View Full Version : Thoughts/Predictions for Pioneer 9Gs?

This new video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TJ3tnYnwS0&feature=user)of a 9 mm thin Pioneer screen speaks for itself. Pioneer has gotten the blacks down better than anyone with the Elite Kuros. I do not see them investing more money to make a Super Elite Kuro because no one has caught up yet to the Elite Kuro, and they'll just lose more money(they're already in deficit). These new models are either Pioneer's own OLEDs or a new type of plasma.

Pioneer looked at the upcoming OLED technology, which is sure to take over the market with 1 million contrast ratio and a very thin structure. The only way to counter it and stay in the business was to make a similar thin flat screen, probably with similar contrast ratio. This is sure to compete with OLEDs because that's Pioneer's only choice. Companies like Sony seem to have abandoned LCDs to move onto OLED. Still, Pioneer must keep these models within the price range of the general public if it can. I was going to wait to buy a TV, but I guess it's good to wait to see if Pioneer can pull off another generation of the best quality sets on the market. When will we see them? Early 2009?

If you read the video description from bbcworldnews:"Electronics maker Pioneer has unveiled what it says is the world's thinnest TV at only 9mm thick."

I was thinking of getting a 5080, but I'm going to see what Pioneer is bringing next. I was planning on getting the TV in Mid-February or so, but I hope that Pioneer releases it soon. I don't want to wait too long again; I'm hoping for summer maybe, but that's doubtful.

I thought you were buying a Samsung 58" based upon your posts.

If it drops to $3000, then I would get it. I asked numerous stores and they told me that the price on the Samsung was already too low at $3600. I'm only buying in store so that's why this is a dilemna. I said 50"=5080, 58"=5884 if the price is good.

You could probably find about 50 threads he posted in saying just that

I highly doubt a ultra thin display will be consumer ready by this summer and if so, it will not be anywhere near a competitive price.

So you mean that we can look forward to another year of you debating your decision and asking the same questions daily?

Go easy on the guy - he's dropping a lot of cash on a T.V set and just wants his money's worth. I'm in the same boat he is and it's a pretty tough decision.

Aside from that, Sephiroth I suggest going for the 5080 first, if that's too small then you can return it for the 5884, which should make up in PQ with size and 1080p. That's exactly what I'm doing. As for 9th gen Pio's - I don't see them being affordable (or at least in your price range) til' mid '09 or later even. OLED still has a long way to go as well..At least that's how I see it...But anyway, hope that helps.

I would go the opposite route. buy the big one and make sure that it isn't too big. If not, keep that and don't downgrade. I will say this, very few of my clients that get sets from me ever go to a smaller size, they always upgrade or tell me 6 months later they wish they had gotten the larger model (when they don't have some major space constraint like a WAF cabinet etc)

Nah that's not my issue with his posts. I'm bothered that he too frequently tosses advice out to others in the same position. Forming opinions based on other people's opinions, then dishing out advice to others as if it's based on experience.

Either way's fine.:D

I agree to a point, he does tend to come off as an expert judge of PQ when he can't decide himself what set to go with. I have read way to many "why buy that when you can buy the 58" samsung?" replys. Oh well, enough personal junk, he's just trying to figure it all out, its just the internet after all! ;)

Yeah, I guess I disagree with giving out advice based on which way the wind's blowing today... But at the same time not being confident enough to pull the trigger yourself.

To me you need to be really careful how you present the advice, and I don't see that.

Tricky issue, that. I try to answer a question occasionally - and I'm another long time forum member who hasn't bought yet. My attitude is that if I'm fairly certain of an answer from my reading here (which admittedly, is rare; I still don't know a lot), I'll share it. To me, it's an effort to pay back the forum for all it gives me and give the people who have to answer the same questions daily a break.

I think we're all doing our best to use the forum to learn and share what we've learned when we can. I like the idea of everybody cutting each other a little slack.

Happy New Year, AVSers!
