 3 main reviewers on the site - Kenneth Brown, Peter Bracke and Josh Zyber. Check back tomorrow for somebody else's list.
