I received my Mitsubishi HC4900 yesterday and was very impressed by the image it projected during the Orange Bowl. The only thing that I am currently concerned with is the convergence. When looking closely at some of the letters on the menu from a few inches away (about 4") it seems like the left side of the letter is green, the right side is red, and the bottom is blue.
I will be using the AVS HD calibration disk tonight to see if there is a convergence problem with a 1080p cross hatch image.
What is considered an "acceptable" amount of mis-convergence on an LCD projector and should I consider requesting a swap from projector people since I am under 4 hours if I have a small convergence problem?

1 pixel of mis-convergence is usually considered 'normal' on 3 chip machines. So, if you have 1 pixel of red on one side of the line, and one pixel of blue on the other that would fall into the 'normal' category.

I ran the cross hatch test pattern on the AVS HD AVCHD disk and the convergence is off by less than 1/3 of a pixel in the middle of the screen and about 1/2 a pixel near the edge of the screen. The pixels are red and green and are on opposite sides of the cross hatch lines. I almost have to put may face on the screen to see the misconvergence though. I think the difference from the middle and sides is likely do to my screen not being square to the projector in its temporary setup.
Thanks for all the help... Now time to enjoy the projector!!!

I thought I'd join in on this topic as I received my projector today and have noticed the same kind of thing. Although I need to be close to actually see the mis-convergence, it does seem to make my Windows desktop less sharp than expected as black lines and small text aren't as clear as on my old (very old) 1024x768 DLP projector. I have included a photo showing what the mis-convergence looks like. The image shows lines one pixel wide in black and other colors on a white background. You can also see a shadow image of my tripod used while taking the picture. It is only a 3mp image and not perfect focus but still shows the mis-convergence well. I believe the upper right side of the picture where the two diagonal black lines cross gives the best representation as you can actually see black when zoomed in where as the other "black" lines are mostly maroon and green blending to look like black from a ways away.

Would this level of mis-convergence be classified as normal?

p.s. PC was connected to projector via the DVI port and running at the native 1920x1080p. Two different PCs were used to verify the mis-convergence was due to the projector and not the video-card.

When looking closely at some of the letters on the menu from a few inches away (about 4") it seems like the left side of the letter is green, the right side is red, and the bottom is blue.Since you later put up a "real" Source with a crosshatch pattern, and it looked close-enough-to-perfect, I wanna say that the menu images are not the ones to judge the pj by. I haven't looked at my own menus since reading your post, but would guess from memory that they are not perfect, either.
The screen I see a lot, the Zoom/Focus screen w/rectangles, is of course green-only so doesn't say anything about alignment or menu image quality. But I think the internal menu generation is probably not done at the very high res this pj is capable of?

Keep in mind that lens shift can add to the problem. Pushing the shift to its extremes tends to introduce some of these anomalies including the misconvergence some are seeing.

do u guys kno any 3 chip dlp projectors?
do u guys kno any 3 chip dlp projectors?
Sure but you won't be seeing them on the Under $3K forum.

Burnsniper: Any misconvergence which stays within a single pixel and only shows some color fringing on the outside edges of the pixel itself is AMAZING:eek:
You have a fantastic unit. I see over 100 projectors a week.;)

I notice this same thing.
What did you do? Should I take this to the service place that is authorized that is only 20 mins away from me for them to look at?

If your experience is similar to burnsniper's i.e. less than a pixel off, consider yourself blessed. Are you saying you can see misconvergence at normal seating distance?
Note also the built-in menu system is NOT high definition and is NOT any indication whatsoever of convergence good, bad, or in-between!
