Notes:
1) This is additional info to a video on the VP-15S1 in Issue 84 of TPV. The video is brief and a Marntz promo from CEDIA.

2) As with Shane's review in Ultimate AV, the color gamut used is Rec 709, resulting in the same slightly oversatured red and significantly oversatured green. In Greg's review he used SMPTE-C Rec 607 which even HD material is mastered on, and the colors were much closer.

3) The technical ratings are strange to say the least: 7 out of 10 on black level; 8 out of 10 for Genum video processing? The measurements are a bit strange, too.

Is it just me, or are we finding reviewers calibrating and doing their measurements on the 15S1 at iris 2 and 3. This test appears to be done at iris 3 in low lamp. 8(

I have seen these calibrated and they look phenomenal. Couple in the cost vs the HT380 and it's a great value as well.

I even have a client using one on a 188" diagonal 16:9 screen and it's plenty bright for him. You heard it here, 188" diagonal screen.

No projector is perfect. I frankly haven't seen the oversaturation in the ones we've viewed here.

I'm going back to my cave with my CRT rear pro and calling it a day!

TPV review used Rec. 709 to show the color gamut, as did Ultimate AV, showing oversatured colors.

But as Kris Deering and Greg Rogers have told us ALL video material produced today still uses Rec. 607 (SMPTE-C), even HD material, NOT Rec.709.

Thus the color gamuts in TPV and UltimateAV do not reflect reality, but some point in the future.

If you go to Greg Roger's review of the VP-15S1, he uses Rec. 607, and there is no gross oversaturation as shown in TVP and UAV. The color gamut is only slightly off. And THAT is what you are going to be viewing, not the color gamut for Rec 709.

When we did the primary and secondary color calibration on the W10000 we used SMPTE-C color windows for each color but calibrated the HD colorspace. Weird, but that will result in the accurate playback of HD material on the market today.
