I recently bought this switch as I wanted a 4x1 switch with remote (so it would be easy to program my Harmony) and it was the only one in stock at the time:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=4066&seq=1&format=2

The problem is the only way I can get the switch to go to the correct input for my HD-DVD player is by making my Harmony remote delay for 20 seconds while the DVD player boots up as it does not emit a signal until those 20 seconds have passed...it seems the reason my switch won't go to the correct input is because my particular model of switch only allows you to switch to an input that has an active device...does this sound correct? Are there other switches that allow you to change to an input that does not have an active device present? My component switch lets me so I thought it was an HDMI thing in general but now I am wondering if it is the specific switch I got...

If I am right about this what would you guys recommend I replace it with? There appears to be a new revision of the other 4x1 switch coming 1/14/08 but since I ordered the wrong switch this time I don't trust myself anymore...

I picked up the Oppo HM-31 3x1 switch from Amazon for $99 - a bit more than the MonoPrice and (1) less input, but I have yet to have an issue with it not going to the correct input. I am using a Harmony 720 to control it and have my Toshiba A20 connected to input (1); PS3 to input (2); and Comcast DVR to input (3). The cool thing about the Oppo is that it is has auto-switching and a device such as my DVR, which is always sending out a signal, doesn't confuse it. Can't recommend it enough.

I think the difference between yours and mine is this (a review of yours that I found):

"Once your components are connected and turned on, the HM-31 will show red lights on the front panel This is normal. A red light means that an HDMI signal is ready on that port. A blue light means that an HDMI signal is active and that particular HMDI source has been selected. Blinking blue means that a port/source has been selected but that no signal is detected by the HM-31."

That means to me that even though yours auto-switches you can also manually switch to it even if there isn't a source...mine can't...

Can you do me a favor and see if when you turn on your A20 and switch to its input if the light blinks blue at first or if it is solid blue? It's also possible that the A20 boots up differently than the A3...even when my A3 is connected directly to my tv, it says "no signal" for about 15 seconds...

Yes I can switch to an input w/o a device being on and the A20 takes a good while to startup too. Does your switch have an input order preference?

i have both the oppo switch and an older 3x1 monoprice switch. i had to get the oppo switch because the monoprice switch would not work with the oppo hd-981 dvd player. supposedly the monoprice switch isnt hdcp complaint. what a waste of $65. anyways, as far as comparing the 2 switches, the oppo definetly has an advantage because it autosenses. i have a dish hd 622 receiver, toshiba A2 hddvd, and panasonic bd30 bluray hooked up to the switch connected to an onkyo 605 receiver. im using a logitech harmony 550 and i havent hadnt any issues at all with changing back and forth between devices. the oppo switch works with the harmony remotes so make sure you program the remote properly. you should be able to set some remote delay times manually.
but get this, the oppo 981 dvd player i have doesnt work right with the oppo switch. when i switch to the dvd player, only video comes through, i have to unplug and replug the hdmi cable to get it to work. so of course i just ran the dvd player straight to the receiver.

I don't know what you mean other than the documentation states that any "always-on" devices like satellite receivers should be on the lower inputs which is the way I have it...for kicks I put the A3 on a lower input than my D* HR-20 but it didn't make any difference...it appears the problem with this switch is that it autosenses but does NOT allow for manual input changes...it's all auto...the autosensing is great but how can you not be able to manually change inputs if you want to? I'd like to return this one and get another 4x1 switch from monoprice but they have discontinued all of them...a new one is coming but not for another two weeks...what a headache...
