View Full Version : Your top 5 HD DVDs of 2007!!
ocd_guy 12-28-07, 01:28 AM I know that 5 is a small number and a top 10 would have been better, but let's try and keep your top HD DVDs of 2007 down to a "Top 5" category.
My top 5 are as follows...
1) Transformers
2) 300
3) The Bourne Ultimatum
4) The Matrix Trilogy
5) The Matador (released in Canada in January 2007)
Honorable Mention...
Hot Fuzz
I have excluded Blade Runner solely because I have yet to receive my copy from Amazon, so I can't personally comment, but I am pretty comfortable in knowing that this HD DVD would probably take top honors.:)
Let's have some fun here!!

magarwal1217 12-28-07, 01:42 AM If we want to do this, we need clear-cut requirements. For example, are we judging based on quality of the movie itself, or the entire package (extras), or picture and audio quality?
thematrix49 12-28-07, 01:43 AM Well since I only bought into HD DVD in Feb... all my titles are from 2007. So here I go:

TV Casualty 12-28-07, 08:02 AM I've seen people listing Fearless and Batman Begins...those films are from 2006.
Since we don't have defined parameters to judge with, I'm going with the overall package rankings...best cross-section of good movie/show content, good PQ/AQ, with good packaging and extras being a bonus but not a dealbreaker:
1. Blade Runner - Shockingly feature-packed for something that costs so little. Outstanding picture and audio, and being probably the best sci-fi movie of all time doesn't hurt, either.
2. Transformers - The catalyst for the HD DVD resurgence did not disappoint.
3. Planet Earth - PQ squabbles for the elitists aside, this is the definitive showpiece disc for the format.
4. Clerks II - This fell off of people's radar since it came out right at the beginning of the year, but besides probably being Kevin Smith's best film, this 2 disc set was absolutely overstuffed with bonus features...many of which were in HD as well.
5. The Matrix Trilogy - After a long drought period at the beginning of 2007, the announcement of this was what gave people a glimmer of hope. The "ultimate" collection was a bit underwhelming with flipper discs and non-trilogy content in SD, but the trilogy itself looked and sounded fantastic.
Honorable mention to 2001.

I suppose I could have set some parameters, but I feel going with the top 5 in general gives everyone more freedom. If you liked an HD DVD for the special features content, picture quality, audio quality, or just loved the film in general or a combination of factors, please feel free to list away. It's solely up to you!:) You can keep the list to just the titles or you can add why you liked that specific title, etc.
My choices contained a combination of all of the above. Great films that just so happened to include good special features, great picture and sound presentations and overall collectability.
Let's keep this one going.

 can't people around here just do something without it being "official"?
Define "best" however you want, geez.

James A. McGahee 01-20-08, 01:49 AM I read somewhere about a great demo movie that perhaps starts out with a small screen perhaps SD and breaks into a big high def screen and brings a big WOW from viewers when it occurs. I can't remember the details. I've been lookin for an hour for that move but can't find it. Anybody?
cdhender 01-20-08, 01:56 AM Children of Men
Transformers
Matrix Trilogy
Planet Earth
Hot Fuzz
5. Transformers
4. Bourne Ultimatum
3. Pan's Labrynth
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
1. The Shining
@James: That must be The Road Warrior HD DVD. It starts for a minute or so with 4:3 aspect ratio, crappy sub VHS picture quality and mono sound - until you hear the sound of a tuned v8 engine approaching from the rears, roaring through your home cinema (crank it up LOUD!) and once the sound gets to your fronts, you are in Max' car and the aspect ratio opened to beatiful 21:9 with perfect HD quality. The image height remains the same by the way - looks awesome on a CIH setup.
dallasjetfan 01-20-08, 12:44 PM One person listed The Kingdom?? That's crazy!!
1. The Kingdom
2. Transformers
3. Bourne Ultimatum
4. Planet Earth (haven't seen, but just bought!)
5. Hot Fuzz (haven't seen, but also just bought!)
