I bought the Sharp 42 inch d64u today. Currently I have the premium xbox 360 without the HDMI output. When playing through the component cables my TV says 1080p but, from what I know it won't show in full 1080p without the HDMI cord on the elite. Is this correct?

If your TV accepts 1080p over component then games will play in 1080p over component. HD-DVD's are limited to 1080i over component. DVDs are limited to 480p.

If you switch to HDMI you can get 1080p from HD-DVD as well and upscale DVDs to 1080p.

Thanks for the quick response! You answered a question in another thread with the same answer.

So the only benefit I would get in upgrading to the Elite would be the upscaling DVD player? No major picture quality increase in going from 1080p component inputs to 1080p HDMI inputs?

Correct, and if you connect via VGA, your Xbox upscales too. To be honest though, your TV probably upscales better than the Xbox does. I don't care what anyone says about hardware scaling vs software scaling or whatever, but the ol' MK I EYEBALL tells me that my Sammy scales 480p to 720p as well if not better than the Xbox.

Some namebrand TVs do scale nicely, the 1080p models in particular. It's those "other" TVs like Vizio, Westy, and Olevia that don't usually have great scalers. Not dissing those TVs, former Vizio owner myself, they just generally have cheap scalers.
