View Full Version : how many dead pixels is considered "acceptable"?
JayhawkCWE 12-30-07, 04:17 PM i just got a panasonic 42" 700u 1080p plasma. i freakin' love it, the picture is awesome, black levels are phenomenal, uniformity is great, etc...
but there are two dead pixels stuck on a magenta looking color. i can't see them when i'm further than two feet away, so i'm not going to take it back or anything like that, i'm just wondering what the acceptable amount of dead pixels per display is?
optivity 12-30-07, 04:32 PM This is an individual decision. Personally having paid $5400 for a 50PX50U and $7750 for a PRO-150FD... not (1) single de d/stuck pixel is acceptable for me although the manufacturer will tell you this is normal with PDP display technology.
This is why I buy such items from a B&M retail store, if I discover any significant problems right out-of-the-box (e.g. a BD-UP5000 that would not play the first Blu-ray disc I tried) then back it goes.

I must agree here, I purchased a Pioneer 5080 & love it to death! I have one Magenta colored pixel that's acting up. I bought it on 12/19 & took delivery on 12/25 & I going to give it a chance to right itself, if it doesn't.....back it goes! I'm not paying $2000+ dollars for a stuck pixel! That's why B&M stores rock! Yes...You pay a tad more, but you can return w/o any questions!
Krynn007 12-30-07, 11:43 PM I'm new to the whole new Plasma and LCD TV. I haven't recieved my 5080 yet. Anyway I've been trying to find information and came across this.
Not sure if this will help or not, but thought I'd point it out

Awesome! Nice job! I am going to post this within a thread!

hawdoni 12-31-07, 09:21 AM creemail, I've seen a few threads in which you recommended the newpoint 204220 suppressor. Just wondering how it performs? Does it have a dedicated block for high current draw items such as a rx or powered sub? I like the price, thanks for the tip, 1/3 the price of a panamax seems worth a shot, as long as it can condition and filter the line and provide ample protection.
try jscreenfix.com I have used it to fix a stuck pixel on my plasma. it works!
I purchased my 42pz700u through crutchfield. After getting it home for about a week I noted 5+ dead/stuck pixels. I called Panasonic asking what I could do to fix it. The rep I had said they normally don't cover dead/stuck pixels but since I had just recently purchased the TV he felt bad for me have a faulty product so soon. He set me up with a local repair shop who order the part and replaced the panel under full Panasonic warranty. Just got it back a few days ago and its beautiful, not one single stuck/dead pixel.

That is great to hear. Panasonic is a great company with a reputation driven around service. I love their attitude on satisfying the customer! Other companies would try to tell you to live with it.

optivity 01-30-08, 07:39 AM how many dead pixels is considered "acceptable"? When it comes to spending my money... only a display with 0 dead pixels is acceptable to me.
This is why I buy locally from a B&M retail store:
$5400 for a TH-50PX50U from CC during May 05'
$7750 for a PRO-150FD from Hippo's during September 07'
I do not fix "new," equipment, so if there are any "significant" problems right out of the box (e.g. Samsung's ill-fated BD-UP5000) back to the store it goes.

I'll second that. I use it on my Pioneer 5080 that had one intermittent stuck pixel. Use Jsceenfix Deluxe & within 40 minutes it was gone & hasn't returned! Great stuff.

Most electronic items have something wrong with it if you know it or not. There is just too much going on for "perfect" to exist. Take something like the Intel C2D, there is a huge document listing all the bugs that are basically hidden with BIOS or software updates. I'd rather just have someone come out to "fix" minor issues because you can always get a much worse set next time around. You can't fix dead pixels but I have no problem asking them to come out to tweak the voltage or replace a simple logic board. Thats what warranty is for. I'd rather have that than a "perfect" set out of the box that decides to not work a day after the warranty expires ;)
joemama127 01-30-08, 11:45 AM Most lcd/plasma manufacturers consider 4-5 dead pixels that are not grouped together to be acceptable....of course consumers may have a different number in mind that starts with "0". Personally, both of my desktop lcd's (Dell, NEC) and one of my 3 plasmas have dead or stuck pixels but none of them bother me to the point where that was reason enough to do an exchange.

I purchased the 50pz750u, finally got it and noticed a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. Then when the screen goes to blue , 5-6 pixels flicker. So I called Panasonic up and told them about my problem, they put me in touch with a repair shop. The repair shop ordered me a new panel to replace this one. Told me the tv would be gone for 2 weeks :( , but offered me a loaner Tv in the mean time. :D My Tv goes out this Friday to get fixed. I'll post up the end results, when all is said and done. So far, Im very pleased that Panasonic is going to rectify the situation at hand.

I heard the above works good...you can also try playing an animated movie overnight - many people have had good results with "the Incredibles" at "unsticking" pixels.
In my experience I got a Pio 5010 from BB, after 2 days i found 1 dead pixel -gave it a couple days to "fix" itself...it was stubburn and so was I ;) ...exchanged it for another 5010, NO dead pixels. That's why you pay that LITTLE extra at the B&M.. :)
