View Full Version : Mass Effect type games?
RafaelSmith 01-04-08, 11:11 AM I have really enjoyed playing Mass Effect. Just hit 60 on my 3rd playthru.
This is probably the first game that I have really gotten into in a VERY long time...I would have to say the last game that had me this "immersed" was the Wing Commander series on the PC...yeah I'm old.
Curious if there are other ME style games on the 360?....need something to hold me over until ME2 is released next year. :(
Ive looked and really cannot find anything...I tried Oblivion but just did not care for it...guess I prefer shotguns over bows and arrows =P
gpthree 01-04-08, 11:16 AM Not for the 360 specifically, but have you tried the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games?
jremy510 01-04-08, 11:18 AM RPGs are really the one weak spot in the Xbox 360's game catalogue right now. In addition to ME2, there's Fallout 3, which will be coming out probably 2009. It's being developed by Bethesda, and will be sort of like Oblivion-lite with shotguns. If you ever played the Fallout PC games, it will have many of the same mechanics and run on the same engine as Oblivion. It obviously won't be turn-based, but I think they are trying to incorporate some turn-based elements, like calling your shot locations.
Besides that, I don't think there's anything like Mass Effect right now. But given how popular it is, I'm sure there will be more than a few ME clones in a year or two.
number1laing 01-04-08, 11:20 AM Bioware's Xbox games all play pretty similarly, KOTOR and Jade Empire. There's also KOTOR 2 which was not made by Bioware but I think was pretty much the same.
RafaelSmith 01-04-08, 11:32 AM I played KOTOR and KOTOR2 on my regular XBOX.... Did not care much for Kotor2. Kotor1 was great.
Good thing I still have some achievements to unlock in ME =P

Compared to the PS3 and Wii, the 360 is strongest in RPGs.
Compared to the PS2, everything is weak.

I, too, enjoy Mass Effect much more then I thought I would but I put it down when I got Assassin's Creed two weeks ago. I have a newfound appreciation for RPG's and I plan on going back to Oblivion when I am done with ME.
As someone else so "eloquently" said, "If you like looking for sh$t, you can try Bioshock and Assassin's Creed." There is plenty to do and to explore with both games, if you are into that.
Of course, they are different then ME but a refreshing change of pace from the standard FPS.
RafaelSmith 01-04-08, 01:07 PM As much as I am ready for Mass Effect 2...I REALLY hope they take their time...there is so much potential both in gameplay and story.
As I understand it...they already had a trilogy planned for ME...which is a good thing... Instead of just making sequels for the sake of making sequels.
Its really no different than movies.
Mindwarper 01-04-08, 01:12 PM Another sci fi rpg for xbox is dues ex. For pc, you might try freelancer. Two worlds perhaps?
Too Human maybe something you want to keep an eye on.
fjtorres 01-04-08, 06:29 PM Careful when hunting for RPGs on consoles; Mass Effect is a *western* RPG which are significantly different from the Japanese variety.
The closest analogue to Mass Effect is, surprisingly, not KOTOR (which is excellent, nonetheless) but DeusEx: Invisible War. SciFi, guns, very interactive animations, game-engine cut scenes, and full-voice dialogue. Highly recommended. Nag MS to get it on the BC list asap.
Other candidates are:
- the Elder Scrolls series, especially the most recent ones; Oblivion and Morrowind. Both run on 360.
- Fable (euro-style art may not be to your liking)
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance is more action and less RPG but it features a lot of gameplay elements borrowed from the RPG genre. Ditto for its direct precursors, the XMEN Legends duo. Too Human appears to follow this road, too, adding RPG-like features to an action game.
- The two Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games for the original Xbox are BC and pretty good.
- Fallout 3 is allegedly due by summer
- Sacred 2 is coming from the euro branch of RPG tradition (much as Two Worlds which, while no masterpiece, is hardly the disaster some make it out to be. The voice acting, however, is generally bad, though.)
Most of these games are available for PC and don't require high-end hardware. If you haven't played Oblivion on 360, it should keep you busy until the Mass Effect DLC shows up later this year. If you insist on SciFi, go straight to DeusEx: Invisible War.
Either way, you should find a lot to like.
