Hey guys,
I want to hook up my LCD and my 360 to my Onkyo receiver, but I only have one optical in. I know that there is a splitter that will acomplish this, but was told that if two sources at the same time was coming in that it may cause a problem.Would this be the same in my case? Thanks

Your receiver only has one optical in? You need a switch, not a splitter

Glad I asked. You talking about something like this?http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2946&seq=1&format=2

Looking into maybe an auto switching one, costs more, but may be worth it.Would the tv and 360 be fine with that setup? If not,I may get that one, heck it's not like it costs a fortune.

I have that same switch. Works great. I have all my stuff in the other room so switching does suck but now the xbox 360 plays dixv i mainly use that.

I'm using that so my PS3 and Toshiba HD-A35 can share one optical IN on my H/K AVR and it works fine. The Monoprice description says it won't work that way but it does fine and there's no switching involved. Plus it's only $5.95.

I have that too. It will work but only under the condition that you have to turn the other device off. In my case my dish box sent optical signal out all the time and it didn't work either.

Does this work with items that shutdown in a "Standby" mode like a PS3 and a HD-DVD player or do you have to unplug them also?

Mine works fine with my PS3 and Toshiba HD-A35 hd-dvd player. I don't have to unplug whatever one is in standby mode while using the other.

I'm not sure what exactly would happen if BOTH were on at the same time though - for all I know a black hole could spring forth and swallow up my entire block. :)

Thanks for the help everyone.I have one more question. My receiver will only have the LCD and 360 hooked to the switcher. If I am reading right, when I turn the switch to the 360 optical, then that will automatically play the sounds through the receiver? So say I have my 360 on and the switch is switched to the Tv,I would hear the sound from the tv,not the 360??

Interesting.I have been told that it wouldn't work also.So you don't have any problems running your setup this way? The thing I was wondering about is...when the tv is on and the 360 is on at the same time, would the 360 take over the sounds or would it be fighting with the sound from the tv.Hmmm, did that even make sense???:p

I should have read the reviews.Alot of people are using this for the very same purpose.I wonder why it says that it won't work that way.

weird, a lot of the newest reviews say it works great, and a lot of the older reviews say it doesnt work like that, or at all, because of the weak output...

i wonder if they switched manufacturers?

I just received my toslink selector from mono today. Its the 3 way manual selector, tried different toslink cables and no dice. I had read one person said that a weak toslink cable or a long one might not work b/c the signal is to weak. I was trying out a 6' toslink cables connected to my HD and a 1 1/2' cable on the output to my receiver.

Im not sure on monos return policy, debating on trying the reverse splitter you guys are mentioning for my PS3 and A-3 player. I dont feel like buying another 2 - 4' toslinks to see if that solves my problem. Already have enough cables lying around.

http://www.amazon.com/Cables-To-Go-27027-Splitter/dp/B0002344GG Description says the same deal. As long as both power supplies arent running you can use it in reverse.

I have 2 12 footers on my splitter and they are fine. My switch is kinda funny that i need to click it on the selection a couple times for my reciever to say digital not analog anymore.

Do you have the splitter or the manual selector?

the three way manual switch.

Are them suppose to be little lights that light up when the signal passes through on the switch? Im trying to figure out weather I just got a dud or something. Cause I tried different cables and different setups and my receiver doesnt pick up anything from it.
