ok, so I just recently bought my 360. However, whenever I watch DVD on it, instead of being 1080i widescreen like they games are, it goes into 4:3.

So when I'm playing a 16:9 DVD, I get a 4:3 picture with letterbox.

Is there a way to change this? I heard that 360 only outputs in 480p through component. However, I remember distinctly playing 480p games on my original xbox in widescreen. My setup is component into Sceptre 42. Would buying the VGA cable solve this problem?

the 360 doesn't handle non standard dvds all that well. Some Older or more budget dvds lack the proper formatting flags that many DVD players use to format the picture. IF your tv has it own picture formatting options try changing it to stretch or full. VGA won't bhelp you especially since the picture can still come out 4:3 and many TVs(including mine) don't have special picture options for their VGA connections.

Have you tried the 'zoom' (I think that's what it's called) function on the xbox remote? Also, go into the settings blade and make sure the output matches your TV.

There are a couple of possibilities. One is that the DVD you're watching isn't anamorphic widescreen, and is a 16:9 movie within a 4:3 frame. In this case you can have the xbox fix the image (under advanced controls).

Your TV may also be set to treat 480p as 4:3. In that case, the next time you watch a DVD on the Xbox change the TV's aspect ratio to fill the screen (could be called "full," "16:9" or something similar).

I would definitely recommend the VGA cables, and not just for movies. You can set the Xbox to output the TV's native resolution, which usually looks better than having the TV do the scaling.
