View Full Version : I'd like to buy an Xbox, but . . .
rvs053063 01-02-08, 07:40 PM I'm concerned with the reputation the 360 has for dying. I read somewhere that the Halo edition is using a new chip or heat sink or something that helps minimize RRODs; does anyone know this to be the case? I have also read that the 360 is very loud. I've also read that there's an accessory that you can buy to play HD DVDs. Would anyone recommend this? Anyway, these are some of the questions I have before I add this to my PS3. Also, I don't have HDMI on my TV; I'm assuming that the 360 can work with composite or DVI? Thanks for your input.

assasyn 01-02-08, 07:46 PM Try searching, there is probably 5 threads for each of those issues.
No DVI for 360 output.
Good luck.
dmaul1114 01-02-08, 07:48 PM Pretty much anything you buy now should have the new heat sinks. There's also a new motherboard out that has a smaller CPU that should run a bit cooler (how much is debateable since it's the GPU that puts out the most heat). You can assure you get one of those by looking on the info on the box to see if it has a 175W power supply. If it does, it has the new motherboard. If it's 223W it probably still has the old (though you may luck out and still get the new one).
At any rate, you get a free 3 year warranty for the RROD error problems, so I wouldn't let that stop you.
Output is composite, component, or HDMI. There is an HD-DVD add-on available.
Buy the 360 from Walmart... Buy a $19 2 yr Extended warranty plan... BOOM your golden (wont have to worry about sending it to MS for 3 weeks, just get a new one from your local Walmart). If you enjoy online gaming... i'd recommend the 360 over the PS3. I own both and prefer the 360 for everything but the PS3 is about to grow over the course of 2008 with some hopefully AAA titles and PS3 "Home" (Google it).
I'd still recommend the 360 though and wouldn't let RROD sway your purchase. You could either pay a measly $19 for the extended warranty or be assured your covered for at least 3 years due to RROD from Microsoft.
Actually I just looked up the prices on the warranties through Walmart... Here they are:
http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=2+year+warranty&search_constraint=0&ic=24_0&ref=+125866.g125866
So it looks like you could only get the cheaper one if you was going to buy the Arcade 360...
LAKE4742 01-02-08, 08:03 PM Are you serious, or trying to be funny? As assasyn said there are plenty of threads discussing all of these things. Yep, it's loud, it has a HD-DVD attachment, and no DVI, but it also has a stellar software lineup, and great on-line service. I highly recommend it.
IAMgoat 01-02-08, 08:03 PM as far as DVI you could buy a HDMI DVI adapter and that should work fine.

As long as the display in question has HDCP ;) .
Oh and for the WalMart service plan you still have to get it to a service center , it's not in store swap no questions asked ;) .

You don't need HDCP for games.
But yeah, you can have DVI with HDCP.
rvs053063 01-02-08, 08:21 PM Tx for the feedback. Can anyone confirm that the Halo edition has the new design to minimize RROD? Thanks.

Look for the 175W power supply XBOX. It will have the power rating on the box. If it says 203W then put it back. It is an old one.
dmaul1114 01-02-08, 08:38 PM Actually, some with 203 may be Falcons. But with a 175W you are guaranteed that it's a falcon.
I'd like to buy an Xbox, but . . . I'm afraid of investing hundreds of dollars in games in accessories only to have it die 4 years from now.
I'd like to buy an Xbox, but . . . the fan noise is extremely loud.
I'd like to buy an Xbox, but . . . 50 bucks a year for online play really adds up over the years.
I'd like to buy an Xbox, but . . . HD DVD addon, optical addon, wireless addon, online acocunt, man this thing got expensive!

That is what the option for replacement plans are for. "A piece of mind"

You have options to pay monthly and if you have to worry about $50 from 2 years ago then. Hell I don't know what to tell you on that.

So do cars, mortgages, girlfriends(unless you prefer other means , hey do your thang)
None of the things you mention you have to have to play the console. You have the first month free for Gold Live service to decide if you want to pay monthly or pay (the ohhhh so expensive $50/yr ) Or just get silver for free

That is such a good place....I can't imagine staying in there for 4 hrs...whew..your right that is expensive!!!
Mindwarper 01-03-08, 12:33 PM You will be very happy with a 360. Look for the 175 watt models for the new falcon chip. It is almost everywhere now. You can get a hdmi to dvi cord from monoprice. Get a 12plus 1 xbl card from amazon. Buy a few games. The hd add on is one way to get hd dvd. You already have a ps3, so why not go neutral. There are stand alones though. I have the add on and love it. The ps3 is slightly quieter then the falcon 360.
Games I would start with:
Bioshock
Mass effect
orange box
cod4
halo3
nineteen70 01-03-08, 12:57 PM I bought the arcade and it has an hdmi connection and its not as loud people say it is,well the one I got isnt.Get one and enjoy it

Definitely no. My Halo 360 has the HDMI port and doesn't even have the new heatsink, let alone the new chipset.

Correct but as soon as somebody goes to play a movie or other media ( HD DVD ) then the problem can show itself . I think it best to just make people aware of it up front if they are asking ;) .

Quoted for truth, if you're going the service plan route I'd suggest Best Buy.
