Make no mistake, I am very happy that Blu-ray won the format war. However, I still feel sorry for those who innocently bought into HD-DVD before the 4th Jan 08 without knowing what was likely to happen.

As it stands, people will have to keep there old HD-DVD player to play the movies they've already bought, or will have to go out and re-purchase those movies on Blu-ray. I understand that people will feel pretty pissed about this, and rightly so.

So I call on the BDA to release an edict that says that anyone who owns an HD-DVD software title purchased before 4th Jan 08 should be LEGALLY allowed to rip it onto an Blu-ray disc in the event that they own a Blu-ray writer (once they come down in price).

Furthermore, it would be nice if they provided, FREE OF CHARGE, the software to perform this rip in a way that would be simple enough for Joe Public to do rather than need a Major in Computer Science to accomplish.

I think the above would be a nice gesture that would help dissipate some of the bad feeling currently going around. :)

This isn't a failed antidote for cancer we thought we had bought or food for our table in desperate times... It was a HD DVD player. A toy. And no one forced anyone to spend the money on this luxury item bought with discretionary income designed for pleasure.

im sure they wouldnt mind, as about 4 people in the entire world own an hd-dvd player, a bluray player, a bluray writer, and know how to rip from one to the other.

I agree with both the above. Certainly the BDA doesn't have to do anything.

But people would also probably call me naive for thinking that Warner would listen when I've called on them in these forums to drop HD-DVD and go Blu-Ray exclusive, but I and many others still did this. We should our support for Blu-ray. But in victory I think we have to be magnanomous and spare a thought for some of those who were on the losing side and equally lend our support to looking after them.
