Agg!

I'm to the last step of installing a Sanus VMAA18 full articulating wall mount for my 47" Westinghouse TX-47F430S - mounting the wall plate. I didn't realize the studs are wider than the wall plate!

Is there any accepted standard for dealing with this? I was thinking that I could buy a piece of maybe 3/4" plywood, mount that to the studs and mount the wall plate to the plywood.

Any help appreciated.

Get a bigger bracket, one that will be at least 20" Wide.
I had a similar situation when I put up my 50" plasma. I wanted to screw into at least 3 studs and I could only reach 2 with the recomended bracket. I returned it and bought one for a bigger screen that was wide enough to reach 3 studs..

Cotty what you did is what I have done. All though usually we would go with a full on 2x4 that you mount to the studs with lag screws then mount the bracket to the 2x4's. Pulls the TV off the wall a bit but you will feel better in the end. If that TV is an LCD you can hang on studs on one side and use heavy duty Toggle Bolts. Your Dry wall is more than strong enough to hold up one side of an LCD.

Thanks for the replies. I've proceeded with the plywood idea, using 3/4" plywood. The wall bracket is attached to the plywood using 10 nuts and bolts and I've extended the lag screws by 1 1/2", putting them 3" into the stud. I also decided to use 6 lag screws instead of the 4 that came with the kit, to offset the additional load caused by moving the TV out 1 1/8" due to the plywood. (The extra 1/2" is due to plywood "strips" on the back of the 3/4" plywood which compensates for the bolt heads sticking out the back of the 3/4" plywood.

I did investigate getting a different wall plate. Best Buy wanted an additional $200 for a bigger arm system. I didn't feel the additional cost (putting the arm @ something like $500!!!) was warranted or needed.

Thanks again for the help.

I had the same issue with an interior wall.

I lagbolted 3 2x4s across te studs. I then lagbolted the mount to those 3 2x4s.

Glad I found this post, I am new here. Going too be mounting a 42 pz80 Panny in a corner. I have been bouncing my head off the wall trying to figure the best way. The corner already has built in shelves. I am getting the Adjustable Tilting/Swiveling Wall Mount Bracket from monoprice #3724. My walls though are covered in 3/4 pine board at an angle. I can only hit 2 wall studs and I think using 3 2x4's with lag bolts and also lagbolts with the wall mount plate will be good. The Tv then will be pulled out and swiveled into place. I was hoping to use the supplied stand, but it sticks out like 7 inches off one of the shelves.

Sound good... :) I hope so!!!
