View Full Version : Getting really irritated!
LowTech1 12-29-07, 11:40 PM Seriously,I was looking at both players. They both put out crippled players that could have been great and sold a crapload..I mean all someone needed to do is do,dual format and have all the sound codecs correct,I mean, seriously, how freaking hard is it? Panny can do it.Pioneer can do it.Samsung did it with a firmware update to the 1400..Just make one right get it out there and it would out sell anything..I'm just beside myself on the stupidity..Plus,they can't even give us any answers about when or if there is going to be a firmware update..Its just BS..
Yeah I agree, but what can you do? Best just to wait for them to get it sorted, there are always teething problems with new technology.
XBRSteve 12-29-07, 11:57 PM I know exactly how you feel. No offense to people who own them but these units are junk to me unless they straighten out these audio issues and the inability to play certain BluRay discs. They seem to have less problems with HD-DVD's but the audio is my biggest hang up.
LowTech1 12-30-07, 02:02 AM The audio is mine also.. Can people even tell between the 24hz and 60hz difference in picture quality? Is it really that diff ? Its just maddening that they put a dual player out and can't even put a statement on their website to let you know when a firmware update is coming and what's in it like the ps3.. I'm not going to buy a dual player and hope they are coming out with one,let alone one that will fix the audio part.. I hope LG and Samsung lose their asses over their lacking product..
Mr. Good Cat 12-30-07, 02:47 AM see sig.
vinnie97 12-30-07, 04:09 AM What's your take on the LG? Quit being difficult and include that in your scathing assessment if you want to truly be fair.
Mr. Good Cat 12-30-07, 04:29 AM LG is a piece of junk too but I knew it would be and I wasn't waiting for it. the 5000 really let a lot of us down. I am glad some enjoy it....but for 800 beans, I expect a little more.
vinnie97 12-30-07, 04:44 AM They're both using the same primary "guts"...might want to add Broadcom to the list also, that being the most visibly common thread between the players and all.
Mr. Good Cat 12-30-07, 06:38 AM So be it. Broadcom in general is junk. Bottom line is that these players have a chip in them that are supposed to support advanced audio and video. Both of these players are lacking either because Broadcom has problems or LG/Samsung has problems.
At $799.99 and $999.99 respectively, these players and the "guts" inside are junk.
Paul Cordingley 12-30-07, 06:55 AM Can people even tell between the 24hz and 60hz difference in picture quality? Is it really that diff ?
It's not a difference in picture quality - it's a difference in frame rate, and yes, it really is that different and as far as I am concerned absolutely required.
videonut 12-30-07, 11:56 AM I guess for those who are legally blind, audio would be the number one issue :)
LowTech1 12-30-07, 12:37 PM LG is garbage also..They just pushed these players into the market..As soon as some company comes out with a quality product they will sell like hot cakes..Seriously,who is Buying the Samsung 1400 or the Panny bd30? Not many..Panny and Pioneer have everything right. Why would you not have the advanced audio codecs ready? I don't understand that for the life of me. Does anyone know if,when you put a hd dvd disk in on the sammy if that icon lights up? And if you put a blu ray disk in if that icon lights up,to tell you which one is in..I know the LG does it..I think its pretty cool..
One man's junk is another man's gold, I suppose. I just received my 5000 and am pretty impressed with it. Now, I do use an external scaler so all HDM output is set to 1080p24, but I have had no disc playback problems so far (which I have had fairly frequently with my HDDVD and BR separates). I do not see the digital 'grain' that many have complained about, so perhaps the culprit is the reon processor which I am bypassing.
I don't get too hung up on the audio codec issues as I figure they will get fixed. So, for now (so far) the 5000 is a winner in my eyes.

That's funny,I was laughing and its true.. I have nothing against the 5000. I'm sure its awesome, but after hearing the difference in sound quality with lossless,I have to have it. Plus I didn't spend $850 on an Onkyo 805 for nothing. I want to see True dolby HD and DTS MA light up! Yes,I am greedy! :) I will buy it after the firmware patch, whenever it comes out.

-1It is reported by some that it won't play Fox super-protected DRM^max discs. Others have no problem. Seems to be a config issue. No doubt this will be corrected in an update, just like it was for other BD players.
And again, why do you have to post the same thing 1000 times? Where does the hate come from?
I just think everyone needs to relax... We are a huge minority and the companys are not trying to cater to us... Its nice that they get around and update things for us through firmware but almost all the people buying these players could care less about advanced audio codecs... Most will not even be able to play them or care about playing them...
If u don't like it fine don't buy it but why do we have to have 5 different threads about this daily... We all get that it came up short on being a great product but GIVE IT A REST....
optivity 12-30-07, 02:54 PM And again, why do you have to post the same thing 1000 times?Maybe the box my BD-UP5000 came in was kicked around more during shipping because this player sure seemed like a hunk of junk to me.

Maybe you don't know how to set it up properly.
ChicagoTC 12-30-07, 03:38 PM Maybe the box my BD-UP5000 came in was kicked around more during shipping because this player sure seemed like a hunk of junk to me.
That must be the case as mine has played every disk I've thrown at it.

Chipsets made by Broadcom has a pretty bad reputation for being buggy among open source developers writing device drivers. I would assume that LG/Samsung has hardware specification, which open source developers do not have, and still they have problems. Not surprising, really.
optivity 12-30-07, 04:17 PM Maybe you don't know how to set it up properly.Extremely doubtful dude... 30 years of hands-on experience working with IT related platforms/applications/networks and seven years of being a hobbiest since I bought my 1st HDTV... qualifies me to connect an HDMI cable between two boxes.
Currently more than 40% of the respondents to the non-scientific poll on the Who Is Keeping Or Who Is Returning Their Samsung 5000? (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=962140) thread are contemplating or have already returned their BD-UP5000, which IMO is a ridiculously high consumer dissatisfaction rate for any $800 DVD player.
But I wish you the best of luck with yours... and the same thing goes for the rest of those wishful thinkers who are keeping theirs.

It's ineteresting how you read things. When I look at that poll, I see 14% have returned it, 60% are keeping it and the remaining 26% that you see as returning also, I see that they may also be keeping it. Funny how people see things differently when they want to.

Agreed!:)
I'm part of the 26%, but am PROBABLY keeping it - I am hoping for positive info w/regard to a FW update in the next 30 days or so. I think that they will fix the audio issues, and I haven't seen the video issues others complain about.
I think I'LL interpret the poll as on 14 % returning it, 86% keeping.:D
The way i see that survey is it's a very bias survey because anyone that comes on this site is extremists when it comes to AV equipment and wants the thing to do everything possible right away... I imagine if u took a survey of everyone buying the 5000 you'd have a much higher percent of people keeping it...
I mean would you rather have a dual format player now that will be upgrade or have them wait until later in jan to release it when the firmware is upgraded... And don't keep saying maybe they will upgrade because they have updated all there other players so i don't see why this one would be any different...

OK then. Let's git her goin'. Write to the manufacturers and demand what you want. Enough letters and they will deliver.

Um, LG and Samsung. I really shouldn't have to say any more than that, but I figure explaining now is easier than coming back to a dead-end thread:
You really thought these were going to be the high-end offerings? Patience, grasshopper. Or buy 2 machines.
But, even with 2 machines you face many of the same problems - notably BluRay discs failing to play until the next firmware release. Perhaps I have been lucky, but my 5000 so far has played every disc I fed it flawlessly! Actual experience, not wishful thinking!

Just a word to the wise. Since you say you are hoping for FW updates to fix it. Go read the 1200 owners thread in the Blu-ray section.
We are still waiting for a FW update to fix movies released almost 2 months ago.

Sadly (for the 1200 owners), a firmware update for the 5000 might actually come out BEFORE an update for the 1200. Companies typically support their latest player more aggressively than their prior models, and since the 5000 is the flagship model, they might be more inclined to get it updated more quickly.
I'm still incredibly irritated at all the fancy-schmancy whistles and bells that they're shoving into the new standards. I was FINE with the level of interactivity and features of the standard DVD format -- I just wanted the higher quality image and sound. If it weren't for all the OTHER features of these players (games, interactivity, etc. etc.), I bet that everything would be working MUCH better as far as compatibility goes. I couldn't care less about games and so forth, but I definitely care when I get video stutters or audio dropouts, not to mention when a disc just doesn't play at all.

So is the Broadcom hardware the limiting factor? For example, I wonder if a firmware update would even be able to increase the Dolby TrueHD output from the current 2-channel limit?
What if that functionality in the chip is already maxed out?

That would certainly suck for all involved who require lossless audio. Maybe we should flood Broadcom's phone lines and demand some resolution here. :o

I'm glad I returned my sub-par BD-UP5000 & got my money back.

Hi ALL,
I'm incredibly irritated too!! I 100% realize that modern day Hi Def players will NOT be fully functional out of the box. However, there is a reasonable expatation that a fair percentage of the main features should be working. I also realize the mess created by all these "advanced" features may make a just released disk possibly un-playable until a firmware update. But what's really bothering me is that some of the reported disks that do not play on some 5000's do play on others. If it was a FW problem and we all have the same FW then ALL 5000's should behave the same.
I have Fantastic Four - ROTSS and I tried all sorts of things (power off, play right after another Blu Ray that works, etc.) and nothing I did can make it play. But again other 5000's have no probem playing. What if the FW finally comes out and it still does not play. I was one of the ones that called Sammy tech support and I was NOT impressed with them. Am I willing to gamble a $800 unit on a possible FW update?
Also on the audio front. I had decided that when I upgrade to a Hi Def player I would also upgrade my AVR to the Onkyo 705 which CAN decode all of the advanced audio formats. If Sammy would make some kind of statement that these will be fixed soon or some posting on their web site then I would feel better.
I voted in the poll as not sure if I'm going to keep it or not. I REALLY REALLY WANT to keep it, but unless there is some communication from Sammy and soon, I must reluctantly return it and I will then go with the BD30/A-35 combo!

Excellent post. My sentiments exactly. I just wanted Superbit titles in HD. Now, there is so much crap thrown into both HD formats that every new title is hit or miss. What a shame. You can only put so much blame on Samsung for the problems with the BD-UP5000s. At least they are trying.
vinnie97 12-31-07, 10:17 PM Gerryex, I'm one of those who had zero problems with FF-RotSS. I'd recommend anyone who has nonplayable titles where there hasn't been a consensus on failed playback (RoTSS, LFoDH namely) to definitely return their players...and if you can be bothered, get a replacement when they become available.
LowTech1 01-02-08, 11:53 AM For all of you who think your going to get a firmware for this thing that fixes everything, dream on.. They will put one out,and you will get a few movie fixed and maybe DD true HD,maybe.. I bet you won't get DTS-MA.. Watch and see,the people that own them now, will jusitfy their purchase, and that's fine..I would never be happy unless this thing does lossless audio.I'm glad some of you are happy with next gen video and last gen audio..Samsung could at least let us know on their website that they are indeed working on an update, what's in it and when. They don't want to say anything because it will be about June before we see anything..If it does come out this month and fixes everything,I'll eat crow!
vinnie97 01-02-08, 08:22 PM Dolby Digital Plus is last gen audio? Who knew!
LowTech1 01-03-08, 12:24 PM Who said DD plus was last gen? Quote the person..
vinnie97 01-03-08, 05:54 PM You seemed to imply it. Of course, I was under the impression the 5000 supports DD+ but I may be incorrect on that assumption!
