View Full Version : New projector in 6k to 8k range???
m1fuller68 12-31-07, 05:20 PM Hi all,
I plan on buying a new projector after CES 08'. I have a few questions.
1. What is the best on in the 6k to 8k range?
80% of my viewing is movies with HD DVD and Blu-ray
10% xbox 360
10% Hi Def sports, shows etc via D*Tv
2. I am going with a 100" 16 x 9 screen...
3. We will be sitting 14' from the screen
4. I heard that if I go with the Sony VW60, Stewart filmscreen makes a specific screen for the sony. Anyone heard this?
4a. Must be able to do 24p
5. All thoughts appreciated...
I know that (1) is basically the questions and the rest are statements. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
One thing I would like is a bright PJ. I saw Runco's new single DLP with HD Sports and it was fantastic but 17k is a little steep.
My equipment:
Integra 9.8
Emotvia MPS-1
Toshiba HD DVD 35
Panasonic DMP30
Xbox 360 elite
D*tv HR21
Wii
Speakers,
Focal in 7.1
JL Fathom 113
Thanks,
M1

1st choice Sharp 20000 dlp ( I am biased because I own one ).:D
2nd choice Jvc RS1-2 lcos ( best alternative for dlp sensitivity ).:(
Do not choose brightness over performance.
Personally I would pick the RS2 over the Sharp. It streets for much less than the MSRP and throws a great picture. I had it side by side with a VW60 in my theater and it walked all over the Sony due to the much higher native contrast ratio.
I second the RS2 recommendation. I moved to it from a Sony VW50 (Pearl) and, while I give the Sony props for throwing such a great picture at a low price, there is no comparison between it and the RS2, mainly due to the deeper blacks. The better contrast just enables the RS2 image to pop. And no worries about rainbows.
/edit: don't think the RS2 will do 24p...at least mine did not like it when I fed it that from the Lumagen HDP...perhaps some other owner can comment on their experience. My second choice to the RS2 was the VW-60.

Phil Olson 12-31-07, 08:57 PM I'd vote for the RS2 as well since I just bought one. :)
Of course it's still on the UPS truck! :D
m1fuller68 12-31-07, 11:41 PM Thanks to everyone who responded....looks like the RS-2 is the obvious choice. Does it do 24p? If not, can I get the VP50 Pro to do this for me?
Someone, please post some xbox 360 shots...
Thanks again...

Yes.

I'd agree about the RS2 because of the smallish size of screen you're going with. I'd like to upgrade to an RS2 from my RS1 for the contrast but I don't think it will throw enough light for 159" screen like the RS1. I couldn't bring myself to buy the Sharp on personal grounds because it's made in China, I've had nothing but bad luck with virtually everything made in China over the years. Also I see RBE's pretty clearly.
I've discovered the truth behind the rainbow effect. Has anyone seen the John Carpenter movie, They Live? Need I say more? Some of us don't need the glasses to see the truth! Yes it had some bad acting but I like his movies.
What gain screen do you need for the RS2? I currently have a humble HD78DC3 going to a 96" Da-Mat 1.0.
frank456 01-01-08, 12:41 AM A co-worker of mine uses a stewart studiotek 130 with his brand new RS2 and says it looks just fine.
Yes, the RS2 does 24p. I'm feeding mine 24p from both a PS3 and a Toshiba HD-A30.
Is the 24p mode on the RS2 artifact-free and smoother / stutter free (compared to 60p)? i.e. does it look better than 1080p60 with an appropriate film based source?
AVSRichard 01-01-08, 03:53 PM Don't forget to look at the Marantz VP15S1 as well.
Richard
frank456 01-01-08, 06:21 PM The marantz is a first class model for sure.
Mike N Ike 01-01-08, 06:43 PM Yes it is. And AVS had a holiday special on the VP15S1 that was VERY attractive. May still be in effect.

I think you would be happy with either or... :)

joerod, you sure go through a bunch of equipment. I see you running a VW200 as of 6 p.m. today, Jan. 1, 2008. Tomorrow is another day however ...
Have you tried JVC PJ's? I did see you ran a VW60 for a time too.
m1fuller68 01-01-08, 07:32 PM After so many great suggestions, I am now interested in the Marantz. Anyone here on the AVS Powerbuy with AV? If so, please pm me.
This will be my first projector and I'm getting a little over whelmed with so many choices. For example, Marantz, JVC, Infocus, Sony...all within similar price range.

Marantz is out of your budget. Sim2 is beyond that!
I would say you would be happy with JVC or Sony. I am not even pushing a single chip DLP even though I use one. 8 hours Sunday football can cause eye strain even on the rainbow "insensitive" like me.
If I would upgrade today I would go with JVC RS2. I am kind of hoping NECSEL based front PJ's come onto the scene soon. A 1440p, NECSEL based DC4 DLP would be super fast refresh (beyond 120Hz) and have 200% NSTC color space with no moving parts (color wheel) ... That PJ would last me at least 3 years.

Actually, the Marantz is not out of your budget. I am in a similar position and I am wrestling between the Marantz 15s1, the JVS RS2 or saving money and getting the Sony. It gets confusing reading the chat boards and there are few thorough reviews comparing the Marantz and the new JVC.

MSRP of Marantz is >$10k isn't it? Perhaps a heavily discounted unit can be found for $8k? I would not think so.
AVSRichard 01-01-08, 09:06 PM Pricing can be given if you call us for the Powerbuy. From us it's only given via phone.

VP15S1 MSRP is $9999. But you would be SHOCKED, SHOCKED, if you called AVS to get their powerbuy price.

frank456 01-01-08, 09:47 PM The power buy price combined with the marantz performance for the WOW image:eek: this model shows is worth it. There is something a good dlp projector has in the 'whole' viewing criteria that other current technologies do not have. My decision to go with the sharp 20000 came after reviewing an RS2 and have not regretted the decision. The lens quality is so good on the marantz that sharpness is unrivaled.
So with the shocking price, would you pick the Marantz or the RS2? And why? What are the relative strengths and short comings of each? I am in a light controlled room and replacing a Yamaha DPX 1000.
frank456 01-01-08, 11:15 PM The yamaha was one of the most highly rated 720p models ever produced. If 1080p is your criteria then switch to something else and if not then 'KEEP IT'. In IMO if you have any sensitivity to single chip dlp then the RS2 would be my choice without a doubt but if not then the marantz would be the decision.
The processing along with the world class lens assemblies on the sharp - marantz products is second to none. You will tire fast from the brightness advantages of the jvc when the picture quality on the marantz shows it's muscles. I do not own the marantz but do own a sharp 20000 which is a comparable model technology and feature wise. There is practicaly invisible video noise in the sharp marantz products which make the image smoother and sharper.
kevivoe 01-02-08, 08:47 AM The Marantz is still a single chip DMD? It is the same DMD as used on the cheaper BenQ W9000 the "unnamed" 1080p DMD, the DC2.5, not even DC3. I see Sim2 also has a 1080p PJ using this DMD.
Now might as well wait for DC4. I already own a DC2.5 1080p with power zoom, focus, lens shift and iris. I really like the power iris since I can close it down for night viewing. I have a Da-lite hi-power too so lumens is never an issue.
I will still investigate the 15S1 but it does not sound like a worthwhile upgrade for me. It also does not support 1080p/24fps as my W9000 does now ... according to literature I have read.
The W9000 is 1/3 the price but perhaps lower grade optics BUT 1080p/24fps support.
simonpaw 01-02-08, 11:34 AM The user guide for the 15S1 indicates it does support 1080/24p.
I was under the impression that the 15S1 uses a DC3 - seen references in the forum to this - the user guide doesn't get specific on this.
I'm on the list for the Holiday Special - I was extremely surprised at the price. Anyone who is even slightly interested in this projector really must give AVS a call.

BenQ also called this DMD DC3 at one time. I spoke with my contacts at TI and they told me marketing did not designate this cost reduced DMD panel. They simply refer to it as DLP DMD. It is the same physical size as a DC3 DMD but they may have left off the dark metal processing which blackens the gaps between mirrors. That is why the contrast ratio is slightly lower than the DC3 DMD. When I referred to TI that this is DC3 "light" they agreed.
The BenQ W9000 (which I own) has this DMD. It has all of the exact same features as the Marantz but admittedly may have a lower grade optics path. No big deal, my PJ is super sharp and very good performance.
My next upgrade has to be DC4. I don't think Sim2 or Marantz will get my money since they are premium priced for slightly better optics (my opinion). The W9000 is my 3rd DLP and the best yet. I may upgrade to a W20000 with DC4 but then it is only for a slightly better black level which is not that big of deal anyway ... at this level.
I'd much rather buy a 3 chip (DMD) DLP PJ with NECSEL light source. I don't like the color wheel (moving part) or the low life bulb. A 3 chip DLP with NECSEL light source would probably come it at 50,000:1 CR and have 600 lumens @ D65, enough for my needs. This is a future PJ by the way, not currently on the horizon.
Thanks for clarifying the 24p question on the RS2...looks like I need to play around with mine a little more.
The only reason I did not consider the Marantz (even after hereing the great price) was that it is still single DMD DLP and even with the multi-sgement fast color wheel speeds, I still see rainbows so DLP was not an option. Other than that, I have heard a lot of good reviews on it...never seen it myself.

hthillbilly 01-02-08, 05:52 PM looking in similar price range and rs2 has been recomended strongly by my installer. anyone seen the rs2 and vp15s1? i would greatly appreciate the input.
thanks
frank456 01-02-08, 06:14 PM Both projectors are first class machines. I would be happy with either model. Less than 5% of people have RBE sensitivity so the other 95% can demo both to see what they think. I will tell you right now that the sharpness and corner to corner color uniformity on the marantz is well....... no contest.;)
