View Full Version : "Mutiny on the Bounty" Owners Thread
SomethingMore 12-28-07, 06:34 PM The poll is simple:
a) I own "M.O.T.B." on HD DVD
b) I own "M.O.T.B." on HD DVD, and would pay up to $15 for a "M.O.T.B." themed T-shirt
c) I do not own "M.O.T.B." on HD DVD, but this thread makes me want to buy it
d) I do not own "M.O.T.B." on HD DVD, and never plan to.
SomethingMore 12-28-07, 06:37 PM The T-shirt would say something like:
"I am one of 500 people who own
Mutiny on the Bounty on HD DVD"
or
"I am the 'x'th person on AVS to own
Mutiny on the Bounty on HD DVD"
OggideM 12-28-07, 06:45 PM i do not yet own it but plan to within a few months (hopefully)
Morpheo 12-28-07, 07:17 PM What's the point of this poll (sorry OP)? I own it, it's a great movie, and it looks
stunning in HD.
SomethingMore 12-28-07, 09:19 PM I saw it mentioned in another thread that there were only 471 copies sold worldwide. I'm curious how many of those 471 were AVS members.
And I want to make T-shirts...

DVD BEAVER REVIEW OF MOTB (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews32/mutiny_on_the_bounty-HD.htm)
Grahamcracker 12-28-07, 10:05 PM I bought this, thinking I was getting the 1937 version (with Clark Gable and Charles Laughton). Then when I got it, I realized they had sent me the 1962 version with Brando. That annoyed me. But after seeing Eizenga's review, I think I'm going to sit down and watch it sometime soon.
eizenga13 12-28-07, 10:15 PM I presume you enjoyed the review then... Thank You, I certainly enjoyed it and I hope you will too.
narcopolo 12-28-07, 11:23 PM I've owned it for quite some time, but it's still sealed.
jrusnak 12-28-07, 11:27 PM MUTINY will be one of the first titles I buy when I finally do get an HD-DVD player. It may be heresy, but I prefer it far more than the staid 1937 edition. The lush Tahitian location shooting alone far surpasses the fake backdrops of the earlier version. And Brando's interpretation of Christian is an easily-identifiable source element of Johnny Depp's Captain Jack. Great score too! Although it is the least historically-accurate version (The Hopkins-Gibson version is closer to the truth), itis easily the most entertaining. As an aside, one of the pleasures of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE was seeing Brando & Trevor Howard face-off again after so many years!
Right now, I doubt that many HD-DVD owners even know that MUTINY is available! (Ditto CASABLANCA.) Wish the HD-DVD group did more in the way of promotion for its titles

My friend Al (who is not on AVS) has it and is very pleased with it. I intend to obtain it one of these days. If it is a combo, though, I probably won't, even though I admire the film.
cnikirk 12-29-07, 12:22 AM It's a great film for HD DVD. Every movie lover should own it.
I'm deeply upset at the lack of votes for 't-shirt'.
You miserable bunch. :D

What the hell! I'll vote for the t-shirt. (And one of these days I definitely plan to buy the movie on HD-DVD!)
After all, one doesn't often get to honor one of Brando's more eccentric performances!
The critics raked him over the coals but he's really very good in the film.
Gorgeous movie with an outstanding cast, beautiful cinematography and a stirring score by Bronislau Kaper.
jgantert 12-29-07, 09:32 AM I really liked this movie when I rented it from Netflix. I didn't realize so few were sold. Amazon needs to stick this in their next BOGO deal. :)
Brilliant movie , cracking photography , beautiful on Hd-Dvd !
When do we get a preview of t-shirt ? Will it feature Pacific scenery ? :)

HPforMe 12-29-07, 10:23 AM Good movie with an absolutely stellar transfer.
Agreed, unbelievable how good they made this film look. I see this, and then I see Spartacus, and the difference is night and day. I don't know how many times I will watch this film, but it was good, and looked great... a high bar set for all older films.

rdclark 12-29-07, 12:09 PM This is the version where Brando burst the seams on 52 pairs of pants, right?
I own the movie, but I didn't commit to the t-shirt. I guess I am miserable. :)
Can anyone confirm where the 651 sales figure comes from?
Where and when?

It comes from the week ending 3/18/07 Nielsen Videoscn report that Sony made public on the Digital Bits website back in march.
651 was 2006 YTD. For 1/1 to 3/18/07 - sales were 209

Grahamcracker 12-30-07, 01:08 PM Casablanca looks phenomenal -- but it's still a B&W film, so it gets blown away by the good Technicolor movies that are transferred correctly to HD. I'd recommend The Searchers as a prime example of what a great movie should look like in HD and Planet Earth as THE single greatest exemplar of HD DVD, ever. :D
williamtassone 12-30-07, 01:12 PM one of Brando's best films & easily one of my best High def movies

Grahamcracker 12-30-07, 06:51 PM I watched this today. Three hours of Ultra Panavision 70 goodness. Excellent PQ. Brando was channelling Cap'n Jack Sparrow (and apparently fattening up during filming), but he was darn good-looking when he was young. :D
Rachael Bellomy 12-30-07, 07:05 PM ....And I want to make T-shirts...
I'd suggest a Tee with somethin' like "who needs Bread Fruit anyway?"

I wasn't kidding about the 52 pairs of pants.

How about one with just a picture of Brando after the captain orders him to make love to the native girl:p That was hilarious.
hconwell 12-31-07, 02:29 AM I own it. Bought it simply because it's Ultra Panavision 70. I designed my CH screen to handle formats out to 2.76 ... so this film is sort of a showpeice for me.
But I actually think the film is flawed. The Tahiti portions are a little silly.
There is also some CA (looks like a lack of color seps registration) in the image ... mostly on the right side of the frame I believe. It's almost not visible on a TV ... but blown up on my front projection screen, it begins to not hold up.
I'm waiting for "Ben-Hur" to replace it as my anamorphic 65mm demo.
lemming75 12-31-07, 02:48 AM Watched it again this weekend. I still think its a stellar transfer, except for the few scratches. And I would definitely wear Rachael's "Bread Fruit" shirt with pride.
PS: Is it just me or did Anthony Hopkins develop his acting style from watching Brando?
jrusnak 12-31-07, 03:02 AM I Brando was channelling Cap'n Jack Sparrow D
As i mentioned in an earlier post, it's more like the other way around.
Vern Dias 12-31-07, 09:33 AM I also have a 2.76:1 screen and there are definitely color registration issues on the right side of the image.
It's a good transfer, but certainly not perfect.

hehe, why do I always find myself in these threads.... lol

.... at least it beats 1/623 ;)
underdog57 12-31-07, 11:42 AM Read Pitcarn island .
They must of ran out of time to have a true ending ....
But its hollywood , great movie anyhow.
I call it a must have on hd-dvd , looked great !!

dsa_shea 12-31-07, 12:49 PM I'm going to get this. I'm hoping it shows up on a B1G1F sale but I'm not holding my breath for that. I just recently bought the 2-disc SD edition.

Now, don't make the mistake of dismissing Black & White. Not only is Casablanca "still a black and white movie" but so is Citizen Kane and a host of other superbly crafted, photographed and lit films---- can you say, "Film Noir!"?
All should make superb HD discs!
EDIT-- Sorry! Didn't mention other little Brando B&W classics: Viva Zapata; On the Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire, etc.
Rachael Bellomy 12-31-07, 09:16 PM Watched it again this weekend. I still think its a stellar transfer, except for the few scratches. And I would definitely wear Rachael's "Bread Fruit" shirt with pride.?
Here's my revised idea, front, "I don't need no stinkin' Bread Plant..." , back, "...because I have Mutiny On The Bounty on HD-DVD".
Grahamcracker 01-01-08, 12:22 AM As i mentioned in an earlier post, it's more like the other way around.
you're right, I wrote it backward.
That silver lame outfit he wore at the beginning of the film was just too over the top. But that's what the foppish dandies wore back then.
As for B&W movies, some of them are the finest ever made. Beautifully photographed. But in my eyes they don't pop the way that a properly transferred Technicolor film does in HD. They don't make my jaw drop and my eyes goggle, like Planet Earth did.
