View Full Version : So far, great...except
ChrisCollins 01-05-08, 10:25 AM The noise, dear god the noise. When I first started up my 360, I thought a plane was flying over head. How can such a small unit make this type of noise? Its insane. I did check and my power supply says 175w.
Anyway, its been a ton of fun so far. I have discovered that one, I am playing this way more than I thought I would, and two, that I am not really good. haha
12x DVD drives are noisy.
whiskey > work 01-05-08, 11:38 AM the power supply lights up my bedroom at night like a christmas tree. Is this blazing light really necessary?

FormidableOne 01-05-08, 11:51 AM WOW, new 360's must really suck. I own two 360's (one Elite, one Premium) and I have no problems with either. I cannot hear much noise, with the elite being the louder of my two. I have no random lights out the back of my 360 either. The only light I do see is the amber one on the power supply, but that is very dimly lit.
I guess I lucked out then... :)

:::Handing formid a cookie::: :D :p ;)
nnarum23 01-05-08, 05:40 PM It's really not that bad on my Falcon Elite. I only hear it if there is a disc in the drive while booting up. Then during games it's silent. BenQ by the way.
darklordjames 01-05-08, 05:46 PM If you want to help dampen the drive vibration without voiding your warranty, then find some 1/2" soft rubber feet to stick to the bottom of the 360. I found that the super-thin rubber feet that come on the 360 by default transfered the drive vibration to the surface that my 360 was on, amplifying the noise. Thick, soft, feet helped a lot. I game alot at night while my girl sleeps, so my volume needs to be low.
lacombo 01-05-08, 06:02 PM I still dont get the loudness complaints. I only hear it when it 1st starts

Really?? That I have a hard time buying. Maybe you are just use to it. When the unit is on with no game, its pretty quiet. Throw in a game and its just so loud.

Really. I don't hear it at all. The room I have mine in is usually warmer too. Like I said in my previous post, only if I have a disc in the drive during startup, it will be loud. Then getting to the dashboard and so forth, it's quiet. It's really not a big deal. Plus I sit < 10 feet away.
Cygnus311 01-05-08, 08:45 PM You should hear the PS3...you can't. Yes the 360 is loud as can be but I usually forget about it once the guns starting blazing! :)

Same here.

Thats what i did and it helped a ton. I do the same with my PC, plus it helps with any vibrations. I mean the 360 is still loud, but if you have a speaker system you wont even notice it, well until you get to an area with just ambient noise, then you might catch yourself looking overhead for helichoppers! reminds of me back in the PS one days! people used to complain about how load it was when it loaded, and how that gave you the idea something was coming! Everytime i heard a click sound when loading new info while playing Resident Evil i knew dogs/ beast birds be on their way!

Sure you can. It starts off quiet, but the fan noise picks up noticeably whenever you get any sort of processor intensive tasks going.
HeadRusch 01-07-08, 04:41 PM Mine is loud...loud enough to be heard when its on, louder still when the DVD drive spins up and its gaming or movie watching. It sounds like its not even in a case, in fact I'd say it sounds just like a PC that is being built with no case :)
When gaming, however, I almost never hear it...or if I do, I'm accustomed to it and don't find it destracting.
Having said that, my PS3...I can't even tell its on....if its sitting next to me.
Caswell 01-08-08, 11:09 AM I've got a Falcon Pro w/ a BenQ drive. It's noiser than I expected, but it's only distracting during games or movies if you're listening for it (kind of like looking for the one dead pixel on my 37" LCD, still debating taking that one back).
I've read on other sites that the brand of fans makes a difference. There's Nidec, Sunon, and Delta going from quietest to loudest in that order. I've got the Delta fans, and while they're not silent by any means the BenQ drive drowns them out when it spins up.
I've never heard another 360. How loud were the older units?

Easy solution; move closer to the airport. The real planes will drown out the noise. :)
Likes others have said, mine only groans at start up and I have a launch 360.
HeadRusch 01-08-08, 11:48 AM Mine is a replacement (the loud one), my launch system was orders of magnitude quieter than the replacement. However, unlike the launch system, the replacement actually works pretty reliably. :)
My guess is hte "fix" for the early replacements was to remove some of the sound baffling inside the case and replace the fans with higher volume ones...thus the noise increase. But there is no fix for the DVD drives, those are just loud, period, due to the tray never really having a nice solid, quiet fit over the door enclosure.

This works people! Everybody should try it.
Malcolm_B 01-08-08, 05:55 PM When my HT speakers start letting loose with all the CoD4 explosions and automatic gunfire I can't hear jack from my 360.

You know where I got the idea? From Xbox 1. :) It ships with thick soft feet!
"When my HT speakers start letting loose with all the CoD4 explosions and automatic gunfire I can't hear jack from my 360."
My audio system is pretty rad, and during the day/evening it is loud and covers up any noticable noise from my consoles. For the 5am gaming times though, I need it quiet. The console noise does show up then. :) Really though, the 360 really isn't loud in comparison to others. The Xbox 1, Dreamcast, PS2 and Wii are all just as loud. Really only the PS3 and Gamecube are the only really quite disc based systems that I have ever seen.
