View Full Version : Sub advice needed
dziadek 01-04-08, 11:05 AM Hi,
I'm new to the forum so welcome everybody. I was searching this forum for a while and have narrowed my choices, but let me describe my situation. The room skech is below and all things are marked on it, sub is prefered position of sub. My set up is Denon AVR-2308ci, B&W 601S3 and I'm thinking about AV123 X-sub, HSU-STF1 or 2, 80/20 music/movies and another point is that the cabinet must be light "wood" or silver. Price range 200-350$.
doors part for equipment has 9.5'

So here are the questions, what do you think about this set up? Is X-sub powerfull enough (price is very good)?
Any opinion or advices are appreciated.
thanks

Jakeman02 01-04-08, 11:14 AM All of those subs will work in that size room and are good with music. I'd personally go for the X-sub over the STF-1. The X-sub is rated to go a little lower in the frequency range for HT. The STF-2 will give you the best of both though and would be the choice among them.
dziadek 01-04-08, 11:59 AM Thanks,
sorry but the sketch has moved to the left all the way:mad::confused:
you have to move in your mind the right wall to the right, left stay were it is right now.
sorry for that

thanks Jakeman,
do you have any experience with av123 rocket ulw-10?
thanks
Jakeman02 01-04-08, 05:30 PM No I don't have any experience with the ULW-10. What I've read has been positive. It's quit a bit over your stated budget though.

Forget about manufacturers specs. There are no set industry standards when it comes to measurement and this is a perfect example. If you compare the actual extension on these two subs, ground plain and at two meters the STF1 will actually reach down close to 20hz cleanly. Tom Nousaine measured one doing 75db spls @ 20hz in his large 7500^3 room. The X sub will extend down to about 28hz which is also it's advertised tuning point, but at fairly high spls it will produce port cuffing. The HSU will do 25hz all day long with out straining even in a average sized room. However for more output I would also recommend the STF2.

dziadek 01-04-08, 11:16 PM Thanks,
I'm looking for more money to spend on sub:). I was looking on HSU and compared VTF-1 vs STF-2 except weight and price (50$ difference) the spec is the same. What is the real differnce if any:confused:
thanks

The HSU VTF series has dual ports and unique low pass filtering to allow you to tune the sub depending on your room acoustics, taste and the type of source you are listening to. At the 32hz tune, expect extension down close to 25hz. With the 25hz tune you will be able to plug one of the ports and reach down to 20hz, but at the expense of output. For instance, if you're playing music you may want to use the higher setting. For HT, the lower setting may be preferred, especially if you are viewing a film with a lot of deep bass. In smaller rooms you may want to keep it at the lowest setting, since having more output may not be an issue for you.

dziadek 01-05-08, 10:39 PM Thanks for all posts.
Just some more questions:
if I'd placed one of sub described as "for large/mid size room" in room my size
16'x8,5'x9'celling what are pluses and minuses of this configuration e.g. VTF2MK3, SB12-plus or ULW-10 in my room size:confused:
Other question:
I saw in one of threads this comparison music vs HT:
music av123, HSU, SVS
HT SVS,HSU,av123
can you confir or comment somehow?
thanks
dziadek
