Its about patience. :)

I was just wondering if there is anyone else out there that chose not to preorder a Samsung 5000 and/or is also waiting for any firmware to correct issues to actually come out and be implemented before buying one.

Granted, this presumes that they'll actually fix the problem(s). If not, no biggy as there is always more machines coming out.

Yeah, I preordered from Amazon even though CC.com had 'em in stock for awhile the other day. Amazon doesn't charge you till it's actually shipped anyway...so you can always cancel the order before they're in stock in about a month. They had it reduced by $50 for one day before returning to the regular price....so I went for it. Of course free shipping & no tax as well. I figure some glitches and assorted nonsense should be addressed by then with a firmware update.

Our Local Circuit City (Houston) will meet their web price so I am waiting untill they have them in the store. I prefer B&M over shipping for return purposes. I tend to believe they (Samsung) are making adjustments before shipping more units so I may have a month or so to wait.

Anyone else patient and waiting to buy the Samsung 5000 after bugs are fixed?I pulled the trigger on a BD-UP5000 from BB. My player was so bad right out of the box, I returned it and got my money back. Now I will wait for CES 2008 to see what new DVD players will be announced for this year. If/when Samsung gets the bugs resolved for the BD-UP5000 and provided no better DVD player(s) are available, I may give it another shot in a few months.

IF they get the advanced audio codecs working properly, I might consider it then. Of course that's also assuming the many other bugs are ironed out too.

In the interim we may get a better dual-player from some other manufacturer.

It may be that the hardware in the Sammy will not fully support the advanced codecs. IOW, maybe the problems can't be solved with new firmware.

I don't know, but I suspect that if it could support them, the 5000 would have had that functionality from the beginning.

From what we've deduced in the below thread, it would appear the broadcom chip can do everything but DTS-HD MA.

The DTS-HD-MA is still pretty vague, it may or may not do it.

Now Samsung fully implementing this is another story. Maybe this was their entry level dual player and they release a higher end model that is profile 2.0 capable with all the lastest high res codecs.

I'm in the same boat. Going to wait and watch the updates for a month or so. That is easier said than done because I just bought a 60" Sony SXRD...

mjrichar,

Read the thread about disc the player has problems with and you'll find that patience is easier to come by.

Here's a visual for you. Friends over to watch your new display You pop in a Fox disc and it doesn't play. You hear snickering. Turn head and raise eyebrow. Someone throws popcorn at you. You throw a universal remote at them. Fight ensues. :)

Like a lot of people I am waiting to see if the Samsung or the LG unit can play all the audio codecs and iron out some of the issues playing certain movies. I will be at the CES next week to see what is coming out as well.

You wait- Samsung is going to announce a BD-UP5010 unit at CES. The "next gen" unit. Which is a rebadged 5000 that is "fixed."

Wait for it......

Pre-ordered mine in August, got a call that it was ready to ship before the Holidays and I told them to never mind. I have lost faith in certain Asian
CE companies at this point and don't want to reward them for their half-baked
products.

if "fixed" includes speaker distance settings, bass management, etc. i might be persuaded to take a quick peak at it. :D

Hey boys..it may not even matter. With Warner going exclusively Blu (wonder how much Sony had to cough up for that.lol), we may find that after the 5000, there won't be any further dual format players. It'll be interesting to see what Samsung does at CES.

I just read the Warner announcement and will likely pass on the dual player (and HDDVD). I think I'm going all Blu with a PS3 40g purchase. I think it is only a matter of time before the red camp packs it in.

The first good combo player that does all the advanced audio and is around $500 gets my buy. I can't bring myself to get a ps3 since I refuse to buy a system that doesn't have any good games (that I can't get on my 360), and I really can't stand the controller. ;)

thats funny! For me, its a little too late, too expensive, and a lost hope to support hd-dvd. Anyhow, it should be a good player if it comes in on time with the promised features. It will be perfect for a lot of consumers.

Bypassed the dual-format LG model since it apparently lacks the interactive-menu feature I wanted for (at least) the DVE test disc. Scanned the discussions about the 5000's supposed 'grain' problem, but still haven't figured out the score on that. Plowing through HD-disc release lists I see very little yet that interests me; (prefer more Oscar winners and classic foreign films); coupled with a huge menu of movie options from subscribing to all cable premium channels, suspect I'll await 5000 price drops and further developments. Still prefer a dual-format machine because it would be irksome to see titles I couldn't play. -- John
