View Full Version : COD4 on Veteran
Hastley 01-03-08, 06:08 PM So, i just got call of duty 4. It is my first COD game ever. I have beaten gears of war on hardcore, and gotten to raam on insane. So i am not a completely novice FPS player.
However, on Veteran difficulty COD 4 i find myself getting destroyed even on the first mission. Do you COD4 veterans (pun intended) have any hints that can assist me in my conquest.
mboojigga 01-03-08, 06:19 PM Keep practicing is all I can tell you take cover when needed. If you got surround sound then get ready for some intense "oh my fuc*ing......whoa" moments.
Mw182006 01-03-08, 06:30 PM This was my first COD game and I immediately started on Veteran, and my feeling is that the first few larger missions spawn enemies endlessly until you push up to the checkpoint. I would sit back and mow guys down but they would eventually overwhelm me. Take out as many as you can with your clip, move up to the next cover spot and repeat. Have fun on Mile High :)
assasyn 01-03-08, 06:31 PM It's very hard. I'm about half way through Veteran now. You have to experiment with different attack plans and find which one works. If you get a seam, run with that route.
lynesjc 01-03-08, 06:43 PM I've beaten Vegas, GRAW, Gears, Halo, and BioShock all on the hardest settings.
COD4 is harder than all of those, by far.
Enemies endlessly respawn, they're all a bunch of damn Annie Oakley snipers, and it literally rains grenades, which are unfailingly accurate.
Understand that your squaddies only move up when you do and you often need to advance to a certain point or checkpoint in order to stop the enemies from respawning.
You can't just sit back and snipe and clear an area.
Flashbangs, smoke, explosives, and cover are key.
I have been stuck on the last level for about five or six hours... at the same damned checkpoint. Apparently on veteran, your head is a giant flashing light with a huge magnet on it. It sucks so bad.
I finished Act 1 on Veteran and then realized that I wasn't having that much fun or deriving much satisfaction from completing the levels. I would just be thrilled not to have to play the same checkpoint over for the 25th time. Hardened was about right for me, making the neverending human wave attacks, every enemy soldier a crack sniper or grenade thrower gameplay more bearable.
Cougar24 01-03-08, 07:07 PM I beat Veteran in about 2 days. The best advice I can give you is not to give up. It's about 1 part skill and 2 parts luck. Alot of the time I was spawn at a checkpoint and get rocked, then I would respawn, and not get shot at for like a minute. If you can't get past a certain point because there are too many guys, be agressive and get the checkpoint. Hell, alot of the time I would rush past the enemy line to get a checkpoint and my guys would be fairly close behind. If you're just looking for a good strategy, check out this site:

I've been watching the video mile high achievement. I have no idea how I'm going to do that. Hope this helps.

Good advice, I came to the same conclusion. The Jihad fighter factory inside every building really was the only letdown for me in the entire game.
I beat the game on Hardcore and tried playing again on Veteran and it's like a different game. On Veteran this is by far the hardest game I've ever played...endless enemies and all are sharp shooters and can throw gernades within inches of you no matter where they are.
It's been said earlier and it's true:
a) You can't just sit back and shoot....they keep coming.
b) You squad will not advance without you advancing.
Even knowing those two things, playing this game on Veteran is the most frustrating experience to date.
danggang 01-03-08, 09:43 PM I made it through Veteran mode and found it an extremely fun challenge. But it's definitely a challenge :). There are spots where you'll get stuck (at least I did), but the good news is that if you can make it through these the game does ease up a little before getting really hard again. The timed levels are particularly tricky because you have to keep moving -- and moving fast, in some cases. Also, as others have pointed out, beware the raining grenades; when taking cover, make sure you have at least a little room to retreat or otherwise move around because the enemy will mercilessly bombard you with grenades every chance they get.
Ive started in on veteran. In the middle of the third level. Like others have said, flashbangs and proper cover are the only option, and luck as well. I havent found it TOO hard up to this point but it sounds like its coming soon. I will probably play until I truly get stuck, but Im not going to repeat a checkpoint 50 times, I'll just throw in the towel. I beat COD2 on veteran and only ran into 2, maybe 3 spots in the whole game that truly p!s$ed me off. I hope this doesnt frustrate me that much.
formulanerd 01-04-08, 01:11 AM with all the "damn this is hard" comments, i'd swear that nobody played COD2 on veteran before :D
i wiped a nervous sweat off of my brow after finding out that COD4 was quite a bit easier.
I say...Just keep moving and shooting and nade them right back. (devilish laugh)
longhorns 01-04-08, 02:19 AM It is probably the hardest game you will have played so far. Trick is to go balls out brotha. COD4 may not seem like a run and gun game, but at some points that's exactly what you need to do. Don't be stupid and run into a fire fight, but the trick about it is, IW made the game so that if you got by a certain point, even if you didn't kill anyone, you'd move on WITH YOUR TEAM. YOUR TEAM MOVES WITH YOU. You must advance for them to advance, so be on the move all the time. If no advice here works, youtube is your new bestfriend
ggreen1 01-04-08, 02:40 AM It's funny reading everyone's posts because I honestly thought I was the only one having problems making it through Veteran... lol
It is the hardest FPS I have ever played and I always start on the hardest level in games
I don't know about the rest of these guys but I had trouble in spots (ferris wheel, getting to the blast door in time, etc) but when I finally completed the game it was VERY satisfying.

I'm very encouraged by this. Finally someone else who has done COD2 on veteran ; ) I did it. It was one heck of a challenge, and as I mentioned there were two parts that utterly enraged me. (One was near the end of the game, you had to clear out a house that was completely surrounded and full of people inside, and you had to approach it from no cover at all). I'm glad to hear at least someone thinks COD4 is a bit easier. Thats been my experience thus far with at least the first 3 levels.
properbostonian 01-04-08, 09:07 AM It took me about 2.5 weeks (playing sporadically) to get through CoD4 on Veteran.
It took me about 6 friggin months, again not playing everyday, to get through CoD2 on Veteran.
I, too, had a hell of a time with those lettered houses. What a nightmare.
darwin316 01-04-08, 09:14 AM Huh?
I, too, finished COD2 on Veteran and I think COD4 is a lot harder... I'm stuck on the war room level with the 9 minute time limit.
lynesjc 01-04-08, 10:27 AM Finally got the time trial course ach last night. 19.95s FTW!
I'm almost to the Ferris Wheel on Vet, and am hating life.
The end of Shock and Awe was tough. As was the beginning of One Shot. Safehouse was surprisingly easy. Spamming helo strikes FTW.
It's really more luck than skill, I'm convinced.
Go very slowly, use that auto aim assist feature pressing L2 I think? Let your teammates help you out.
lmychajluk 01-04-08, 12:11 PM Right. Your teammates seem to be almost indestructable, and they get replaced with new guys running up from the back when they do go down. So, pop off some shots, move up so that your teammates move up as well, and then let them clear out some of the enenmy before you rinse/repeat. Look for the enemies that they're not shooting and try to take them out.
The TV Station was a b*tch! And, because of the recent Live issues, I don't think I got the Achievement and will need to go through it again. >:(
properbostonian 01-04-08, 12:22 PM After playing on veteran, I played it again on the easiest level. I was so stressed out (ok, I was pissed) getting through it I wanted to go back, relax, and enjoy it.
It really is a great game with a terrific, real world story, but perhaps a little too difficult on veteran.
Also, I was able to pick up some leftover achievements.
I agree with most that COD on vetran is an exercise in frustration. Personally I found CoD2 and CoD3 much harder than CoD4 on Vetran. Part of that frustration was the lack of good checkpoints in CoD3, and the rediculous accuracy of enemies (your whole squad is standing in the open, while you are crouched down behind a barrel, and yet they selectively shoot you from across the screen, etc). Similarly, in CoD2-3 you needed to get to a certain point in the map to have your allies also move up, and stop the endless respawning, otherwise you will be pinned down and killed quickly. CoD4 did not have as much of that.
With regards to strategy, One option is to play the game on easy, recognize the places where the enemies are, the chock points, and then play the game on vetran, knowing which path to take. The hardest part of the game (other than mile high club which I have finished on hardened, not vetran) was 'no fighting in the war room'. Even that was not as bad as 'crossing the road', 'fuelplant' or even the Canadian mission 'Laison river' in CoD3 or "D-Day, Hill 400, Silo, or that Church mission in CoD2 (man those were frustrating levels).
I know not everyone cares about achievements, but if there were no achievements for vetran, then I would not have played that difficulty. I had a poll, and many people played mainly because of the achievements, otherwise it was not worth it.

Kain1111 01-04-08, 12:44 PM I personally think that it is a bit easier than COD2 on veteran. It took me about 12 days to beat COD 2 on veteran but there were some definite tricky parts. I'm only about 30% through COD 4 and from what I've heard the timed parts are very hard. I will say that the TV station reminded me of COD 2's Silo level. Very frustrating but with persistence anything can be overcome. Finishing 2 was my greatest achievement ever. There are sections like the TV room that have little end-arounds that allow for a much easier time and with CLaymores and C4, COD 2 seems harder and harder. I will admit that I liked smoke better than flashbangs though.
Saleen4971 01-04-08, 12:47 PM one shot, one kill on vet is the hardest part by far IMO. i found the best way to stay alive there, is to lie down behind mcmillon. when you get a free minute before teh choppers drop off more troops, toss C4 where htey usually group up, and then lie back down and cover the right side. then when the chopper gets there, toss ur nades, blow the C4, grab him and RUN!!!
HeadRusch 01-04-08, 03:15 PM By the way, this applies to ALL of the COD games...they are all infuriatingly difficult on their hardest difficulty settings, to the point of not really being fun.

Yeah... I'm getting my ass kicked right now. :(
longhorns 01-04-08, 06:14 PM Here's what i posted in the COD4 thread when people couldn't beat that level...
Once you place the injured guy down on the ground, turn around to face where you came from, then turn right, go towards the bumper cars, but right before you get there to your left is a little shed, RIGHT next to the ferris wheel. If you go inside this ferris wheel, and LAY DOWN ON THE GROUND, face the door, you'll be fine. Becareful for grenades that are tossed in the room, some make it...most don't lol. With this method there's no need to even place claymores or C4, just wait till your chopper gets there, pick up your man, AND GET THE HELL OUT!
It takes some time, a lot of times it doesn't work, but if you're patient enough it will definitely work.

I actually just finished veteran this morning, the above advice for the ferris wheel level is good advice, I ended up in that booth when the second wave of troops came in. The grenades that come in are easily thrown back out, the ones that land in close proximity are usually far enough away to take little or no damage at all.

The thing Im noticing is almost all of the really difficult parts seem to have some kind of trick or particular strategy you can use that make it MUCH easier. The TV station for example (Im assuming the part everyone hates is the giant TV room with two levels). As soon as you enter the room, if you immediately turn right and sprint towards a small room at the end (sprint straight, do not turn right into the other small room, that one is suicide), underneath the second level where the guys on the second level are, you can hide in that room and peek out and take people out fairly easily. Grenades will come in though so you have to chuck them back a few times. If you need to come out of the room, you can hide behind the desks and just stay along the wall. You will eventually have to come out and stay along the wall and help pick off a few of the guys who will keep coming out of the office rooms. Overall though, your teammates will take care of most of the hard work.
I probably died 20 times trying to spring into the office rooms as soon as I entered the giant room, however I only had to try twice hiding in this other room.
Im sure there will be a few parts where there just isnt a good strategy, but I havent gotten to any yet (near end of 4th level).
lynesjc 01-07-08, 09:18 AM Finished yesterday. No Fighting in the War Room was by far the hardest part. Without a video walkthrough, I never would've made it.
Ferris wheel was surprisingly easy. Made it on like the 3rd try. Way easier than when I played it on normal.
Im through Shock and Awe now. There have only been a couple parts that have gotten my blood pressure up thus far. War Pig, after you get through the first area, there is a part with buildings on both sides, and you can take the back alley behind one of the buildings. Until I had the strategy down perfectly, it took me forever.
Also, on Shock and Awe, near the end, there is an area where you drop out of a torn up building and are forced to go straight at a TON of enemies, guys in windows, on the ground, everywhere. I rushed under the windows and luckily killed the people coming at me so I could stick on the wall until my teammates charged forward.
Im fearing No Fighting in the War Room
lynesjc 01-10-08, 04:14 PM The beginning of One Shot One Kill was also maddening, trying to get to the first apartment building and the first checkpoint. It was actually harder for me than the ferris wheel extract at the end. I just love almost making it only to be undone by the dog...
Last part of Heat, getting down the Hill was great fun as well, in a masochistic kind of way.
CaCHooKa Man 01-10-08, 05:24 PM i started playing COD 4 on veteran since i first put the game in. i never tried any other difficulty. i havent even played a COD game since COD 2 on my PC a few years ago. it isnt as hard as i expected it would be.
I finally just beat this on veteran. Took a while. Ending part is freaking awesome.
Nics1246 01-10-08, 10:43 PM Other than "No fighting in the War Room" level and the "Mile High Club" Achievement, it was not that bad to me.
Jeff Flowerday 01-11-08, 11:47 AM with all the "damn this is hard" comments, i'd swear that nobody played COD2 on veteran before :D

Absolutely, COD2 was tough. I almost threw my controller after failing to get to the next checkpoint 500 times in a row. :o
COD4 is much easier on veteran.
I remember on my playthrough I was trying everything on that ferris wheel part.
One thing I discovered that almost worked was after you place the injured sniper,
if you run back down the alley you just came from, the same alley the sniper picks off guys from.
Hang a left around the building where the guys spawn from, and just sit there behind the building.
They don't spawn from there, and only come from the other side.
So when the guys come from the other side,
they have to run down that long alley way behind the buildings to reach you.
Where they are easily sniped.
And if they try to run down the same alley you just ran up, on your blind corner. The injured sniper picks them off.
It almost works up until the helicopter lands, cause then that area is swarmed with guys and you can't really make your way back to the sniper, lol.
Or at least I couldn't.
So what I ended up doing was laying low behind that fence on the other side of the bumper cars.
The guys had a hard time getting around there and were easily picked off.
And grenades were pretty easy to dodge from there.

I layed down behind the tree and faced the ferris wheel. Right against it is important. Tossed some grenades as needed, set off some charges occasionally and just shot anyone else that came around the tree. When it was time popped and killed a couple more guys, grabbed the wounded sniper and ran to the chopper.
The only way they could shoot me was if they came from the ferris wheel side, from my behind the injured sniper got them.
assasyn 01-11-08, 04:21 PM I'm stuck at the part where you are flying in the chopper, manning the cannon. I keep getting picked off 10 seconds into it. It's right after Death from Above. Help?
lockheede 01-11-08, 04:41 PM I went on the other side of the bumper cars and sniped through the bars as best as I could. It took me 3 tries to get through it!

Yep, I had trouble at first with that part as well. You are no doubt not hitting all the tanks. You have to hit all of the tanks as well as the guy on the roof as your chopper starts to turn right. Just focus hitting the tanks before you get to the guy on the roof....once you pick them all off you will get a check point and it gets a bit easier.
