Hello all,

I'd like to get some opinions from those on this board.

I can purchase a brand new JVC HD-1 for roughly $5K (this includes installation labor) or get a Sony VW60 for roughly $3K.

My question is this, is the JVC worth a $2K price premium? The HD-2 is out of my price range, but I have read nothing but good things about the HD-1.

Thanks!

Can you PM me and tell me where you found the VW60 for 3K...? I'd love to find one for that price, particularly if its an authorized dealer.

Someone on another board said they found one for $2960 shipped, but didn't mention from where.

Anyway, I have seen the VW60 in action and it is a gorgeous picture. But from what I hear the RS1 and RS2 are unequaled.

I'm actually buying it directly from Sony as a part of an EPP program that they have. I'm just wondering if I should just take the Sony and the discount, or pay for the difference and get the JVC.

Thanks!

If you read through the VW60 sticky about the Greg Rogers review you'll find that he, and quite a few others, found the Black Pearl to be about on a par with the HD1, with pluses and minuses for each.

For $2K difference I would definitely get the Sony.

However, you can get the JVC for a lot cheaper from our forum sponsors at AVScience.

I know it's only in Italian, but you can find a lot of screenshots here, representing the Cineversum Black Wing II (aka JVC HD1) and the Sony VPL-VW60:

Please remember that the BWII is above and the Sony is below. Happy reading!

Read this: http://www.projectorreviews.com/sony/vpl-vw60/imagequality.php

Jump to the section "Sony VPL-VW60 Projector Overall Picture Quality", which compares the VW60 to his JVC.

What I've found is that IRIS still needs to be improved...
Take a look at these graphs, that refer to the Sony:

I don't think you can refer to them as "perfectly uniform"... and this is the effect of the DI!

P1...P5 are 5 points where I took the levels, obviously.

its a tough call as both are great projectors. I have the HD1 (RS1) and i love the native CR and great brightness with a great overall image.
only complaint is slightly bright corners and the colour push, mostly with green.
As an overall package its superb though not perfect.

Native contrast (JVC) and placement flexibility (vertical and horizontal) wins.
But Sony has closed the gap and many are very happy. If this is your first pj, you'll be pleased with either one.

Things have really moved in this area the last two years. Big bang for the buck.

I'd definitely save the 2Gs and get the Black Pearl. Don't forget you also get the panel alignment adjusting for convergence with the VW60. Both will get the job done but if you tweak the Black Pearl (see the thread) you will be very happy with the results. :)

A quick question about the VW60 to anyone who can provide.

Any new unit I buy, I would like to shelf mount for a month or so while I make some changes. Looking at the BP manual, there is only provision for lens shift in one direction off the lens axis and if I am to displace the image *below* the lens axis I will have to invert the unit as though it was ceiling mounted. Can I assume this is correct i.e. there is no provision for off axis adjustment above *and* below screen centre?

I auditioned the RS2 and VW60 in my room and stayed with the RS2. The black level between the 2 is close with a slight edge going to the RS2. Where the VW60 really falls down is the lack of native contrast. The RS2 just has more dynamic range and produces a more satisfying picture over the entire APL range. The lack of native contrast was really apparent on the VW60 on mid to bright APL stuff. Coming from CRT this was very important to me. In all honesty if the VW60 was my only choice I would have stayed with my G70 for another few years.

Quite frankly though whichever one you get you will be more than happy with... :)

I am debating between these two projectors. Any input from recent owners of either products would be appreciated.

TIA.

If you can hold off for a few months you should look into the JVC RS20 which will probably smoke both the HD1 and Black Pearl. Give Jason Turk a ring and see what he can sell it to you for. You might be surprised.

I had the VW60 and now the RS1. The VW60 is very nice but the RS1's native contrast shows. The VW60 is quieter, has better color, and has better lens control (remote). I was happy with both but you have to weigh your pros and cons.

I would first off not get the HD1...get the RS1X. There are some nice upgrades as well as better support that the HD1 isn't getting. Secondly, I'd not get the RS1X and get the RS10 when it ships. Cheaper yet.

Oh, $5k is so so for the HD1, but depends on what all needs to be done for the installation (you said it was included).

Where did you see the incredible Sony EPP price? I just logged in to my Sony EPP and it shows the MSRP of $5k all the way to checkout.
