Clarence 01-04-08, 03:08 PM Yes, those show up all the time at gov surplus sales.
IIRC, early D-ILA light valve.
I wouldn't want one in a HT, but if you're bored, it might be fun to see if you can get a picture out of it. But don't spend more than $50. And don't expect to ship it anywhere.
mp20748 01-04-08, 04:04 PM That's a really good price they have listed for it.
Now if the price goes up another dollar, it's not worth bidding on.
We had two of them installed in a very large church that we had to service. They were capable of shooting from a very long distance to the screen.
They have three small tiny 1" B/W CRT's in them. And a very large lamp assembly.
It makes a 1292 sound like a Dwin..
And If I remember correctly, you'll need 240VAC to power it.
We called it the "snow sled"
PeriSoft 01-04-08, 04:30 PM I'd love to mess around with one of those things. Really nifty tech; when I was researching another one of those out of curiosity I also found some REALLY weird stuff, including a light amplifier type projector which used electrical current to disturb a liquid surface, which then changed its refraction, or some such. Really cool the kind of stuff they did when they had no choice!
I also saw a HUGE CRT projector the army used during WWII which basically involved some really big, bright radar screens a floor down from a situation room, which would project up and light up a translucent map table with enemy positions. That must have been some pretty hot sh*t back in the day!
mp20748 01-04-08, 05:36 PM D-ILA and ILA are different technologies.
IlA was out first, and I'm sure it had 3 mini B/W tubes. I know the ones we worked on had the three tubes. Not sure which model had the tubes

Different, yes but they seem to be at least 5".. of course who knows if this is the same model.
Sonynut 01-04-08, 05:52 PM Reio-ta.. check out that thread above, and the pic I linked from the site the thread leads you to. Those are tubes in there:). One of the reasons I would love to get my hands on one of these.
Sonynut 01-04-08, 06:09 PM LOL no sorry needed. :) From what I know, the image from the CRTs is focused onto different colored light amplifier panels, sort of like mirrors that respond to the image hitting them. The light from the lamp is reflected off these panels and through the lenses. I am no expert on these, so I may be slightly wrong, but that is my understanding.
Lots of mirrors and all to be aligned, not to mention you can get a good 9" CRT projector for the price of the lamp alone! Plus, the contrast ratio really bites, 300:1 if I remember correctly. As said, very bright, and long throw machines.
Check Curt's site and look at the "HT with 103 seats!" thread. The theater mentioned is using a much higher quality variant of this machine. This one to be exact(but very modded):

Loudmouse 01-04-08, 06:54 PM I'm not going near that thing, my D50 is about my limit. It is a fascinating piece of technology though.

That sounds like the GE Talaria series, which I believe was first manufactured in the 60s and only recently (last 10 years or so) discontinued. Here's (http://www.hi-def.com/12K.html) one of the later ones...
spinforu 01-05-08, 01:30 AM wow look what this guy did in the digital forum with one of these. has it on a an 8 foot screen!!!!!!!!! can you say "ouch my retina!!"

Ever notice that no matter how ludicrous the price of a projector on projectorcentral there's always at least one user review? The one for that $246,000 ILA is a real gas:
"Personal Experience
This unit is pretty nice, its a little bulky for bringing around to business presentations but the image quality isn't too bad. 12,000 lumens is enough for most settings, but overall for the money i'd only rate this as fair."
