With XBL recently looking like XBD, rented PS3 version of COD4 using me BBuster coupon (as in for free).

Quick report:

- visually, it is hard to see a difference either way
- PS3, when playing COD4 is dead quiet, compared to XBOX 360. You can not hear the DVD drive, unlike with Xbox
- connecting to online games is pretty quick.
- PS3 reports "multichannel" sound, vs Dolby D for Xbox
- of course, there is the issue of controllers being different. I do like Xbox ones more. YMMV . Not sure if one can find PS3 controller shaped like XBox's one.

You'll probably find a better, bigger, less laggier online community on XBL

I was wondering about this and was actually thinking about buying a copy for PS3 to try it out. Couple of questions.

What kind of tv are you using and what size screen?
I can imagine the xbox would be louder. Do you know what drive you have?
Is one console faster in connecting?
The reciever probably reports "multichannel" if you have the PS3 to output PCM over HDMI as I do for bluray movies.
I too find the Xbox controller better but this is probably because I'm so used to it.
How easy is it to connect with friends on PSN and play?
How was the voice communication on PSN?
Were you able to see who was talking on PSN?

I can't really hear much except gunfire, explosions and kids talking smack when playing.

As for the sound, my receiver shows 5.1 channels being used and PLIIX to get it to 7.1.

the ps3 online network is good but not as good as xbox live.... i would take a laggy xbox live over a fine day at ps network... plus ps3 users are experiencing some problems with COD4 on ps3.

I think your talking about online, but cod4 on 360 is better for achievements on teh single player

They pushed through a matchmaking patch very quickly for the PS3 COD4 because the matchmaking was completely broken when it was released.

We are still waiting for the patch for the XBox, but it should be coming soon, and it should improve things. www.fourzerotwo.com for details on the patch.

Of course, the difference between the speed at which you connect to online games could also simply be the difference in the number of people playing online on the two platforms. In which case, the patch probably wouldn't fix things. But I bet it does improve matters.

I remember seeing a bunch of comparison photos that showed the 360 version had much better textures than the PS3 version (all taken in game on the same display) it wasn't every texture, mainly unimportant environment textures, but it was still a big difference. They focused on the area right before you get to the TV station (there are soldiers there to greet you) on the brown stone wall, use a sniper scope to zoom in and compare, the 360 version is more detailed when you take the time to look for it. Other than that they are the same. (this is the big difference in most multi platform games and I saw the same thing in the gametrailers comparison of Devil May Cry 4 (a close up of Nero's coat showed more detail on the 360 side of the comparison) again only noticeable when you look. I tend to prefer the PS3 for most games for some reason, although I got CoD4 for the 360 because I prefer it for FPS and had logged many hours on CoD2. Get whichever version you prefer the controller for and don't worry about it.

I think we all know the differences are only important to various fanboi around the globe.

As far as Live being dead, it's fine.

I know it's stupid, but I tend to buy non-exclusive releases for my 360 simply because of the gamer points. It's basically the very minor difference that tips the scales for me. That being said my 360 is in repair due to RROD.

LOL, sorry your post was funny. Like the OP I like to hear my game over the console noise. That being said I won't be buying either version because the SP is so short and I have enough MP games (with dedicated servers!) to play. I will be borrowing a friends 360 version to finish the SP mode.

If you can't hear your game over the console, then you have some really weak speakers. Or you have your 360 mounted to a helmet that you wear whilst gaming.

Either one requires immediate remedy. The 360 is definitely not meant to be worn as a headdress.

Player talk sound quality in on-line play seemed to be crisper with PS3 and noticeably so.

XBL probably eclipses PS3 in terms of subs, but in light of latest difficulties less is
more methinks :)

As for hosting private matches and inviting friends etc, I didn't get to it.

For me, I just wanted to see if PS3 is as noisy as Xbox when playing this particular
game and like I said: it beats Xbox hands down. No contest. PS3 is dead quiet.

To this day I am truly amazed just how MSFT managed to release it like this.
Forget the RROD - that they didn't know about. But the noise was always there.

If you need the high data rate with a red laser, you need a high disc RPM. 12x DVD drives are just noisy. No real way around it, unfortunately. :(

I think Xbox is better for achievements and xbox live (if you care). I only wanted to play the single player campaign (rented it) and did so for the ps3.

Why?

Because the less stress on the xbox the better. lol

shape - r u saying the PS3 COD4 is bluray media (higher aerial density translating to lower RPMs needed) ? I dont think so ...

Yes.

The PS3's blu-ray drive is 2x, and is ~1666RPM.
2x BD read speed is 72Mbit/sec.

1x DVD is 1475RPM to 575RPM. So 12x DVD is 17700RPM.
1x DVD is 1350kb/sec. 12xDVD is 16200kb/sec

I'm a little hazy on the DVD stuff. I know that some drives vary speeds depending on where the head is. Can't remember if that is just for reading or just for writing. Odd that the DVD data is harder to find. Perhaps because googling DVD brings up tons of unrelated stuff. I pulled this off of wikipedia.

So, anyway, the blue laser allows data to be closer. So a lower read RPM allows the drive to pull data off the disc faster. That is why the PS3 is more quiet. Fast DVD drives are just noisy.

Incidentally, BD has a theoretical max speed of 12x because any faster than that and the wobble of the disc makes it impossible to read.

CD has a max speed of 52x.

DVD has a max speed of 20x. All for the same reasons. Theoretically, of course. :)

that (PS3 COD4 being bluray disk) certainly explains why PS3 is dead quiet when playing it, compared to Xbox.

I have both. The graphics look the same.Controls better on the 360.The analog sticks are tighter.Slight learning curve to adjust. As far as noise levels. My launch 360 sounds like a jet.My arcade is just as quiet as the PS3.After several hours, the fan on the PS3,sounds like my original 360.When the hyper fan kicks in.As far as connecting online.I never had a problem with the 360.The first 4 days with the PS3,I could`nt get past LOADING GAME SETTINGS.After the patch it`s better, but it still has issues.Once you get in it works great.I have to back out of the games lobby several times to get in.(that`s always faster than sitting there waiting to join a game) I have not tried it on the 360 since before Christmas, loaned that copy to my brother. Both play fine on single player.

XBL being XBD this am EST, I played some more of PS3 version online. Managed to get 50+ kills in a game, no small feat as I don't have my favorite weapons yet :) . But I am getting used to the native controller a bit more. About the only bothersome thing at this point is the "click in" - it is not as assuring on PS3's controller as it is on Xbox.

My Xbox is also an Arcade edition, 2m old or so . Still with COD4 in, it sounds like they are using the La Manche digger under my house when I play it. It is that bad. Also, the
pitch of the noise it makes is just @ the wrong frequency - they might want to consider it instead of waterboarding - and keep the tapes too.

I do not understand why you guys are complaining about so much sound of the disc speed. With the fan of the projector, the fans from the multiple amps, and the massive amount of DD sound comming through the speakers, I have yet to be impressed with the fan noise (I have 2 Xboxes, 1 has been switched via RRoD thus I have tried 3 Xboxes). Yes in a pitch quiet room (such as when the game is loading, I can hear the DVD drive rev up, but during game play, nothing. And I do not have the volume cranked up, for movies the audio setting is -7 from THX reference, and for games it is -20. Similarly, the fan from the PS3 is also as noisy as the fan from my projector, it is not dead quiet. (when I fold, and everythig is off, it is very easy to hear the PS3.

With reguards to CoD4, I think that the current holiday problems have been aggravated. There have been issues, with jumping in games with friends, but once it, not really that bad, and hardly any lag. I played Halo3 the other day for hours no issues, similarly with Orange Box. Many people have been having issues with CoD4 specifically.
