Hi there all.

I've been reading that the new Pioneer KURO series, both the 720p and the 1080p panels have a "smoothing" feature in them for film sources.. similar to Sony's Motionflow.

How well does this work on the KURO, does it work on ALL sources (SD, HD, BR, DVD), both interlaced and Progressive Scan, and on all inputs i.e. Svideo, HDMI, Component etc ?

How does it compare to Motionflow 120hz on the Bravias or the Samsungs ? It is as smooth ? Does it add whacky artifacts or other distractions ?

If you like that "look" sure it works. It's a bit buggy at times. I notice some of the pan shots stutter a tad around the edges and such. It doesn't look as extreme as the Motionflow, but do people seriously like this look when it comes to movies?

i've had the 120hz 71 series and both amp on the lcd and smooth on the kuro creates artifacts around the moving object which i can't stand.

i thought the KURO simply copies frames 3 times to get 72hz. That wouldn't affect the edges. Sounds like you're seeing sharpening/edge enhancement processing. Maybe it can be turned down.

Smooth mode is not the same as 3:3.

I have had both the xbr4 and the lnt71 series so I have been able to play with and compare the AMP and sony's smoothing to the kuro's and can tell you it isn't nearly as dramatic of a change on the kuro when compared to the LCD 120hz. You have up to 3 different setting's to use on the LCD 120hz and you have a couple of settings on the kuro which are Off, standard, Smooth, Advanced. Just like the LCD 120hz motion smoothing, you have to play around and see which of the 3 modes on the kuro gives you the best image. Smooth does do some artifacts around edges and corners which looks comparable to the LCD version. You can also get it to look like video rather than film. I think I have been using standard when watching BLU RAY LOST with 1080p24 enabled on my Kuro and have very positive results with no artifacts and no stuttering. Just a pure window like picture

sharpjunkie, as to the video look on the Kuro, do you know if you are liking no 3:2 pulldown or are there actual new vector-interpolated frames as on your Sony? I'm looking for a plasma that makes vector frames, like Sony & Samsung, and I don't care if it's 2 new frames to make 72hz or 4 new frames to make 120 hz.

Yeh i totally agree and the 71 Samsung makes you feel drunk when 3 of one objects on the screen :)

Is there any such comparable functionality on the Panasonic models?

I don't know about the vectors but I can tell you that the picture is more realistic on the pio 5080. I watched LOST on BD, David Gilmour concert on BD, Planet Earth on BD, and a few movies and the effect is perfect. The tv is like a diorama that you feel you can just reach into and slap some people around.
