I'm finishing the basement for a mixed TV room, play room for the kids and home office. We were trying to keep the TV away from under the kids rooms but to maximize our space we need to place it under one of their bedrooms.

This will not be a dedicated HTR but a Family room with a surround system. I won't be drywalling the ceiling but plan on using a drop system instead, I have access to Armstrong tiles from my local Lowes which state that they are "sound absorbing" tiles.

We are not planning on rocking the house down with the SS once the kids are in bed but would like to be able to enjoy a late night movie at low-regular levels without disturbing those sleeping upstairs.

I have 2x10 joists that I plan on filling with insulation to try and damper the sound, I'm hoping that this with the ceiling tiles will get the job done.

Anyone with suggestions please feel free to reply

Thanks in advance

tick - a lot of folks who put home recording studios in their basements use a method that might work for you. Before you put the insulation in between the joists, do two layers of drywall with green glue. They also use something called backer rod between the sides of the drywall and the joists.

The link below is a google search of another forum for threads that talk about the backer rod.

Maybe this thread will help too...
