View Full Version : Sirius Outselling XM....80% vs 20%?
Quality Is Job One 01-06-08, 08:53 AM Evidence #1...That's what the sales dude at Best Buy at Dartmouth Crossing told me yesterday when I asked...He said that having CBC Radio One announcers say "CBC Radio One is available on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 137" at the top of each news hour is a powerful marketing tool!
Evidence #2....Before Xmas at Future Shop in Dartmouth Sirius had their rep camped out at the sat radio display area and was "converting" anyone asking about XM to Sirius....LOL..I watched him work the room for awhile.
Is this just a local thing?

Pat6366 01-07-08, 08:07 AM Cosidering your in-depth research and your reliable sources of information, you've got to be correct.
RAVEN56706 01-07-08, 08:13 AM its doesnt matter anymore... soon they will be one
ClubSteeler 01-07-08, 09:41 AM Yes.. Sirius has been almost 3:1 in sales since Howard was signed.
That is really why the 2 companies are trying to merge as equals. XM had a HUGE lead, and then Sirius starting making up ground unbelievably fast. When they drew up the merger plans, XM still have a coule million or so more subscribers, but Sirius felt that they would catch XM by the merger and then eventually pass them.
Now they have just about caught up, and will pass.
What I don't undertand is how all of these listeners take it so personally. You state that Sirius is doing much better, and the XMer get all upset. XMers talk about how they hate Howard, or have better music, and the Sirius folk get all upset. I chose Sirius and couldn't be happier, and I'm happy for all you XMers that feel the same way. Look, these companies are struggling, and I want them to succeed.
Satellite radio is great, and I hope for the success of both companies, which might require a successful merger to happen. When we are all one, all of this stupid bickering can go away. Hopefully these companies can start better marketing too. If all these teenagers knew that they could get interbet radio, satellite radio, DVR-like recording, and listen to their MP3 on one device, satellite radio would explode. But now they are financially bleeding because of ipods.
Stop marketing NFL, MLB, and hundreds of channels, and target this enormous market of spoiled kids that get whatever they want.

Preach on my brother.... reason why fanboy's hurt forums
Bookworm 01-07-08, 10:10 AM I chose Sirius years before Howard's arrival and I'll have it for years after he's gone. I love listening to him but he's only one small part of all the great content on Sirius.:)
Col_Klink 01-07-08, 10:57 AM I had XM from the day they announced they signed with Nascar. When Nascar made the jump to Sirius for 2007 I subscribed to them just for the Nascar coverage and still had almost a year on the XM subscription so I had them both for almost a year. Lots of double coverage other than specific things and sports. Funny thing was XM had a booth set up at the Michigan race June 07. I don't know if it was a bad decision on their part or not but they were not getting any takers that I noticed. My take is a merger is the only thing that can happen. The market is not large enough to support two companies with overlapping coverage and it never has been. If not for a merger in a few years I would look for them both to go down the tubes. Nascar, NFL, NCAA, Stern, Martha Stewart are all just niche programming. Not one of them alone is going to keep anything afloat. I compare it to Blueray / HDDVD or VHS / Betamax. At some point one or the other is going to take the lead and end up the winner.
xzitony 01-07-08, 11:19 AM I compare it to Blueray / HDDVD or VHS / Betamax. At some point one or the other is going to take the lead and end up the winner.
Not exactly. Those two camps never merged before a leader came forward (which is STILL XM by the way) and it looks like XM and Sirius will be one soon enough (God, let's hope not)

Just using that as a comparison. I think the merger is pretty much a done deal. It was not that long ago that equipment was either XM or Sirius compatible, one or the other, including makes of cars. Now more and more you see equipment that is ready for both. Who loses out? We do. I know I spent a ton on both XM and Sirius. The only thing I can hope for is when it does take place 50% of my stuff works even though they are saying all will be compatible. Famous last words maybe.

If you're referring to my response, I wasn't taking it personally, I just thought that throwing out the 80% and 20% numbers based on the "evidence" and the sources the OP used was rather moronic.
RAVEN56706 01-07-08, 01:25 PM Pat6366, cant wait til we can all rejoice at the companies working together?
Pat6366 01-07-08, 01:46 PM Pat6366, cant wait til we can all rejoice at the companies working together? Only in that it should mean that sat radio stays in exisistence. Ultimatley for the consumer one company vs two will be a bad thing.

No.. It's just an observation in general of many forums...
Let me summarize every 4th post over the past couple of years on many forums:
Wow that was funny on Howard today.
You mean that overpaid jerk that is putting Sirius into bankruptcy?
I enjoy O&A much better.
Yeah their 0.0 ratings and failing markets is really evident of their talent.
Well I like music and Sirius is like FM radio.
Howard pack it in years ago and should just retire.
XM has horrible sound quality.
Sirius has horrible sound quality.
XM's equipment is lightyears ahead of that Sirius junk.
blah blah on and on... Like people get upset if someone "insults" their satrad.

In my area, XM coverage is way better, but personally, I like the Sirius Content better. On the merger, only one side's shaeholders have approved it, right? Has the other side voted yet?

So when will this merger happen? It has been talked about for a long time it seems.
BerryZilla 01-24-08, 08:34 AM The merger will be good for consumers, not bad. You will continue using the same equipment but certain content will be shared between the companies. There will also be a tier system so you can chose what you want to pay for content wise.

barbie845 01-26-08, 08:38 AM If they merger is shot down both companies will fold, neither can go it alone..Hell even if they merger I have my doubts if the new company can survive...
But damn the way the government is taking its time ruling on this merger you would think this is the biggest merger in the history of corporate America!

The government is still trying to grapple with the concept that Satellite radio competes with other forms of entertainment.

It's a no brainer...
DeeKaye07 01-26-08, 01:10 PM Sure would stink if the merger didn't go through and either or both companies went out of the business. We've come to rely heavily on our satellite radio (we've got XM) especially during baseball season, but really we use it a lot all year round, now.
I agree, there really is nothing else quite like satellite radio, no matter which one (XM or Sirius) you've got.

....OK, here's some more info....In Canada, Sirius passed 500,000 subs on Oct 11th October. They are likely close to 600,000 subs after the Xmas sales season

XM only has 350,300 subs in mid-Jan

has XM released year end numbers yet?
I have Sirius but in the northeast, way too many "acquiring signal" dropouts. Bought it for Howard and love the music but 70's is 70's whether played on one satellite or another.
You get the idea, classical is classical, hip hop is hip hop etc. They both play the same music, no?

XM will go so deep in to bands you never heard of. where sirius will go deep in to bands you listened to.

They will become one soon.
However, it will be a while before they stop operating independently. So, for a few years at least, we'll still have to choose, Sirius / XM / or both.
Rammitinski 01-30-08, 02:42 AM I prefer sirius. One thing I would love to see them do to extend their weeknights "Progressions" program on The Vault to a few hours, but expand that library some more, please!

I too got XM back in 2004 for the NASCAR coverage and suffered through 2007 without it. Now I'm hanging waiting for the merger. Thinking about getting Sirius now that Daytona is coming. What do ya think?

Im still waiting for Sirius to go deeper into the bands Ive heard of. Ive never heard anything other than what most bands have released(on channels like Octane, Lithium, Alt nation, Hair nation). Not to mention all the bands that are popular and dont get played(they arent no name bands either). For me, Ill take the chance that I like the "bands Ive never heard of" to hearing the same Rage against the Machine song they've been playing daily for the past yr. Different strokes though.

On XM, Deeptracks is just that. You get songs off great albums that were not the radio hits. If you tune in, that is what you should expect. If you tune into the Vault and hear a bunch of stuff you've heard before, then are they really playing "Deep Classic Rock" ?

Pat I think you know exactly where it came from. cherry picked, that depends. its what deeptracks has played and totaly contradicts your above post. according to you deeptracks does not play these types of songs. well guess what, they do.
so thats that!
Pat6366 02-11-08, 05:01 PM I really have no idea where your list came from. Have those songs been played on Deeptracks? Probably, they do a lot of different themed shows and old concerts like the King Biscuit series but their typical play list does not read like the list you produced, which I think you know.
dariustos 02-26-08, 02:12 AM according to January NPD, Sirius outsold XM 64% to 34%.

I love Sirius, they have the only LGBT channel, OutQ109. Their music channels are pathetic, however as the sound quality is so inferior to CD or even mp3s from an Ipod.

The music channels are pathetic? uh ok. I think they could drop a few of the 10 classic rock stations for a higher bitrate or maybe a better jazz station. Anything really.
The 128kb online stream sounds sweet on my home system :)

No, it's not "that". Coming up at 10pm is The Blacklight Room:
"The aroma of sandalwood an incense. The vivid protrait of artists and a groovy array of psychedelia from our vintage commercial and TV vaults. In the Blacklight Room, you will always find the finest in psychedelic rock including Traffic, The Electric Prunes, Beatles, Velvet Underground, Love and Rotary Connection and more. "
I don't see that bizzare list you just posted anywhere on the channel guide. And certainly there is no Led Zeppelin playing right now. In fact I haven't heard any yet today.
Right now, I'm listening to a Bob Marley tune called "Buffalo Soldier". It's not a song I've even HEARD until now.
Your portrayal of Deep Tracks is inaccurate. Sorry.
Rammitinski 03-21-08, 09:11 PM I don't know if they ever do play any of it, but in the times I've been in my friend's car listening to Deep Tracks, I've never once heard an obscure progressive rock song - just the usual, mainstream Roundabout, Karn Evil Pt. 2, Have a Cigar-type stuff.
I hear them all the time on The Vault on Sirius. They even have a M-F evening, 1 hr. show dedicated to it called "Progressions". That's my kind of music, so I'll just stick with them.
(And Mike - if you've never heard "Buffalo Soldier" before you really have to start getting a little more adventurous on that dial. What have you been listening to up 'till now - Top 40 stations?)

I do you one better. I actually LISTEN to the station instead of going and trying to look up two or three songs and pretend that is the station.
Like right now, where I am listening to "Lazy Me" by Moby Grape.
Nice try, but your portrayal of Deep Tracks is still dead wrong.

Actually, I've only been listening to Deep Tracks for a bit. I've been more the 80's on 8, Big Tracks, Fred, and comedy station type. Plus with my 3 year old son there's been an abundance of XM Kids in the car and house.
But now I'm hooked on it.
Rammitinski 03-22-08, 05:19 PM Just wondering, because "Buffalo Soldier", is considered a pretty popular Marley song, and all of his popular songs are FM staples. At least where I live they are (just not on those stations that play the same stuff over and over and over again).

Haven't heard it on any of the other stations except yesterday on DT. Of course I also don't listen to the Reggae station either and it may play there.
Just not a song I've heard on the mainstream XM stations I listen to. And I don't listen to FM at all. Haven't for years.
That explains it. Buffalo Soldier is one of Marley's new releases.
