View Full Version : Mits HC6000 vs RS1

Saving for an RS1, but the Mits has just come onto my radar and wanted to see what folks think of it vs the RS1.

I was lucky enough to have a forum member bring an RS1 over and I know that it 'works' for me and it is a worthwhile improvement over my InFocus IN76.

However, the fan noise, lack of a vga port and physical size on the RS1 are not optimal. I can live with all that, just not ideal.

Two areas I could use help are -

Contrast: Just from the specs, it seems like the main thing the RS1 has over the HC6000 is the higher contrast. I do most of my viewing at night in a 'partially' light controlled room, but I have off white walls, so I am not sure I would notice the difference in contrast much?

Brightness: Set around D65, the RS1 is brighter. However, I will be at 1.5 to 1.6 zoom. That is wide open on the Mits lens and closer to the mid range of the lens on the RS1. Given that a wide open lens passes more light, is it reasonable to think the Mits would actually be close to the RS1 in my environment? Again, I know the RS1 is bright enough on my DIY high gain screen, just don't know how it would compare to the Mits.

Although the Mits uses D6 panels, it seems to be a bit under appreciated vs. the AE2000 and the new Epson. Seems weird since, the street price on the Mits is coming down and both the optics and overall build quality by all reports are superior. (?)

ps - would love to see a review from Jason Turk on the Mits and any AVS staffers that want to PM or post on this, please do. :)

AVS has a review on their website.

I am again thinking about the RS-1 instead of the Mits HC6000.

A review of the HC6000? I don't see it, only a review of the HC5000... ?

Here is what I was referring to.

Actually it is from avforums not avsforums.

Not exactly the same thing but I did move from an HC5000 to the RS1. Frankly the most annoying thing abt the HC5000 was the auto iris in action. If the HC6000 fixed that, I'd probably be less likely to trade up.

That said, I am very very glad to have made that switch. My comparisons are against the HC5000, so yr mileage may vary.

Fan noise has gotten a bit louder with age. Maybe cos I never cleaned the filters. But the HC5000 did run a lot hotter and still had issues with dust blobs.

Lack of VGA port is a downer, but what do u need it for?

Hell! YES!! There is a difference. Watch Sin City.. or Fifth Element.

First time I powered up Sin City on the RS1, I felt *shudders*

From the same projection distance on the HC5000 and the RS1, RS1 is noticeably brighter. Has started dimming a little but nowhere near as annoying as the auto iris on the HC5k

That's cos the new D7 panels are supposed to be a quantum leap from the D6.

The HC6000 is what the 5000 should have been in the first place!

Thanks for the reply! Let me start by saying that I think the RS1 has better over all PQ. Just trying to quantify the difference in my environment. :)

Supposedly they have.

Linux HTPC. I might by able to run DVI to HDMI for this, but it would require some fiddling and at the end of the day, I have found VGA is better for text.

So one of the main improvements on the HC6000 is the improved contrast. From what I have read, it is approaching the point where other factors, like my white walls, may render the difference between the HC6000 and RS1 a mute point. (?)

Not sure about this. Some folks have speculated that the D7 panels are only an improvement in very fast pans. Would love more info on this though.

Have they updated the panels?

White walls will affect your ANSI contrast, which the RS1 isn't particularly good at anyway. Absolute on/off will be OK as the white walls aren't reflecting much when there are dark scenes.

I had the same concerns and this is how it was explained to me.
