View Full Version : Sharp Movie Mode Question...

Hi, so I've noticed and read that movie mode on most displays provides the most accurate colour decoding. I think that's definitely true of my 92u series Sharp LCD. Thus far, though, I haven't figured out a way to make that same accuracy transfer over to other modes, even when I make every user-adjustable setting exactly the same. Is that supposed to be possible using user-mode adjustable settings? In particular, I want to make the User modes for each input behave roughly the same way. The differences between inputs that I use is slight but significant enough for me to need to have slightly different colour and tint settings for my HTPC and NTSC tuner.

I've actually gone into the service menu to see if there are differences between the MGAMMA IN and MGAMMA 1-6 values depending on the A/V mode selected. Of course, since you can't seem to change A/V modes while in the service menu, I've had to do a lot of unplugging and plugging to see if the modes make any difference. Thus far, there is no difference in the GAMMA settings from mode to mode. I haven't checked every page in the service menu to see if other values change, but I'm wondering if it's actually possible to make the User mode decoder settings for a particular input the same as the Movie mode.

Even though I'm asking the question, it doesn't mean that I intend to make any service-menu level changes-- I just want to know if it's possible to make another mode's decoding like the Movie mode.

Yes, it is possible but that information is usually found in the design menu section of the TV where the design engineers play and not the service people.

Access to this area is more difficult although on the sharp ... a key will bring up this 200+ page menu item versus the normal 20 page item in the service menu itself.

Thanks for this response, Michael, it's much appreciated. It's very heartening to find out that there is hope for this set, as lately I have been thinking that a Panny PZ series 1080p plasma would have been a better TV to buy. I really want this set to look as good as possible in the long run.

Even though I don't have the equipment to perform a proper calibration myself, I'm still interested in learning more. Basically, I'm looking for resources that explain more about what is discussed in this link: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12485680#post12485680 and how that relates to my television and my input sources. In that post, the poster says that getting the primaries correct isn't as important as decoder error. So if that's true, why is fixing the decoder error so difficult on these sets? Why do TV manufacturers put so much effort into bunk modes like the horrible Dynamic and only give us one mode that's even remotely close to working properly?
