Is the Velodyne Minivee worth the price? The family room will be 16x21 with 10 foot ceilings and opens up to the kitchen and sun room. I like the size of the minivee, however I want to get the most bang for my buck. I have a feeling that the I really need probably a 12" or 15" driver for the room size in order to get adequate bass. The maximum I want to pay for a sub is $600. In order to get the WAF I need the sub to look nice too. Currently I have a Velodyne CHT12 which I like, but I plan to put it in the media room and my wife was never a big fan of the look of the CHT12 (black vinyl wrap). Any help is appreciated

Bang-for-the-buck and Minivee do not deserve to be in the same paragraph. the Minivees are ok for what they are, very compact subs that do the best they can for their size. The problem is that you can never really beat physics. If you want better bang-for-the-buck, consider a larger sub. Read many of the threads here. There are many good suggestions.

The Minivee is too small , you would need to go to a 12 or 15 inch SPL series to fill that room. The closest sub to your CHT 12 is the DPS 12 which has a piano black finish on top, and that may fall short in terms of output for you. The Rocket subs do offer lots of power for the money, plus they look nice too.

I'd go with the Rocket sub if you want something that sounds good but is finished well, but those might be a little underwhelming for your size room. You really do want something with a strong amp and/or a 12" driver and larger cabinet. The SVS SB12Plus is a compact sub that performs well and is also available in nice finishes, but even that will be hard pressed to fill the whole room with deep bass.

Can you up your budget a bit?

Is size the main issue or is it good looks? Might want to check out AV123's new MFW-15. Craigsub is expecting to get his really soon, and from what the few people that own them have said so far, it's supposed to be an extremely impressive sub, and it looks gorgeous to boot! It's pretty big (it total dwarfs the Minivee), though as mentioned before, to fill that room with convincing bass, you'll need to get something pretty large, IMO (unless you have close to three grand to throw at a JL F113). But it looks absolutely stunning, IMO. The wife might approve of its size - it would make a gorgeous end table ;). Anyway, just a thought. The PB12 Plus is also a great choice, but the MFW-15 is significantly cheaper. Good luck.

Might want to check out AV123's new MFW-15.

I was going to bring this up. I'm anxiously awaiting craig's impressions of it, but I'm already pretty much sold. Check it out. (http://av123.wetpaint.com/page/MFW-15+Subwoofer?t=anon)

$600 and if you can deal with it's... bigness, I think you'll be really pleased.

The MFW-15 looks impressive and is in the ball park price wise. It seems very similiar to the Epik Knight subwoofer. What sub is the better deal?

I listed to the MFW-15 extensively at the RMAF. The demo's were both music and movies. I know the acoustics in these venues aren't always the best but the MFW-15 (duals actually) sound pretty boomy. I realize they are working with a certain price point but I was really hoping for more definition and musicality. The movies all thundered, shook and rocked but, to me at least, the bass never fully impressed like it should have.
