View Full Version : Can you identify these recliners?
I spotted some leather home theater recliners today and rather liked the configuration: loveseat with independent recliners flanked by two (one on each side) individual recliners. There was a storage bin between each seat. Photo below:

I thought that these were Berklines, but I PM'd one of the Berkline dealers here and he didn't think so. I wasn't really shopping for this sort of thing today, so I didn't get the details from the dealer, but I mentioned them to my wife this evening and she opened up a window of opportunity for possibly buying a set of theater recliners, so now I'm stuck thinking about them. :)
Obviously, I can venture back out tomorrow to get the details, but I figured I'd get a jump-start here in case anyone had any personal experience with these and could comment on their comfort, etc. FWIW, they were manual recline. The store had them available in red, brown, and black.
Karlosus 01-05-08, 09:59 PM They look a lot like the chairs I have from Douglas Furniture (their Cinema line). The picture is a different configuration to what I have but I recall seeing the same setup. Take a look and see what you think...

Yes, I think you're right. Thanks! This is the same model chair you have (just a different configuration)? How do you like them in terms of comfort, build quality, etc.?
Karlosus 01-06-08, 11:38 AM The seats are comfortable and IMO well made. I have had them about 3 years. They still operate smoothly and are wearing well, although they don't get used as often as they should but this might change once I decide which front projector to buy :). I have the camel colored leather and stitching and the color is as good today as it was when they were delivered. All in all, I would buy again.
There was a discussion of these chairs here on AVS back then and as I recall they compared favourably to more expensive seating. Of course, the choices back then were more limited.
** I should add I am pretty demanding quality and aesthetic-wise so this isn't faint praise.
Thanks for your insight Karlosus. Unfortunately, it now looks like these are *not* made by Douglas Furniture, but by some company named Yuan Tai Furniture. Here's a link on their site for these chairs:

They refer to them as their "Chantilly" line (model number CH6500HT)
They appear to be an exact replica of the Douglas chairs, which then makes me wonder whether this Yuan Tai company cloned the design, or if perhaps they're all the same anyway. Maybe, for example, the Asian assembly plant that makes the Douglas chairs is the same one that Yuan Tai uses?
Karlosus 01-06-08, 03:44 PM They look remarkably similar, although in this new pic I can spot two differences.
The mechanism to recline is different. On the Douglas (at least on the manual, no idea about the motorized) the 'pull string' to recline is hidden between the seat cushion and the arm, whereas in the pic the mechanism can be clearly seen in its own compartment on the side of the arm. Also, there is a 'badge' at the bottom of the seat on the far right. Minor differences, it could well be they both come from the same source but I think the Douglas are manufactured in California.
Regardless, if the seats are comfortable, match the decor and the price is right I say grab them and enjoy them :)
Yes, good eyes. I actually prefer the more exposed reclining mechanism. I stopped by this dealer's other store today and am happy to report that the actual recliner set did not have that ugly badge on it. I'm not sure if Yuan Tai ever actually sold any chairs with the badge on them (if so, whoever came up with that idea should have been fired).
I sat in them again, looked at them again, and am still on the fence. I wasn't thrilled with the reclining mechanism. It seemed like I had to pull pretty hard on it and then the foot would spring up hard. I'm also having a tough time loving the black. That's probably the best color for my room, but it just seems so boring. I like the brown much better, but I'm not sure if it's dark enough to work with my room. The red is just plain ugly.
While I was at this store, though, I saw some other models from other manufacturers.
The set that intrigued me the most was a set of three they were selling on clearance for cheap. They were made by Coaster, and based on the photo I took and some online searching, I think they were their "Studio" model. These looked very similar to the Yuan Tai's, but had a single chair in the middle instead of the loveseat. But they were so inexpensive that I could buy two sets for less than the one 4-chair Yuan Tai set, which has me scheming about doing just that, swapping in one of the 2nd set's chairs to make a single 4-chair config plus two individual chairs. That would likely require me to purchase additional arms somewhere, and I'm not sure if that's even possible.
Welp, I plunked my money down on two 3-chair configs of the Coaster Studios in brown. One was a display model with a small scratch, and the other is supposed to be brand new. I took apart the display model to see how they fit together, and it looks like I can reconfigure these into a single 4-chair config plus a 2nd two-chair config.
If the room seems too cramped for that, I may also end up just using a 4-chair config and a single-chair config and put the extra chair in storage. With that approach, it looks like the single-chair will have a small area on one side where there isn't any leather, but I can hide that with an end-table.
If all goes well I should have them delivered this week. :)
Karlosus, thanks for your help, even though I didn't end up choosing the model this thread was originally about (and it turned out to be knock-off version of the one you've got).
Karlosus 01-07-08, 07:04 PM Good luck with the chairs, hope you like them. Post back and let us know how you get on.
