So, I got my PS3 for Christmas but traded in Spiderman 3 and other movies for some games. My God, video games have advanced in a few years, huh?

Anyhoo, I got my first BluRay movies today: Casino Royale, Night at the Museum and Ratatouille. I skimmed through all of them and they all look amazing. I haven't seen much else, so I won't compare BluRay to HD DVD quite yet. This week is gonna be HD heaven, I'm getting about 12 from Amazon and a bunch more from BB, but as for tonight...

I have chosen Casino Royale to be my first BluRay movie! My roommate's never seen it and I only saw it once. This is gonna be...well...gosh, it's gonna be just swell. Who needs a movie theater?

Those are all highly entertaining movies and they look great too. I would also suggest Live free die hard, The pirates of the carribbean an Harry potter flicks too.....

Congrats on turning purple! The best way to go, in my opinion.

Well, you'll soon find as a purple supporter, that Blu-Ray and HD DVD are VERY similar in terms of PQ. Both formats have movies that look absolutely incredible (BD: Ratatouille, HD: Shrek 3) and absolutely horrible (BD: Dirty Dancing, HD: In Good Company).

Blu-ray really shines when you get to audio. The majority are lossless or PCM... many in 24 bit.

HD is HD....all wonderful PQ either in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD...no need to compare as you'll find some bad transfer and some good transfer on both side. Enjoy it...and congratulation with the Blu-Ray.

I just went Blu recently, after having HD DVD for a year now. I got 5 free movies at Best Buy, and they all looked great. Close Encounters, Halloween, Remember the Titans, The Descent and Ratatouille. It's great being purple, you can see EVERYTHING! Each format is pretty similar in quality, good and bad. If you can get good deals, purple is the way to go! Enjoy your new toy! :)

Great choice on Casino Royale as your first Blu experience. It was also our first back in April and we were hooked. Just make sure you're comfortable using the controller as the remote. I wasn't and my wife kept getting pissed because I'd hit the wrong button by mistake. :o

I bought Nacho Libre for my first Blu-Ray back in January or February.

Congrats....

I also have both formats, and love it. Thoroughly enjoy all the movies I get on both.

I am nothing more than pleased with blu-ray. We just watched POTC: AWE and watched Live Free or Die Hard the other night. Picture and sound was stunning. I'm glad I gave HD a second try. My first round was a few weeks ago with a Toshiba A3. Was not impressed and it went back. Nothing against HD-DVD at all. But there is only 3 or 4 movies in their whole catalog that I even want to watch in HD.

Just curious why you traded in Spidey...it's a great title to show off your system. Not a spiderman fan?

My wife did not watch Live Free or Die Hard at the theater. I watched it when she was out of town. I loved the movie and got it at BB two days ago. We have a PS3 and I was disappointed that Sony has still not released DTS-HD-Ma decoding. However, the sound and video are just awesome. I have a H/K AVR 745 receiver with Klipsch Reference series speakers and eD 350 sub woofer. The movie just rocked. It has become my wife's favorite Bruce Willis movie!!!

So are you still with us or did that movie send you back to DVD?

Oh there's much worse looking titles than those two, lol. I personally didn't think they looked bad. Now the original Full Metal Jacket release was a terrible looking disc.

I got the Spiderman trilogy. I didn't want two Spiderman 3's.

Well, my buddy came over that night and we all tend to talk a lot and dick around so I didn't want to have Casino Royale on. We're gonna watch it tonight. Can't wait!

I just ordered the first three Die Hards and the Departed on Amazon, hopefully those'll be here relatively soon. I can't WAIT to watch the Die Hards. Those movies are some of the main reasons I wanted a BluRay player.

Now that I've seen more movies, I've come to the conclusion that there REALLY is no difference between the two systems, picture quality wise. I never cared more for one than the other, anyway, I never took sides. I always intended to get both systems. All that matters is the content. That's all that SHOULD matter. They should make combo units for 500 bucks-ish.

I do tend to prefer the blu-ray on the audio side (love those pcm tracks), but the video is the same.

What type of an audio set-up are you using?

About a 1 1/2 ago I bought an 50" Panny Plasma, got a nice surround sound setup (paradigm studios/denon 4306) and bought the first gen hd-dvd player. When the ps3 came out, I bought that on launch day. Ever since then my trips to the movie theater has declined SIGNIFICANTLY. I believe that I may have only gone to the movies 3 times in 2007 (spidey 3, ratatouille, transformers). Prior to my system upgrade, I used to go to the movies every weekend.

The way I look at it, each blu-ray/hd-dvd costs about 19.99-27.95 on amazon. It costs my wife and I about $20 bucks to go to the movies so I'd rather just own the movie. And when the movie is more than $20, I view it as me paying a premium to not have to deal with sticky floors, people talking, and cell phones; a premium well worth it.

I remember my first time...

...then there was the first time I watched blu ray.

My first film was Casino Royale as well, then Spider-Man 3. I miss my surround sound setup, but the 55" hdtv was good enough for now. Gotta save up and get an Onyko 705 and some nice speakers. Man now my whole family is loving HD.

Casino Royale was my first as well. Great movie. I'm looking forward to Bond 22.

I have a Yamaha HTR-5930 surround system. My Philips Blu-ray player is hooked up via digital coax, and my Toshiba HDA2 via Toslink optical. The Dolby TruHD, when available, gives the system quite a boost on my HDDVD's, but the PCM, when available, on the Blu's will blow the windows off (watch Live Free or Die Hard, you'll see what I mean.)

interesting that you should think that, because the way you have it set up, you are getting neither truehd from the a2 nor pcm from the philips...

Jason, I feel exactly the same way. I used to be a movie theater fanatic. I'd see movies every week, at least once, for years and years! But as the years progressed, the worse the experience got.

I now go to the movies about once a month, if that. Home theater is where it's at, and with the quick turn around, when a movie comes out, I just wait three months and bingo! It's on HD DVD or Bluray.

Go to a Muvico 21+ theater and you'll change your mind. ;)

My first experience was pretty bad actually, sitting 8 feet from a 32" 720p Sharp wasn't pretty. I watched Final Fantasy: Sprits Within first, wasn't impressed at all. Now that I upgraded to the Panasonic 42PZ700U (42" 1080p plasma) and watched Silent Hill, I was highly impressed, and that's a Tier 4 movie. I don't have a surround sound system either, i'll have to get one of those soon.

Couldn't agree more about Live Free or Die Hard *except* that Fox only gave us the PG-13 version on BD. They released an Unrated cut on DVD.

It's a great movie, but they won't get my BD $$$ until Bruce is able to speak "freely", in the manner to which we've all been accustomed.

Yea, the truhd track is sent through the dts signal and the pcm is only 2.0, so there is some loss, but I still notice a great difference...enough so I don't have to upgrade my receiver anytime soon.

Good catch, though.

I'm only 7 weeks into my BD experience. The first test was Fifth Element (remastered) for the first 3 chapters. Never going back that's for sure! I really think the most amazing addition re: BD discs is the lossless audio tracks. I already had a nice set of Boston VRM975 5.1 for speakers and upgraded my Denon 3801 to a 3808ci. Added the BD1400 player and man what a difference! I will watch a bad movie just to "hear it"!

The Blade Runner re-release is a sonic paradise..(not a bad movie either).
